Dr. Arndt Engelhardt’s presentation delves into the lives of Serena Rosen (née Moscheles, 1830-1902) and her husband, Georg Rosen (1820-1891), from 1852 to 1867 acting as the second Prussian Consul in Jerusalem. Serena Rosen’s artistic pursuits vividly document their residency, yet she has faded into obscurity. Through an exploration of visual and musical artifacts preserved in family archives in Germany, along with original materials from Israeli libraries and archives, Dr. Engelhardt reconstructs the life of this female artist in the Middle East. Central to her inquiry is Serena Rosen’s Oriental album, which unveils her journey to the Holy Land as a painter, musician and writer. Ultimately, this presentation sheds light on the everyday existence of a cosmopolitan German family in mid-19th-century Jerusalem.
