''100 BILLION dollars were spent several years ago on stents and bypasses. They're dangerous, invasive, and largely ineffective, yet something as simple as lifestyle changes can actually prevent and even reverse disease at a fraction of a cost. The only side effects are good ones.'' - Dr. Dean Ornish
According to the CDC, about 659,000 people in the United States die from heart disease each year. That’s 1 in every 4 deaths. A staggering 100 BILLION dollars were spent several years ago on stents and bypasses. But how effective are those dangerous, invasive, and costly procedures in improving the patients' quality of life? Is there an alternative?
Today's guest is Dr. Dean Ornish, the founder and president of the nonprofit Preventive Medicine Research Institute. He is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and the author of seven books, all national bestsellers. Dr. Dean Ornish has directed revolutionary research proving that lifestyle changes can often reverse or undo the progression of many of the most common and costly chronic diseases and even begin reversing aging at a cellular level. He documented his findings in his landmark book UnDo It!
Dr. Dean Ornish studied medicine under Dr. Michael DeBakey, an American vascular surgeon and cardiac surgeon, scientist and medical educator known for his trailblazing efforts in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
Today, Dr. Dean Ornish is helping people regain their health with his program, The Only Program Scientifically Proven to Reverse Heart Disease, which is reimbursed by Medicare from anywhere in the U.S. ’Nuff said! Let's dive into this eye-opening episode and UnDo It!
✅ What we discuss in this episode:
- Dr. Dean Ornish walks us through that pivotal moment when he met Woodstock Guru Sri Swami Satchidananda and how that encounter changed the direction of his life
- How stress increases our predisposition to cardiovascular diseases and the worst thing about being depressed
- Is there something wrong with traditional medicine?
- Dr. Dean Ornish talks about the joy that his work brings, enabling people to have options vs. undergoing costly medical procedures
- How to UnDo It! Eat Well, Move More, Stress Less, Love More
- How comprehensive lifestyle changes influence DNA methylation and gene expression
- Does eating specific foods (sweet potato meals vs. blueberry vs. cheeseburgers) influence cancer genes?
- What hope do we have in getting the message to people about the way we view our health and the overall healthcare system?
- Choosing a plant-based diet - What you gain is so much better than what you give up! Watch The Game Changers, a revolutionary film about plant-based eating, protein, and strength.
- The Ornish Diet - What you include in your diet is as important as what you exclude.
- The Gut-Brain Connection and how our bodies are affected by the food we eat

I found the pushback against Ornish to be inexplicable, until I realized the vast profit denied to industry, if people took his advice.

WFPB for nearly nine years. Sadly, my youngest sister was just diagnosed with Graves Disease. She already has High Blood Pressure and High Cholesterol. Incredibly, she stated she's not ready to change what she eats!!!

I have been plant base for over two years because of reading Dr Colin T Cambell"s books. Dr Ornish and many others are hands down proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that this way of eating IS the rightest way for us to fuel ourselves. Love Dr Ornish's emphasis on the importance of love and spiritual food,, thank you ladies for your excellent podcast.

Dr. Ornish should be awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine. His discovery about reversing heart disease is monumental and the greatest new development in health for the past 50 years. Not to mention his telomere research and that prostate cancer has been reversed. I agree with Alexandra that it is FANTASTIC that Medicare now covers Dr. Ornish's program for heart disease patients. Thanks a million to Switch4Good for presenting Dr. Ornish, who is a national treasure!

Love this podcast - the guest speakers are excellent and the content is so educational- even though I have been vegan for 12 years - I can always learn something listening to this podcast and the great interviews- keep it up

In 1973 Dr Ornish met a Swami, a Hindu renunciate, not a shaman. The intrinsic Hindu belief is “Sarve Bhavantu Sukinah” meaning “Let every being in the world be happy and well”. Looking at all with love and peace stimulates the same within

After 3 years of just plant food humans suffer, as I myself found out, as soon as I went to bacon, beef, turkey, eggs, raw butter and raw cheese my health improved immensely. it reversed hypothyroidism and depression.

He should do a film on the 1973 shaman experience. Every time I hear him refer to that story I can see it; its so impactful for people to consider a fulfilling life ✨️

I've said what greatness gets lost when kids commit suicide. Imagine where we'd be if the good doctor killed himself in college.

if he would have the courtesy, to speak slower and pronounce more clearly, he could maybe reach people, who really need his help. and not only fast-speaking fast-thinking people with academic, american background also is to my thinking “name-dropping“ not the way, an evolved/highly evolved soul wood utilize in a video, that COULD be very helpful to the world......: very disturbing “elitism“..... definitely more a book-seller than a follower of our lord JESUS

I agree that it can be hard to listen if the pace of a speaker is very fast. I believe that you can definitely use the controls in RU-vid to slow down the speed of the playback, which makes listening simpler. I am very happy to embrace the doctor's fast pace of speaking when what he is explaining is so accurate, insightful, and good for our individual and collective health. I see it as a reflection of Dr. Ornish's true enthusiasm and drive to help others as soon as possible, especially given how the U.S. is really approaching a healthcare crisis for many reasons. Reasons include that reimbursement is way too focused on procedures instead of on prevention and lifestyle/diet interventions that can help those already having chronic diseases.

Normally I watch videos on RU-vid at 1.5 or even 1.75, you are right he speaks quite fast I had to put it to 1.25 to understand him clearly. I love the feature of being able to change the speed.
