Now this is the GR downtown that I remember as a child growing up, and then as a teenager :) Thanks !

Back then if you had any shopping to do you had to go downtown. My great-grandparents who were farmers and lived in Allegan County would only venture downtown Grand Rapids once or twice a year to shop for dry goods.

I showed this to my Mom who was born in Grand Rapids then without telling her what it was and she knew Herpolsheimers as soon as she saw it. :)

E Fulton and E Park Pl. looking west. The white brick 2 story building beyond the gas station is what is now the Grand Rapids Children's Museum.

Wow a vibrant downtown that actually had its own community

It was a great downtown. The downside----it was very busy----and it was hard to find parking close to the store you were going to. But we mostly took buses----since most families had only one car----and the dad usually took that to work. Malls in the '60's and '70's killed off downtowns in all but 3 of the US biggest Cities. Those that pertty much survived were NYC, Chicago, and SF. And now---SF is having big problems of their own making. But I"d guess that about half our biggest Cities----like Detroit, GR, and Pittsburgh, have come back in some ways.

Wow. Downtown GR really hasn't changed much in the past 65 years. We have a few new towers, and a few of the buildings in this video have been replaced by more modern buildings. But, for the most part, it's the same.

Remember riding the bus downtown with my Mom to shop at Herposhiimers and ride the monorail in the basement
@SittingWithDogs

GR had a monorail?
@sailawaybob
@sailawaybob Год назад
@@SittingWithDogs LOl the monorail hung from the ceiling of Herposheimers department store , it rode kids around as parents shopped below.
@furnitureconsortium
@furnitureconsortium Год назад
@@sailawaybob to add to this, they kept that monorail there when the building housed a shopping mall (City Centre) in the 1980's and early 1990's. By that time, I was a teenager and much too large to ride the train 😞 I know at some point, it became the City Police Department...sometime in the 2000's. I was born and raised in GR, but I moved south many years ago

@@furnitureconsortium cool we moved from GR area in 1967 so much has changed there.

I heard a lot of it is gone with urban renewal (starting in 1956.) I think that some deteriorated buildings must be taken down-but maybe not whole neighborhoods.

Would love to experience this timelime. It's a shame though that I'd probably get arrested, beaten or both just by existing because of my race.

Everything is SO much cleaner and nicer. People took pride in how they acted, looked, and there was true craftsmanship in things! Now it’s all just pure SHIT!
