that's why so many singles now in Singapore! too expensive, so stay single and take care of yourself!! foreigners are taking up jobs in Singapore while Singaporeans are struggling !!!
@westwoodly
@westwoodly 2 месяца назад
Many Singaporeans are singles because the men prefer to marry women from neighbouring countries. They are cheaper to maintain and additionally they are good taking care of their Singapore husband. Singaporean women can then choose to marry foreigners who come here to work and would be happy to get a PR or become citizen of the country.
@LonganLee
@LonganLee 2 месяца назад
@@westwoodlythe other side of the coin not mentioned is many women in sg have too much considerations due to the 5Cs because of the sg policies making them want this and that like they want their man to buy car which is world most insanely expensive and thus least valuable for money. They want condos whose prices jacked up by foreigners, some are money launderers. They want eat atas foods prices skyrocket due to rentals. So they are into marriage with a crooked mind or incorrect thinking. So they either cannot find a partner they are satisfied with or they land in divorces due to unsatisfied needs of the 5Cs

@@antonette2113 no wonder more divorce cases than in LKY Era for lack of a better word. People are pressed or feel urgent or compelled to queue for the overpriced Public Housing. The marriage is not based on true love. But true love for flat and resale windfall. Opportunistic and Profiteer mentality. Furthermore, people have slowly realized the only true love is self love and the perceived love is temporal

@@westwoodly Singapore has many women who because of financial stability or ability has naturally evolved from a traditional female becoming a man in terms of abilities and independence. If you believe that the influx of foreigners is merely to fill labor gaps, you are mistaken. The deeper strategy is to dilute the local population, reducing the influence of anti-PAP voters. At the same time, the government systematically increases its loyal base by extending kindness, support, and privileges intended for native-born citizens to these new arrivals. This tactic subtly shifts the demographic balance in favor of those who will uphold the current power structure. That’s what happening in Europe now. They have an inorganic immigration crisis that destroy their culture and economy.

The GST should not have been raised. But in raising it, there is no checks on suppliers’ profiteering from this hike. As far as productivity is concerned, most local SME bosses do NOT practice care and respect for their staff. I have heard of many cases where workers are treated poorly with little benefits but the bosses are driving big cars. These bosses then turn around to complain about high costs to the Government who in turn give them grants. And these grants are partly funded by the workers in terms of income tax and consumption taxes. Even old people who buy bread pays the GST for these types of grants. The government, through GLCs are also the largest landlords who charge sky high rentals, sometimes indiscriminately. Who cares about productivity with such rent-seeking mindsets and culture, direct from the top?

HDB prices have reached insane levels and yet HDB declares that it is making a loss for every new unit. Worse, the floor areas are getting smaller and smaller. Is there any wonder mental illness cases are on the rise in Singapore?? I suggest that before LW makes anymore statements, let him be subject to the following for 12 months first, in order to let him see and feel first hand what life really is. 1) Cut his salary to just $2000 a month 2) Disallow him to get any loans from any party 3) Take away his car, get him to travel by bus and MRT 4) Make him stay in a 3-room HDB flat, and pay $300 in monthly mortgage. 5) Make him pay for his own household bills 6) Freeze all other incomes, including those of his wife 7) Assign 1 poor aged parent, and 1 young child to support. Then see, how he feels. After this 1 year hands-on intensive life experience, he will probably become a better PM.

Why cut to 2,000 dollars? The average salary in SG is 5,783, and the median is 5,197. We are doing better than you think. Additionally, the point on HDB making a loss, that's literally what HDBs are---government-subsidised housing. HDB prices are rising NOT because HDB increases prices to make profit... It's much more complicated than what you think.

HDB prices are at insane prices because of the greedy sellers, please be clear about this! All prices of HDB start off about the same at affordable 6 fig prices. Years later, those owner who feel their flats are located in prime locations or overlooking nice views etc will want to sell them at a premium. For younger people who wanna just blame others for their housing problems, start with your own parents. If the generation before you do not ask for million dollar prices for their HDBs, you too won't be paying million dollars for such resale flats. It's a free market, if you want to assign blame, blame the fellow greedy Singaporean instead! Be objective, not every issue is the fault of the govt!

