As a film student I have to thank you for all these interviews that you do. You make these people feel comfortable and get real, in-depth answers out of them, much different than the usual cliche, pre-thought-out answers we usually get. You deserve way more views
This was a great film. The place beyond the pines was brilliant as well, never seen anything like. This guys a genius. And gosling is the best actor in hollywood
He's amazing. Great interview, although the interviewer threw me off a bit when he made that commentabout Dean's violence seemingly coming out of nowhere towards the end. This film is so real and quiet that if you don't pay attention, you miss a lot of the beauty of how it's been crafted. Dean shows his capacity for anger and violence very early on, in the school concert scene where after Cindy says, "I found Megan," he says, "How many times have I told you to lock the fucking gate." And then how he reacts on the carride to the motel. The whole film is so incredibly well-done. And this may be one of my favorite interviews ever! I'm starting The Place Beyond the Pines now.
even beyond that you see him punching things in frustration at times. Like the fence when cindy says shes pregnant and he walks off and then hits the fence
Of all the directors I know I respect this guy the most and I'm dying to see the place beyond the pines so That I may be able to Call him one of my favorit directors. This guy is so real, he makes movies that means a great Real for him and he does so organic, Real and honest.
he talks about place beyond the pines hopefully getting made gives me chills i remember seeing that at a small theater bc of limited release when i was 13
fantastic and nothing/never less ... i dream to write music for his movie(s) ... anyway, love and respect to one of the best directors of 21 cent ... thanks for posting ... yup
I just watched Blue Valentine and i think it's so universal and real that it can be a a kind of tool for relationships like it was intended to be. There is this one doggy-style that Bobby does and has an accident and the oral sex that Dean gives to Cindy but in no way is it something that should get a PG-17, not at all!
You know when people make fun of boyhood or the before series because they are "overrated" and the only good thing about them is how actors age that's just disregarding the whole effort and commitment to even be able to make it. Like here, derek wanted to wait 6 years but they didnt give it to him.
Like Derek Cianfrance? You might be interested in our “condensed” version of his brilliant film “Blue Valentine” as well as a reworked “The Place beyond the Pines” trailer. What a wonderful director/writer…
I just wanna know. I like this person. He made a good film. But I have some questions: Should directors reveal all the work they did behind the camera like Derek did? Should a director explain his film? Does Paul Thomas Anderson explain his films? Or David Lynch? And why does he talk like he never saw any good films expect for two or three when hundreds of good films came before his? How his expresses the idea that films idealises everything, always ends with happy endings etc. is wrong if you watch good films. And only someone who watches good films will watch Blue Valentine so what is his motivation to compare his film which belongs in the domain of films like There Will Be Blood to films which fall in the domain of Spiderman type films?
+Bakhtiyar Ibn Ashraful Well, 2 great films. But to answer your questions: Derek loves MANY films. He's a cinephile like any other person working hard in that business or any big fan. I mean, the guy grew up watching Creepshow and Airplane 2 over & over so he's not snobby to "spider-man type films" as you put it. Unless im misreading your question. And yes, PTA and other directors explain some of their films like this when they sit down with this type of interview. The interviews that are longer and more detailed anyhow.
what's wrong with a director explaining his movies??? I absolutely love getting inside the head of any talented and creative person, and I find it so damn rewarding to see them describe their artistic vision and their creative process. I personally loath artiest who leave everything to the audience interpretation. If we can't discover anything personally unique about the artist in their art then why the hell should we bother with engaging with it? art is all out about expressing yourself and making a connection with your audience. there is nothing more egotistical than an artist who only cares about expressing himself without giving a damn about connecting with his audience
a movie to a director is just like his child... i havent seen no director taht havent talk about their movies, they all talk aout theyr movies for hours if they want, theyr proud of what they put ou, go watch scorsese, tarantino, coppola, bunch of huge directors they all talk about theyr movie with such thirst in theyr tongue while they speak about it with alot of pride, ur comment is just non sense!
As an actor it's my dream to work with such an intelligent, gutsy director who knows exactly what he wants and the reasons why. If Derek is willing to jump in and risk falling flat on his face then the actors will
