Downloading Topographic Maps using Google Earth

In this tutorial, you will see how to download high-resolution topographic maps (scanned) from the online topographic map collections repository of the University of Texas Libraries. To do this, we will also be making use of the Google Earth application, primarily to view the availability of the topographic maps across the globe, and to pick the right one that we might potentially be interested in.

If your internet browser is failing to download the KMZ file for some reason, right click on 'World - Google Earth Map Index [KMZ]' link, and select 'Save link as..', and you will be able to save the KMZ file without any issues :)

For Regional scale, this map is helpful for visualization. Unfortunately, we cannot get a scale 1:25k & 1:50k. Thats the drawbacks. 1:250000 is the largest scale one will find in this file.

I don't know whether this thread is active, but still I'll post my queries here - When I download the map (of Shillong, India) - and went to ArcGIS Pro to georeference it - there is an error that says that "The following data source in "Map" is missing coordinate system information. The data can be drawn but it may be misaligned. If you know the correct coordinate system for the data, use the define projection tool to assign it"" - Any suggestion on how to solve it?

Hi, if you are referring to the raw map which you downloaded, it will not contain any coordinate information as it is not georeferenced. Once you import the map to ArcGIS, try using some reference data against which you can perform the geo-referencing
