The earliest known version of the song, titled "The Good Old Way," was published in Slave Songs of the United States in 1867.
According to some sources, the song was published in The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion in 1835, decades before the effort to gather and publish Negro spirituals gained momentum in the Reconstruction Era.
Text:
As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good old way
And who shall wear the starry crown
Good Lord, show me the way!
O sisters/brother/mothers/fathers/children, let's go down,
Let's go down, come on down
O sisters, let's go down
Down in the river to pray
As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good old way
And who shall wear the robe and crown
Good Lord, show me the way!
