One of the most touching scenes in this classic masterpiece. A perfect performance... And just notice how everyone reacts to the song. Even the cynical take-no-bull**** General is moved by the song, stopping from smoking his cigar for a while. The same with the Sergeant and Mrs. York. I can't get enough of this scene, they don't make them no more. John Ford's brilliance as a director is at it's best

When my father was still alive not only did he love to watch the movie he really loved this song and Ken Curtis's voice so much that he made me record it and he played it all the time!

A traditional song of the Irish Rebellion as is the "Foggy Dew". A fitting tribute apparently requested by Maureen O'Hara, a fine, fiery Irish lass - RIP!

Victor McLaghlan: "Sir, the trad- the traditional singers-" John Wayne "THE REGIMENTAL SINGERS!" Nice save, Duke, pretty sure no one noticed...

It's a big, BIG compliment to John Wayne's professionalism as an actor that he stayed in character instead of cracking up laughing!

Maureen O'Hara says she asked John Ford to put this song in the movie, Rio Grande. I don't know why someone calls it "an old rebel" song, but in Special Features of the Rio Grande film, she states she chose that song for the film and John Ford loved it. Since he and half the crew were Irish, no wonder.

Philip Yomtov: The reason they made this film and two other westerns was because the John Fordt wanted to make "The Quiet Man". No one thought it would make a dime, but Ford was asked if he would make three westerns. The money made from them would make up for what would be lost on "The Quiet Man". He did the three westerns - "Rio Grande", "The Horse Soldiers" and "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon". Not sure if the last one was the third. But all four were great films and made lots of money.

Look at the poignant reactions of all the officers, especially the general, and Maureen O'Hara. Directer John Ford knew what he was doing.

to jan hangland, -the reference to this being an 'old rebel song' refers to the Irish rebellion, not the war of northern agression. ...PS, the third was 'fort apache', not 'the horse soldiers', which came along later.

Michael. It truly was an old rebel song. The Irish rebellion thus the root word rebel. Not always referring to the war of aggression. They knew what they were saying..

The Confederates started the what you call the War of Northern Aggression and they did it in a filthy cause which deservedly lost. Let's have no pretence about states' rights unless it's to admit it was about the right to keep people in a state of slavery.

I love this film, but this scene always bothers me: they're singing a song half a century before it was written in 1916!

True but the Fenian Brotherhood was founded in 1858 snd 1000’d of Fenians had fought in the Civil War, and of course it was the Fenian Brotherhood that hatched the Easter Uprising.
