Owensboro Mayor Ron Payne gives us a tour of Smothers Park, the centerpiece of Owensboro's riverfront development.
The park fountains were designed by the company that created the famous fountains at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas. Three signature fountains are timed to put on a show every 15 minutes. Water cascades down steps to the Ohio River.
The park is truly family friendly for everyone. The Lazy Dayz Playground is one of the largest playgrounds in the country and it's completely accessible to those with handicaps. It features a wheelchair path and swings for special-needs children. Whimsical, larger than life creatures like a cardinal, a fish and a squirrel-all made of fiberglass-decorate the playground.
The park also remembers history and sacrifice. The Shelton Memorial, which honors America's POWs and MIAs, is named for Colonel Charles E. Shelton, an Owensboro native who was shot down over Laos in 1965 during the Vietnam War.
Veterans Boulevard was redeveloped as part of the riverfront project. A promenade along the river completes the picture. Tim Ross, director of public events for Owensboro, says the city uses the park for events like the Friday night concert series Bluegrass on the Banks.