Apologists and IB will try to confused people by asking them to compare with Malaysia or Ethiopia. But this is a trick and unfair and unjust comparison. To CORNER them, make the debate clear upfront that the only fair and accurate way to measure Singapore leader performance is to compare how SG was with how SG is now since 5 years ago. So the strategy is to confront them to not weasel their way out of failures and fiasco by comparing with lousy countries where leaders lowly paid. Tell them to compare SG with SG as the only fair apple-to-apple comparison. This will corner them as they have no where to weasel out. Five years ago: 1. Costs were low 2. Life was not as stressful. 3. No adultery by leaders 4. No $3B record filth money laundering in sg. 5. No awareness of the perceived short jail term for the $3B. 6. No SimplyGo fiasco. 7. The PM’s attitude to the escalating HDB price issue is to accept and allow HDB prices to continue to rise, i.e. do not regulate and just let the market take its course. Instead, the PAP’s solution is to continually increase the subsidy and grant to cosmetically make HDB prices appear affordable. This is not addressing the root of the problem but to throw more (gimmicky) grants and subsidies at buyers. Singaporeans will eventually regret when they sell their flats down the road because the government will crawl back the grants and subsidies given to you at the point of purchase. Surely, this is NOT confronting and addressing the root causes of escalating HDB prices, which are supply side issues; the decision by HDB to stop providing a “valuation price” that formed the basis on which buyers and sellers ultimately agree on a cash over/under valuation transacted price; and stem the influx of foreigners which drive rental prices (including HDB rental prices) up. I do NOT think LKY ever conceived the HDB flat as a mean to obtaining passive rental income.

Easy answer, tens of thousands of businesses and residents will move to JB come 2027 when the MRT line is extended to JB. No more congested causeway. Get a bicycle, park at Bukit Chagar station vicinity and commute to Singapore. I see a tsunami coming....most SMEs will migrate as rentals, wages, overheads are much cheaper in JB. Once we can commute without the hassle of the causeway, the equation will change drastically. Singaporeans unfortunately will lose out even more...no need to bring in Malaysians...hire them in JB at wages much lower than in Singapore (as rentals for housing is also much cheaper, food and transportation, etc. are all cheaper). Yes, cost will drop but so will jobs...far fewer jobs. For Singaoreans...start your own business in JB. If you are waiting to be hired in 2027...good luck.

I have 2 suggestions to tackle the cost of living. 1) Lower the rents of hawker stalls and HDB shops. It's within the government's control. (But is it willing to do so?) As for coffee shop stalls and shopping mall shops, it can "encourage" the owners to lower the rents. How? Well, it's through their well-used Carrot and Stick method. Carrot - give tax incentives, subsidies etc. Stick - I don't know, cos I haven't thought about it. 2) Reduce the ministers' salaries. By 40%, at least. The PM will still get $120 000 a month. He will still be very, very rich. That also goes for the ministers, ministers of state, etc etc. These 2 methods are within their grasp. No need to blame the Ukraine war, the China - US tension, and so on.

LW had said earning a high salary contributes to a higher cost of living. Ok. How much amount do LW think is high? Next, for example, if he says $5000 is considered high, now let check how many Singaporean are earning a $5K salary and how many foreigners are earning a $5K salary. And also, what is the population of foreigners in Singapore? They are approximately 1.4 million or more foreigners working in Singapore since 2022. Do they contribute to the high cost of living. And who influx them into Singapore?

First of all this is a domestic difficulty of having your local labour force. The young and school leavers with diploma, degree would want to secure a job in the field of their studies...Question...are they willing to go into contructions, municipality, service industry...??? Your aspiration to be a high income fully develope nation with cost will get no one thinking about having lower end jobs.

