Starting with the Incendies was Oscar nomination in 2011, Denis Villeneuve's run has been remarkable. Prisoners, Enemy, Sicario, and now, Arrival. Just having wrapped the sequel to Blade Runner a few days before this interview, he is ready for a rest... but is heading into editing full-time as this posts. He took a moment to discuss it all with David Poland.
Earlier Denis DP/30s: Prisoners - • DP/30 @ TIFF '13: Pris...
Sicario - • DP/30: Sicario, Denis ...
Shot in Los Angeles, December 2016

It depends on your taste. That's why it's art. Many good directors in this decade. Alexander Payne and many many others. And many good European directors and others: Abdellatif Kechiche, Kelly Reichardt. The list is big. For your tastes in this moment in time he dominates. I don't have a favourite director myself.

Another great interview DP/30! I've learned a lot from watching your interviews and this one is no exception. I LOVE Arrival so much that I read Ted Chiang's short story over the weekend to try to decode how much change he and the scriptwriter made. And I love those changes. I think his work reflects his compulsive sense of humanity. The feminine choice of protagonist is a natural and a moral refection on the nurturing reality of how humanity has evolved. Almost all of us were raised by women and he respects this reality with this artistic reminder. Take a vacation Denis and push-back the treadmill of production and deal only with inspiration.

@rbaker368

Aidalai. Exactly! There seems to be an obsession about a lack of women in Hollywood. But from what I can see, true artists want to tell interesting stories, regardless of whether they're about men or women. Also, there are plenty of movies and tv shows with J women leads, too numerous to mention here, so I always feel when I hear these questions/comments that it clashes with my experience of reality and I get confused!

Dedric I hear ya. It won't be like the total recall reboot. A half assed action movie riding on the name alone. If you haven't seen his other movies go check out sicario, prisoners , polytechnique, enemy. He is a master. And just listen to him answer questions. He takes the time to give in depth/thoughtful responses. Blade runner 2049 may not be the masterpiece we think or meet the expectations that have been set but it will be a great movie. He has yet to miss with the movies I've seen.
