This video shows my October 15th, 2017 bike ride around the roads of Downtown Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The video begins at Fort Calgary (9th Ave SE & 7th St SE E) and ends the Peace Bridge (1st Ave SW & 7th St SW).
In this video I am riding a Shwinn Network 2.0 hybrid style bike which I rented from HI Calgary. I filmed this using a Contour Roam 2 camera mounted to the head tube of the bike. I recorded the audio with a Panasonic voice recorder and earpiece microphone. My speed and heart rate were tracked using a Garmin handheld GPS, and I used VIRB Edit to overlay the gauges.
I hope you enjoy this video. Please leave a comment and SUBSCRIBE!
Thanks for watching!

I bought a new e-bike last spring and it is great for all the hills in Calgary. I rode the area 2 weeks ago and along the Bow river pathway.

I don't get why everybody is so obsessed with Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver! Calgary is a beautiful city and I can't wait to call it or Edmonton home one day
@GsunnyGGamer
@GsunnyGGamer 6 лет назад
Toronto and Vancouver are actually downgrades for Calgarians down here, low wages, poorer people, expensive housing, higher taxes. 2 more decades before Calgary overtakes atleast Vancouver as the 2nd most prominent city in Canada. I dont include montreal cause its mostly french. Only problem calgary has is low density so the city looks dead at times especially in the winter.

I've been to Toronto and New York, but I loved Toronto, I had nice time there. Calgary and Vancouver are on my next list.

Thanks for the ride and the tour in Calgary, CJ!!!! I enjoyed it! I am glad that you rode normal bike without problem in your wrists :) The sound was very nice, no problem with the wind at that point, didn't bother me at all! I was imprest about that sign-counter for the bike riders!!!! Wow, they are way ages in front of my country in that matter!! And the bike lanes, and the bike traffic lights, it's another planet there, haha!!!! Thank you for sharing all the infos and the little things about your country and what you see when you are biking! I am looking forward for the next one, on Peace Bridge! I liked that you stopped there your video! Take care CJ and have safe rides, love and greetings from Greece :)

Great video man! In my own opinion, I believe Calgary is so much better than Edmonton. Downtown Edmonton is so small are dirty, and construction every summer.

haha wow, I didn't notice that. I wonder if it was the overhead electrified rail lines that played havoc with my GPS.

Thank you for that tour of Downtown Calgary. I’ve never been to Calgary but it looks really nice. I have been to Toronto, years ago, in fact my mother came from Toronto sailing to Ireland as a child in the 1930s. So even though I have a connection with Toronto I still found Calgary to be most interesting.

haha, yes it was pretty quiet when I was filming this video, but keep in mind this was a Sunday morning. I don't think Toronto is that much different at that time.

Calgary is also a less denser city overall, its not more dead, it just feels that way. It suffers from urban sprawl and is actually bigger than Toronto in area with only 1.3 mil people. It may take another decade before they fix this problem.

Hey cjhoyle, is it possible you can make a video of solely going down 8th Avenue, 9th Avenue, Centre Street and some areas around that? We're a group of dutch students working on a project for calgary, yet did not have the opportunity to go there yet.

Sara Jane if u want to know how the weather is in calgary you need to go outside and look up. in October it could be +25c or it could be or -25c and sometimes booth in one day if you do go to calgary make time to go to Banff, canmore and bragcreek (small towns near calgary)

For some perspective: we received something like 20cm of snow October 2 last year, and so far this season, we've received maybe 30cm of snow between September and mid-October, but tomorrow is going to be in the 50ºs (F), and I have seen my breath every month this year. So, weather in Calgary is extremely variable, but I have always enjoyed my visits to Calgary and ultimately decided to move here from Virginia....over two years in Calgary now!

Hi how are the Calgary roads for bicycling? I mean terrain, is it plain or hilly terrain?. Is normal commuter bicycle with 7spd gears enough or does it required ebike like radcity?
@cjhoyle
@cjhoyle 4 года назад
As mentioned in the video, I don't live in Calgary and the day that I filmed these 2 videos was the only time I've ever cycled there. It's a moderately hilly city. I believe the bike that I rented had only 7 speeds and it worked fine for me. I think a 21 speed bike is a much better choice personally. Whether you need an electric assist bike or not is really a question of your physical condition and how far you want to ride.

How did you find your wrists after not being on the normal bike you use in Toronto?
@cjhoyle
@cjhoyle 6 лет назад
Thanks for asking. I wore splints on my wrists for this ride and didn't encounter any unusual feelings thankfully. I had some earlier success with using splints when riding a conventional bike but eventually they lost their effectiveness and the pain returned. So I had a feeling they would work ok for this short day of riding, but I'd be concerned to return to riding a conventional bike every day again.

Awesome video! Let me ask you something: I'm planning on moving from Calgary to Toronto. From a cyclist point of view, how do you compare the experience of riding a bike in both cities? I've been visiting Toronto once but unfortunately I didn't have a chance to ride a bike while there.
@cjhoyle
@cjhoyle 6 лет назад
Thanks. My experience with biking in Calgary is very limited, and I only really got to ride in the downtown core. But if you simply compare one downtown to the other, my opinion is that Calgary has better bike infrastructure. One of the unique things about Toronto however is that despite the lack of protected bike lanes, the volumes of people riding bikes are enormous. I always find it really neat riding somewhere and being surrounded by 10 or so other people riding the same route as me.

The saddle dome is the home of the Calgary flames hockey team not the stampede

It's both...just like I mentioned in the video.
@freedombubba6201
@freedombubba6201 5 лет назад
cjhoyle Sorry I worded that funny. I was just trying to emphasis that it's the flames home and that the stampede is more about the fairway and race track. The stampede grounds are way more than the saddle dome, that's all.
@cjhoyle
@cjhoyle 5 лет назад
@@freedombubba6201 Agreed, it's just one of many venues that are part of the stampede. In my second biking video in Calgary I rode over and finished the video just outside of the Saddle Dome.
