Omalu is a physician who has conducted groundbreaking research in the field of concussion in athletes. The 2011 NFL lockout was in part due to Omalu’s findings, as players made their own safety a key issue. He was played by Will Smith in the 2015 film Concussion. He also conducted a private autopsy of Stephon Clark, an unarmed African-American fatally shot by the police, which differed significantly from the official police autopsy.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

I’m forever thankful for Dr. Omalu. He preformed the autopsy on my niece who was killed in 2017. His findings revealed so much and helped us bring justice. Once again, Thank you! 🙏🏻

I found this talk rewarding & confirming, thank you Bennet. “There is one truth”, in general Bennet I found you to be adopting a position that has the same direction of travel as my own stance. To signal my slight divergence, my opinion adopts the view that faith extends further than its anthropocentric usage & also that energy flow in humans often referred to as ‘Spirit’ can trace its roots right back into the pre-life (inert) & pre-matter universe. Note :- I believe I have faith, I feel I have spirit. I am of the opinion all deities should be confined to history. Humanity is in its adolescent phase, moving from the childish pursuit & discovery of ourselves maturation period. Now substantially enrolled (but not completely) into our adult phase guided not from within, but from our understanding of the discovered truths.

Dr. Omalu did his job and went beyond the call of duty. If Dr. Omalu just did the usual autopsy and did the physical examination of Mike Webster's brain instead of putting samples on the slide to determine CTE then the CTE scandal of the NFL maybe would not see the light of day. Thankfully, Dr. Omalu went with his intuition and the rest is history. The sad fact is if you play a contact sport like football, hockey, MMA, or whatever, you got a higher risk of developing a long term brain injury. The fact is that it's the risk of the playing those sports.

Dr Omalu is quite right about children not needing to head a ball, both from a medical and sporting perspective. For children under the age of fifteen, it is far more beneficial for them to play short five- or six-a-side games in which the ball is not allowed to rise above shoulder height. In doing so it produces players that have a far greater competency and confidence with ball control leading to better team play. I believe that for children learning to play American-style NFL football there is a non-contact form of the game called Flag Football.
@antekm2639
@antekm2639 3 месяца назад
Yes, flag football exists. But in the States, tackle football is so common for small kids, even 5 or 6 (insane, I know), it's hard to see a way to make that safer.

Thank you Dr Omalu! This is a beautiful message, I just watched the concussion I had never heard of any of this and I'm so glad that God showed you this CTE because as you said common sense it wasn't on your side but it was in the people's side how better to show USA than through the NFL because if you looked at battered women or prostitutes with mean pimps who cares about them football players are different I, being a battered woman, would like to donate my brain to see if I might have CTE I know for sure of 3 bad concussions the latest was 5 yrs ago my right ear has had a hum ever since my right eye is bad and I don't recognize myself anymore the depression sometimes gets unbearable but suicide is not an option because God says thou shalt not kill one of the big 10. Anyway thank you again for being strong enough to tackle football!

You don’t need a cure, you only need prevention, avoiding contact in certain sports, whether it is contact with the ball or another player. There’s a lot of measures that could be implemented that would reduce it. Change how certain sports are played, in soccer protect the keeper more by giving a foul every time he is touched as a lot of times players just barge into them, stop heading the ball, as a lot of collisions happen when players try to head the ball and crash into one another. I don’t know a lot about US football but maybe they should change the way kids train? Make it easier on the body with some rule changes, however I really don’t know enough about it… I practiced Karate for seven years from age 11 until age 18, however the Shotokan Karate rules are no contact in kumite, of course you do occasionally get hit in training in the Dojo but in competitions you get disqualified if you hit an opponent, I also practiced Judo for 3 years earlier in my life and I hit the tatami a lot of times, sometimes I used to feel dizzy and confused for hours after practice. Once I was slammed quite heavily and had headaches, mood swings, trouble concentrating and irritability for days. I now practice Kendo and although we wear protection on the head, the helmet called Men (I typed it as we pronounce it in Italian), which offers a lot of shielding on the frontal area as long as you keep your head high and look your opponent in the eyes, if lower your head you can get hit beyond the wooden front, which is not as well protected as the rest of the head and that hurts. One girl at my Dojo collapsed after being hit by the strongest fella in the Dojo with his shinai. The hit was so strong it actually damaged the guy’s shinai. Okay it was a 25 euro practice shinai from Decathlon but still it takes a strong hit to break a part of one even a cheap one.

The resistance to accept the dangers of high impact sports is beyond dangerous. Rugby, hockey, wrestling, kickboxing, America football, mixed martial arts all need to be made safer by modifying the rules as well as protecting better the players. I now study neuroscience, but I have loved sports all my life. The sports industry should protect their 'assets', instead of treating gifted human beings as expandable commodities.
