About Dr. David Johnson
Dr. David Johnson is a molecular biologist at New Mexico State University, and has collaborated with Peter Byck at Arizona State University, Richard Teague at Texas A&M Agrilife Center, and the United State’s Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service. His work explores paths to improve food security, reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide, and increase productivity and profitability through the development of beneficial microbial communities in farm and rangeland soils. Dr. Johnson is a co-inventor with his science collaborator and wife, Hui-Chun Su Johnson, of the Johnson-Su Composting Bioreactor. The invention allows for more biologically enhanced compost at much less the cost and energy requirement of conventional methods. By providing a non-disruptive aeration system, fungal communities can thrive resulting in higher soil fertility and crop yields once applied. Additionally, Dr. Johnson is lead author on a breakthrough paper in PeerJ scientific journal, titled “Adaptive multi-paddock grazing management’s influence on soil food web community structure for: increasing pasture forage production, soil organic carbon, and reducing soil respiration rates in southeastern USA ranches.” This paper finds that Adaptive Multi-Paddock (AMP) grazing - a common academic term for Holistic Planned Grazing - out performed conventional grazing systems in numerous important measures. These included standing crop biomass, pasture photosynthetic capacity, fungal to bacterial ratio, soil carbon accrual, and CO2 respiration reduction. Regarding the latter two measures, Dr. Johnson’s research shows if AMP grazing were applied on grasslands and savannas globally, the net yearly atmospheric CO2 load would be reduced by about 6.6 billion tons, or 18% of the total.

Ok so I’ve made 7 Johnson su bioreactors and I disagree on one thing the hes says never let it freeze I’m in southern Ontario and my piles over winter and always have tons of worms in the spring plus the way I see it is I’m growing out biology that’s adapted to my weather has to deal with the hot and cold

The best tasting beef I've ever eaten... AND... the worst beef I've ever eaten were both "Grass Fed". (Not for chickens though... free range wins BIG 4 both meat and eggs) Nutritionally, our Beef became a problem in the mid 1900's (heart disease) when feeding them grain was done for "finishing"...then using Antibiotics to aid weight gain. I'm following some groups studying "Grass Fed Beef and Nutrition" and early results are phenomenal. Omega-3 to Omega-6 imbalances are totally reversed and micronutrient availability improves remarkably...sometimes. Fortunately, nutritional improvements generally accompany better taste (though great taste can also result from horrible Corn Finished Beef + Antibiotics). Complicated Subject... due to the Genetics of both the forage mixes (mixes of over 8 species from 4 or more families of forage plants is optimal for Soil Health and for Plant health and growth) and the genetics of the cattle... our current cattle and forage plants WERE BRED for Inorganically Fertilized Monoculture (1 Species) Pastures and for Grain Finished Beef. Developing the best Species (cattle and forage plants) for optimal forage nutrient absorption and animal nutrient absorption is a slow process... but "good enough" results are already available. P.S. Grain fed beef and dairy animals are chronically sick... grains are not compatible with a cow's digestion system. A huge (>10,000 acre) cattle farm in Austrailia saves hundreds of thousands of $$ on Veternary Bills annualy after switching to "Managed Grazing" schemes.

I remember a Dr Johnson publication where pot trials were made adding increasing amounts of compost. I dont think the amounts were presented in kg or volume. Instead, the compost was increased in the necesary amount necesary for different fungal to bacteria ratios.

The finished compost can be agitated in non-chlorinated water (rainwater is best) to release the beneficial organisms into suspension in the water. Then, use an in-furrow injector just behind where the seed is planted with a no-till drill. So, the liquid hits the seed on the soil before the machine covers it. Or make a slurry with the compost, cover the seeds with it, and plant them. Dr. Johnson has a seed coat recipe on online.

the issue is manpower, i know no farmers who have time and manpower to make all this i cannot even get them to look at your video we need to find a way to spray this info and make this johnsoson sur available and let it stay at the root of the plants or trees, , on my side i add 15% biochar to johnson sue traditional reactor we are building 150 of those , now we have about 20 assemble by now we have large building 7 story high so reactor on first level heating the other level. we are in the north and weto develop this in canada soon where it is a lot colder.i know many farmers in usa and canada they work terribly hard and they are under extreme pressure from all side even from mother nature...who doesn t always help..

It's a hard roll eyes that this guy touts a simple wire cage compost pile as a 'bioreactor' and names it after himself/wife - and then calls it a Johnson-Su during his presentation rather than a compost pile. The only 'invention' was making some holes in the compost to prevent anerobic conditions. Can do that for any compost pile. Should have named it 'lazy-ass compost pile'.

The invention is aeration, moisture maintenance for only aerobic growth, vermiculture, mulching size, and length of fermentation. The results are phenomenal. He's not selling it. You make your own for cheap.
