Downtown Aquarium (formerly Colorado's Ocean Journey) is a public aquarium and restaurant located in Denver, Colorado at the intersection of I-25 and 23rd Ave. The 107,000 square feet (9,900 m2) main building sits on a 17-acre (6.9 ha) site adjacent to the South Platte River. Its freshwater and marine aquaria total approximately 1,000,000 US gallons (3,785,000 l), and exhibit a variety of fish and other animals. It is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
Aquarium Exhibits
North America
The North American continent is home to a variety of different habitats. Learning about the interesting habitats and the wonderful creatures that call our continent home is the first step toward ensuring that these habitats will be there for generations to come.
In The Desert
Deserts receive less than 10 inches of rain per year and have a very high evaporation rate, which exceeds the annual rainfall rate. Animals living in the desert have adapted to dryness, extreme temperatures and lack of shelter from the sun.
Under The Sea
The Under the Sea exhibit simulates the coral reef found just offshore in many seas, rich in caves and crevices that create excellent habitats.
At The Wharf
A wharf habitat has tides and waves crashing in and out all the time. The animals in this exhibit have various adaptations to survive such a tough environment. Many animals are submerged under water for a length of time, only to have the tide go out again, exposing them to the sun and air. Some animals dig down under
The Rainforest
Seven percent of our world is covered by rainforests. The exhibits in this area simulate different kinds of tropical rainforests. Some exhibits represent rainforests that are periodically inundated by flooding. Other habitats in this area represent a protected mangrove swamp near the mouth of a river, where tangled, submerged roots provide ample hiding places for small fish species.
Coral Lagoon
Barrier reefs consist of ridges of coral that run parallel to coastlines. They serve as barricades, breaking down wave energy before it reaches land. This saltwater habitat simulates a protected coral lagoon, sheltered from the pounding waves by a barrier reef.
Sunken Temple
Ancient ruins and temples are some of the world's most amazing mysteries. Many different cultures have temple ruins that have survived the ages.
Shipwreck
In this area, the paintings on the walls replicate a shipwreck and the exhibits simulate the edge of the coral reef, where most shipwrecks occur.
At The Beach
Several interesting and unique animals inhabit areas of shallow water just off the shore. These animals live on rocky or sandy sea bottoms. They are good at hiding, spending most of their adult lives in crevices or burrows, or buried under the sand.
Aquatic Carousel
Ever ridden on the back of a painted pony or a mystical sea monster? Take a ride on one of your favorite animals on this merry-go-round of fun. Height Requirement: Under 42” must be accompanied by an adult.
4-D Theater
Our 40-seat theater is accompanied with headrests and cup-holder armrests, and are specially equipped with multiple effects to feel the action of the movie for a one-of-a-kind immersive movie experience! Our 15 minute films change throughout the year based on season and holiday. Polar Express, Spongebob Squarepants, Happy Family, Planet Earth - are just some of the shows.

I’ve been to this aquarium too many times in my life. We live close by so it’s always fun to visit. Their rainbow fish tank is probably my favorite. I recently have started keeping Rainbows and they have become my favorite fish

Hey Tom! Sorry for the late comment, work got in the way. Originally, i wasn`t scheduled as much as usual, so i thought: oh cool, extra time to watch Tom`s video and other content creators (currently in the middle of catching up on dozens of channels, almost all of which i`ve discovered in the last 2 years, thousands of videos wait) videos, neat! But nope, work decided to call me in for shifts on nearly all of my days off, and i generally don`t like to decline since our Store Standards Team has shrunk to 5 people including myself and one of them is leaving soon, i would not be surprised if they all leave come winter time... but that`s a worry for the future. Speaking of work Tom, how`s work been to you? Work has been good for me, apart from one of my co-workers who is arrogant towards me purely because of my age, always nit-picking at stupid things, makes me feel like i don`t know what i`m doing, which is not true, there`s a reason the Store Manager calls me the best Store Standards Associate that she has seen in 25 years, she calls me the most reliable Associate in the entire store. Great video Tom! This was a beautiful aquarium! Lots of unique species of aquatic life and some reptiles, amphibians and tigers! As usual, you did a fantastic job of showing all of the animals at this aquarium, showing all aspects of the habitat, not missing any information on the signage. It`s the little things that make a difference in the big things, you know Tom? I thought that the habitats here and the different sections were amazing, very well designed and decorated! What do you say we move on to some time-stamps eh Tom? I have so many today that it might not all fit in one comment, i may have to add a reply but we will see my friend!: 2:39: I know the spelling is misleading Tom, but it`s actually croppie and not crappie, i`ve only recently learned the correct pronunciation. 3:10: Must be fun to feed the tanks with all these different species, just the sheer number of fish. Imagine feeding the big shark tanks, oh snap... 3:43: I`m not exactly sure on the species but i wanna say it`s some kind of terrapin? I`m kind of dissapointed in myself lol, considering how much i know about reptiles... 