In some ways foreigners also keeps costs lower. Labour for example. Foreigners would accept a lower pay to carry out labour work and if they weren’t doing it, Singaporeans would have more jobs, yes? That’s true but that Singaporean would want a much higher pay and therefore increasing operation costs. All costs would eventually make its way down to consumers and inflation would rise. On your next trip out, take a look around and imagine if all labour workers were Singaporeans and try to work out the % of operational costs increase.

Do not think productivity increase will solve employing less foreigners. In fact Productivity can only be achieved via automation or Workers being pushed harder and harder . Automation not only reduce the dependent of foreign workers but also mean retrechmentof local workers and even engineers. Pushing workers harder and harder will stress them more and more and we all know the consequences of both scenarios . So , we need to manage it and come to a balanced solution which is easier said than done. The moment they have preference to hire foreigners (Cheap but good enough) they will freeze headcount and eventually, remote the entire technical / production department to the target (usually india) and left with just product managers in Singapore. Retraining workers are useless... career switch to a business management role is something more practical. All technical skilled jobs will be lost eventually sadly. No matter how highly skilled you are (Phd or even professionally), there is no future if the entire department is removed away haha...

@@Magurosenbei I do not agree at all that all Technical skilled jobs will be lost eventually. Hello, technical skills encompass a very wide area than you think - Product design , Quality system , Automation , project management and Business Development . In my technical career spanning 45 years and in Product Design, Quality , Toolings , Project management and Business Development functions . And all these are skills in the above areas not taught at University particularly post graduate like masters or PhD . Perhaps some in the bachelor programme but the bulk is via actual practice in industry . Honestly, I do not think India had skilled Engineers in most of the areas I wrote . Not even China, where I worked from 2006 to 2019. We still need to send Engineers and Managers to manage these functions in our overseas factory. There are still a lot of Singaporeans highly skill in these areas and these will not be managed remotely like what you wrote. That is the reason why Singapore still train many technicians and Craftmen in their Poly and Techical institute , not Doctors or PhD . How to not let them weasel their way out of a failure, fiasco or flaw : The best improvement Hussain Bolt, the fastest sprinter, is if he Compares himself with himself yesterday. If he compares with lousier runners , he will never break record. So, when policies fail, someone will say, at least better than other countries. You can corner them by saying it's not proper comparison to compare different countries because almost every parameter is different. SG today must be compared with SG 4 years ago or something like that. SG leaders are paid uniquely different than all the other "mediocre" leaders. Who has the cheek to compare with lowly paid leaders when they are paid extremely handsomely? So, SimplyGo, ERP2, "Affordable" public housing which has past $1m etc. Corner them by telling them not to compare with other country but compare apple with apple. This will corner them and they will be in trouble.

I am a born and bred Singaporean who served my NS and pay my dues. I disagree with your statement. The comment of "reducing the influx of foreigners" is too wide and ambiguous. Do you have your stats? What 'level' of foreigners? We need foreign labour for construction, shipping and F&B. without these 'influx', Singapore cannot function as we don't have sufficient manpower locally. I do know of many foreign MNCs who was coaxed by our EDB to invest in Singapore and created many jobs for our locals. But in return, they needed a certain number of EPs to bring in their core team. Do we tell them No? Or see the silver lining that by getting in these foreigners (they pay taxes), many other jobs will be created? There are also another segment of foreigners who bring new knowledge, skills, expertise that will improve our industry, and up our status internationally. We say we selectively bring in these talents. Our birth rates is not sufficient to replenish our work force. We all know of peers who will not marry, or not have children (or have more than 1 kid) regardless of how much the govt dishes out. These are dynamics / mentality of our population that are many dimensional which cannot be solved that easily. Do we let the population age and let our workforce reduce over time? I say we bring in foreigners of similar culture and embed them in our society. bigger & better industries + bigger workforce = higher GDP We can only do these if we have good and appropriate immigration policies. I applaud your tenancity in Singapore politics. But I suggest you shift your sole focus from 'bringing down the government', to actions that better our society and community at large. Thank you.
