I work at the AMNH. There’s a full-sized Gamera poster in one of the paleontology labs, and a ton of toy dinosaurs atop virtually every office shelf. There’s Spider-Man stuff in the arachnid department, and just about every office has cut-out Far Side strips relevant to that particular scientist’s field.

Excellent. While not the first iteration of dinosaurs in the a core set of D&D rules (the 1977 Monster Manual had several pages and they had at least one or two 'lost world' type modules in that era), it goes far beyond them for those wanting dinosaurs. The necromancer animating long dead dinosaurs or bringing them from another world is also awesome - I once had an evil wizard summon a Tyrannosaurus Rex into a more 'medieval' style AD&D game.
@glarnboudin4462

It goes back to the earliest days of the game - cheap plastic dinosaurs made good monster miniatures.

The Dramatic Reinterpretation chapter might do the most to get DnD players into palaeontology. I'm not a big palaeo guy but I am a big history guy and one of the biggest misunderstandings I keep encountering when talking about or teaching history is that study of the past is dry and static because everything is already set in stone. The Dramatic Reinterpretation chapter gives a great showcase of how wrong that is, even when studying long dead animals we're still learning and discovering new things and conceptualising new ideas around them. The creature may be dead, but the science around it is very alive and dynamic.

Genuinely speaking, Dr. Drohlin's has been a massive part of my current campaign. The statblocks are fun, the new player races are fantastic and the variants and mutations allowed can make for some really fun times, and the domestication rules are beloved by my party. Soon they'll get the chance to try and tame one of the bigger fellas to make a howdah for! Genuinely speaking it's the best book for dinosaurs in 5e (And soon to be PF2!), and one of the best extinction themed books out there for TTRPGS. If you get the chance, also look up The Book of Extinction, which is more recently focused extinct animals. Synergizes very well!

Well, there exists a very old module in the 80's that takes the players to an island. Dinosaurs inhabit that island. ^^ It's called: "The Isle of Dread" (X1, number 9043). The writers are David Cook and Tom Moldvay. On the orange cover are three adventures facing a tyrannosaurus rex (kinda). Edit: That world where The Isle of Dread exists is called Mystara. That is also a hollow world so you can have it both ways. ;)

Really excited about it. People not including dinosaurs in their fantasy settings is such a bummer, maybe because most people still think of dinosaurs and imagine those giant reptilian beasts from Jurassic Park. I bet if you put a dromaeosaur in a fantasy setting and just called it a cockatrice, nobody would even bat an eye. That being said, I do have some ideas just in case anyone wants to use them: 1) If you want more excuses for settings with dinosaurs, seedworlds are always your friends. Just imagine a world linked to Earth where the portal opens every few million years or so. If not that, a secluded valley dwelt by a dragon who is tens of millions of years old and has an entourage of non-avian dinosaurs. 2) Small feathered (non-avian) dinosaurs fit everywhere. So if you want dinosaurs but don't want a setting with too many of them, you could always have your main character walk around with a velociraptor on their shoulders and just call it a houndbird or something like that, and no one would mind.

3/3.5 didn't have a straight up supplement, but did have a massive pile of them scattered around different books...and there used to be an insanely massive thread on the WotC's official D&D message boards that covered what seemed like hundreds if not thousands of different extinct species. Back then, I'd spent almost a year setting up a campaign that was more of a stone age one and leaving dinos out, but that thread had everything for creatures there, and it also fed, heavily, into the D20 Modern stuff with a Pellucidar/Lost World type setting for that

For some different things, I would love you to review some older tv/movies... yeah, mostly I just want someone else to watch The Velvet Claw! I still love that series (even if it is a bit dated). I love the animation, I love that it's 2D, I love Derek Jacobi's voice and the cool 80's opening! Incidentally if anyone in the UK remembers and can tell me the name of the programme (I think it was on channel 4 or 5), probably early 90s, they had animatronic models (at least in the opening/closing) - they covered Stegosaurus and I think Andrewsarchus. It had very moody lighting over the models, but they were really good for the time. I half remember this series (I think of 4 or 6 shows, each one about a different unrelated extinct animal). Would love to find this show again! I think there was also a studio based show that has presenters and kids doing tasks that also had some cool 2D animation (I seem to remember something about Coelophysis and maybe Triceratops) would love to find this show again too (could've been any channel 1-5 early 90s, we had a small segment of it on tape - that had been taped over, so literally only a couple of minutes of it!). If you remember what this was anyone, please let me know!

I guess a strong childhood interest in dinosaurs could be the first sign of incipient Nerdism. I say 'could' because there may be other signs I've simply missed, being something of a nerd myself. And it may be even more telling if the kid shows interest in both what came before dinosaurs, and what came immediately after them, as I did. My SF Nerdism was fully mature before I hit my teens, growing up as I did with Star Trek TOS, Doctor Who, and Blakes'7. The fantasy side of it didn't really appear until my early teens, when I had a fateful encounter with the Dragonriders of Pern. And before anyone asks, yes, I am into Pokemon, having started with Pokemon Crystal, back-tracking for Red, Blue, Yellow, Silver and Gold, before following the series through . I am currently on my second full run-through of Pokemon Scarlet, having begun the DLC Teal Mask a day or so ago. That's why it's been so much fum watching Paleo Analysis evolve during his 'History of the Earth ' series, brings back good memories as well as a few chuckles!

When it comes ot adding dinosaurs to any setting, lets say a medieval fantasy setting, the best and most fun one can have is making up your own names. Sometimes someone is uncreative but then you have like Warcraft where you don't have raptors but Ravasaurs or devisaurs for Trexes. So instead of your asausal velicoraptors but you want to add both the accurate and jurassic park, simple, for the accurate, you can call them jungle raptors or Raptors of Paradise. So instead of Stegosaurs, you have plate backs. Spinos? Sail backs. Trexes? Forest Tyrants. Bracosaurs? Great Thunderers. Brontos?: Thunder necks. Triceratops? Shields horns. Styras? Shield lances. Ankylosaurs? Hammer Tails.

I didn’t even make it to the end of the video before buying this book 😆 Looks awesome!!! Edit: I just received the book, and it is awesome! If you play D&D and like anything dinosaur related (from Walking With Dinosaurs to Jurassic Park/World to Dinotopia) then you will love this book!

0:40 I think that you got Ikrandraco, a pterosaur described in 2020, confused with Torukjara, which was described in 2024.

Yess~ VLDL~! And now for the rest of the video, which I look forward to learning from you today. :3 EDIT: Even if this video wasn't focused on education, I still learned some stuff, and this looks AWESOME. I'd also be more than happy to follow you along another journey should you find some other type of content you enjoy creating. :3