5:34: That`s a nice touch! Fun fact: If you have a waterfall, fountain or anything that makes bubbles in your tank, that`s what creates oxygen for the fish in the tank, just something i`ve learned from fish channels in my subscription list. 6:05: This guy looks like some kind of side-neck turtle, but i`m not 100% sure on that. Sorry, i`m not being a big help in the turtle department, am i Tom haha? 6:30: Very nice habitat for the otter, though! Glad we got to see one at the end of the video! 7:05: Again, very good job with the design! Some places go all out, above and beyond and i think it`s safe to say that this aquarium falls into that category. 7:41: I agree with you on that Tom. That`s a lot of fishies. 9:31: Apart from Megalodon, this is one of my favourite prehistoric ocean creatures. Just as much as i`m interested in extant (living) life, i`m also a bit of a nerd (okay fine i`m a prehistoric geek) about prehistoric life, in other words extinct (non-living) life. Mosasaurus is also the marine reptile in the movie Jurassic World which follows the Jurassic Park Franchise and she (all life created by the scientists are female) is responsible for the demise of Indominus Rex, the T-Rex-Raptor hybrid created by Park scientists, it also had about two dozen other dinosaurs in it`s DNA and another dozen modern day animals in it`s DNA. The final battle was looking grim, the T-Rex and Raptor fighting her with all their might. At one point she was cornered at the Mosasaur lagoon, the T-Rex knocked her into the lagoon fence, breaking it. The I-Rex climbs to her feet and she, the T-Rex and the Raptor all roar in unison, just then the Mosasaur leaps out of the water, onto land. Grabbing the I-Rex by her neck, she starts dragging her back to the Lagoon, the I-Rex kicking in protest, the Mosasaur goes underwater, disappearing with the I-Rex, her tail comes and swishes water away, then comes a strange marine reptile noise as she drowns the I-Rex and eats her, the skeleton would then lie at the bottom of the lagoon. The I-Rex was so vicious that she killed her sibling when she was young... 9:50: The Mosasaur was the apex predator of it`s time, this reproduction is amazing! 10:25: It`s actually shad, Tom ;). 11:07: That is one big sturgeon! 12:11: What a cool demonstration! Thanks for putting this in the video, Tom!
@noahroy7145
@noahroy7145 2 года назад
12:25: How pretty! I don`t think it`s a very little tank, Tom ;). Just bugging ya, as you bug me from time to time, about mice for example? 12:41: That`s an interesting name for a fish. Cool that they included how it got it`s name in the signage. 14:44: Such beautiful snakes! Although not great for handling, if you want a great display reptile, one that eats like a champ, they make great pets if you can find a captive bred individual. How do i know that? From all the reptile channels in my subscription box :). 15:50: Yep! Yellow tang, Tom! See, you said you know nothing about fish at the end of this video but this little clip shows that you`ve gathered some knowledge from all of the different aquariums you`ve visited :)! 19:37: That is an impressive fish right there. Some animals are so big, it`s a wonder to look at, don`t you agree, Tom? 21:05: That is a big moray eel! I guess the eels felt like being showy that day! 22:43: Eel pile up! I cracked up that you messed up this part multiple times Tom, i love how you didn`t edit that out, just adds to the comedy side of your channel. Do you have comedy in your background Tom? Asking in full seriousness/out of curiosity. 23:24: So close Tom! It`s CATA-LUFA. Hope this helps! 25:24: Shrimpfish, actually Tom! 27:53: Some kind of bamboo shark, by the looks of it. 28:20: Talk about camouflage eh Tom? He looks like a rock! This species is a master of ambush, lying in wait for hours, days, sometimes even weeks for a meal. 29:10: What a great habitat! Those tall plants are kelp, they occur in massive numbers in the wild, known as kelp forests. 33:34: I love the shape and design on the inside of this tank, great home for the frogs! 33:45: Dude, it looks like a legit rainforest, WOW! 34:11: Another RU-vidr i watch (Paul Cuffaro, i`ve brought him up before) has a pond in his backyard and has 6 or 7 BIG pacu in there. Every time he feeds them on camera, it looks like there`s explosions in the water, he also has an arrowanna in there, i should note that the pond is sealed, no access to other bodies of water as Paul had people dig it for him. Last time he caught one of the Pacu, it weighed 40 pounds or so...Needless to say they outgrew his concrete pond and were put in the pond he had dug in the old cow enclosure. 34:50: These are some big fish! There`s a small blue fish next to one of the massive pacu, look at that size difference!! Crazy stuff. 35:35: Paul also had these a few years back, they were popular on the channel. I would know because i`ve supported him since he started RU-vid 6 years ago, fond him barely a week after he posted his first ever video. Because of his audience size (2.41 Million at the time of writing this), he rarely ever sees my comments but he does remember me from all those years ago and thanks me for my continued support of his channel. Much like you Tom! Just, i didn`t find you as early on. 35:40: The Toronto Zoo has one of this species, he`s rumoured to be over 45 years old! Really cool guy, got a picture with him in 2014 that`s in a photo album in my room. 35:46: Paul has a video where he goes fishing in a pond for these in Florida! These fish are from Australia but one guy in Florida was able to bring some to Florida and breed them and people can have the experience of fishing this species, which has the potential of getting very large! 