A few things here. If this hand is played any other way that is more standard (TT opens and AK 3 bets or flats or TT limps and AK isos) Doyle goes broke for sure. Secondly I don’t really know what Doyle is targeting with this bet sizing at the end the way this hand played out. There are just so few draws and I really doubt that he takes a hand like 45s and bluffs like this across the turn into 2 others and on the river for full pot.

Go play micro-stakes with this playstyle, you will win more than if you play very aggressively early on and push players out of the pots where you have the best hand. Most of your bets will be made when you have 70% equity or more in the pot. 90% of your riverbets will be BIG bets with 100% equity and pure profit every time they call. Disagree. Flatting AK preflop is not standard but calling a small% of the time is fine. Flop and turn is fine, river bet is bigger than I would like but it’s not bad. Folding river is hard because you have an underrepped but when someone raises a pot sized river bet AK is just a bluff catcher and unless they are a crusher or maniac this is an underbluffed spot. A bit tight by the goat but i trust his live reads.

@@mitchellcongrove3413 well back to the original comment, I don't really agree in that Doyle's turn and river play seem fine. The river fold is exploitable, a solver probably calls, but you don't beat value, and its an underbluffed spot, so as an exploit agains the field, its an impressive, disciplined fold. As far as preflop, obviously its supposed to be a riase. I just don't feel the need to go onto RU-vid comments to point out that you're supposed to raise AK preflop. In Doyle's defense maybe he has some read or reason to think Nguyen's limp is very strong. If you literally knew he had 10-10, calling would be completely fine. So it seems like a 100% raise to me, but given that the limp in fact was very strong, I'm not really looking to criticize him for doing something that may have been based on a read in game, when that read actually was right.

@brianmorin7022
@brianmorin7022 2 года назад
It's worth watching the video. There were enough timing and physical tells to help Doyle find this fold on the river. Pre-flop we don't know what reads/tells/etc. were present because of the video editing. If Doyle reads him for a tight early position limp, given the need to preserve chips, I can see the over-limp with AK. It particularly fits in with the pre-GTO way people thought of the game. Against a tight EP limp we don't think over-folds to a c-bet, over-limping AQ, AJs, ATs, TT, etc. would be correct, right? So how big of a mistake is the AK over-limp? edit: Thinking about this over lunch. Doyle is sitting at a table with mostly rec players with misbalanced ranges and information leakage both via timing and body language. His decisions in this hand need to be considered with that in mind. I still agree that the pre-flop and the river bet sizes are mistakes, but in that context they're much smaller mistakes and I'd love to hear Doyle give his perspective on why that river bet gets paid by worse hands in that spot.

Not trying to act smug or act like its not a good fold- but I do think its more than 10% fold it . Your hand is a bluffcatcher and you are the most famous poker player of all time and have just overbet 12 into 10,000 and you get reraised. People aren't raising worse for value , and very few people reraise such polar sizings as a bluff. Especially when you're Doyle Brunson. So the question becomes 'is this player bluffing enough here to make it worthwhile to bluffcatch at 3/1?' ..remember you beat no value because Brunsons sizing was too polar to reraise with weaker aX .. Not saying I'd fold it or that it's easy to, especially when so underrepped but at the same time, I think more than 10% figure it out.

It's a good fold, but he's not playing against an aggressive pro like Landon Tice. It seems like a lot of amateurs play super tight in the Main Event so experienced pros can make folds like this.

Doyle played the hand as if the opponent had a weak Ace. His value bet on the river was for a worse Ace. People are critiquing his play, but he wants weaker hands to call. He could of raised on the flop, but early in tournaments you want pot control and don't want to cooler yourself. Could of definitely been played differently though. Could of won a small pot or lost a whole lot more.

Bad fold? Easiest fold. Would like that every spot I play would be as easy as this one. Nguyen has 0 bluffs in this spot. Maybe 1 combo when he s drunk

It isn’t that the fold was incredible, Brunson knew he played the hand poorly. One, he didn’t 3 bet and two, he didn’t raise after the flop. Having done both then the hand would be over. He played the hand the opposite of what he wrote in his book.

Doyle has always been one of my least favorite famous poker players. This hand is yet another example of a hand where I just don't think he's playing it properly. Limping AK and then his bet size on the river are two examples of very poor decisions in this hand. I don't think it's that incredible of a fold by him here. It's hard for Nguyen to have a bluff and it's obvious that he's not doing this with a worse hand than what Doyle has. I don't understand why people think of Doyle as such a good player. I think he's the most overrated player in poker - so many people treat him like he's some type of god at poker.
@Steve-eb8jc
@Steve-eb8jc 2 года назад
It's because he WAS a god at poker. If you had to play him 40, 50 years ago before you had youtube, solvers, books, training sites, etc telling you 95% of poker strategy that someone else solved for you, he'd clean out your whole bankroll.

I am starting to see more (counterintuitive) slow-play...some are calling it "Old School". It seems to be the natural reaction to the super-Aggro playstyle that came into popularity. Doyle subscribes to the maxim "Don't try to TAKE their money; Let them GIVE it to you."

Enough about this AK fold being the best of all time people. Its a relatively easy fold for anybody who is a winning cardplayer. Doyle is value betting against all pocket pairs and lower aces. All of those hands he's hoping to get called by are never raising. Like if the guy had AJ or something hes never going to raise hes only gonna flat call. So once doyle bets turn and river when no draws are there and he gets raised, he's up against a slowplayed set which turned into a boat or A10 which makes complete sense. Not the hardest fold in the world guys and gals.