37:14: Shame this guy was a no-show Tom, they`re an ABSOLUTE BEAST of an animal, seen them on documentaries. Look them up Tom, your jaw WILL drop, you mark my words. 38:18: What a beautiful cat. I think i read somewhere that males have thicker and longer hair, maybe that`s why the hair was longer? 42:42: Now, that`s some good hide n seek skills! Now it`s your turn to hide, Tom. 42:47: I`ve also heard these guys called: Horned Pacman Frogs. Pacman comes from how pacman eats and how these guys eat similar to good ol Pacman. 43:28: These guys have some great size on them! Always interesting to look at, eh Tom? Good news, Ripley`s Aquarium in Toronto has these guys, unless that`s changed recently... 44:58: I`m not surprised, these guys are masters of camouflage and hiding, he could be right in front of our faces and we just don`t see him. 45:06: very interesting animals. Paul has one of these guys, he`s made a nice little burrow. He`s a peacock mantis shrimp, Paul has yet to name him, he`s very much so a channel favourite. For such a small animal, they pack a big punch, imagine being punched to death by a shrimp... I mean that`s how they kill, is punching, as fast as a bullet from a 22 caliber gun. 48:57: This looks like a Loggerhead Sea Turtle to me, obviously i could be wrong though. This tank was amazing, lots of different species! 49:57: Blacktip Reef Shark, as you said a few seconds later, good job Tom! If i didn`t know any better, i would say myself and aquariums are rubbing off on you. 52:43: Look at the size of that! Magnificent animals! 58:42: Nice shirt Tom! Great photos, did you end up printing them? If so, how much was it? 58:48: Haha love it Tom, made me smile man. 1:00:02: That otter left a right old mess for his keepers XD. 1:00:43: Fancy restaurant and a nice view of the fish! Did you get something to eat here, Tom? Alright, that`s it for time stamps! Great video as usual Tom, i`m off to watch your Denver Zoo video now. I hope you`re well, tell Sheldon i said hi and i`ll see you in your Denver Zoo video. Take care man, be safe. As a fan, i not only care about your content but also your-well-being.

@ Noah Roy Sorry for my late reply, your comments are generally too long to be able to see and respond to on my phone. I really enjoyed the Downtown Aquarium Denver. Like the location in Texas, this place was beautify designed. Thanks for mentioning the correct way to pronounce Crappie. I always thought it was a. $#!++y name for a fish 😀 They had a great variety if turtles I definitely enjoy the otters, just watching them swim around is fun. The Mosasaur was huge, so glad something that large isn't swimming around out there. I was quite impressed with all the tanks they had. Made the viewing experience so much better. Although some tanks it was harder to find all the critters. Did you say something about 🐁? Geeze your obsessed with them Noah. Yeah I messed up the eel pileup, it was like a tongue twister 😦 This place has an amazing variety of fish, sone I rarely see in other aquarium. Pacu are giant fish, they look like they could eat the other whole. I am looking forward to the Toronto Zoo, gonna try my best to get there next year. That giant tank had hundreds of sea animals. The sharks are impressive, I've learned a lot about them going to all the different aquariums. It's really strange to see Tigers in an aquarium, but this place really makes it work. I didn't purchase any pictures that time, they we're a but overpriced. I didn't want to spend the 💸 It was great to see the octopus swim around. Usually when I see them, they are curled up sleeping. I didn't eat at the restaurant, I'm sure it's a great experience. It would strange if you ordered the fish, I just know the fish in the water would be judging me. 😳 I'm glad you enjoyed the tour Noah. I enjoyed filming it for everyone.

@@TomsRoadTrippin No worries Tom, you`re on a road trip which means it`ll take longer for replies, especially for me given the size of my comments, try not to rush too much to reply to me, i`m a patient man, no pressure. No comment on the Crappie and mouse thing Tom, man that`s the last time i bring up a road trip to go clean up the camper... The mosasaur was huge, the apex predator of it`s time, it even ate smaller mosasaurs! Only about 5% of the ocean is explored, so you never know, maybe species like this never died out, perhaps there are all kinds of creatures never before seen my man out there it is a possibility, we just need to find the key and unlock the manuscript and free whatever is locked inside... Yeah Pacu are huge man, but they are vegetarians, rarely if ever eating any meat. I really hope you get to the Toronto Zoo and Ripley`s Aquarium here in Canada in Toronto. I warn you though, Toronto is a huge city, haven`t been since my last trip there with my grandparents in 2014 though, that was the last time i went to the Toronto Zoo. Oh, btw: they have white lions, three of them. Whoops, i let it out... The big tank was pretty impressive! It seems almost every aquarium has a big bang tank, one that has dozens of species in it, one that`s truly a sight to behold if you catch my drift Tom! Tigers are definitely not what comes to mind when i think aquarium but this place takes good care of them by the looks of it! Nice habitat for them too! Btw, you misspelled my name at the end of your reply lol Tom. Always enjoy the tours and writing these novel like comments for ya Tom.
