I watched my best friend lose EVERYTHING because of a high risk pregnancy.. Couldn't work from being sick 24/7; lost her job, lost her car, lost her home, back and forth to the hospital, and still having to care for 2 other kids. All while her doctor didn't do shit but deliver the baby. Luckily she's still here and got everything back 20x's over, but having that careless doctor could've cost her her life.

Chile, I had an ectopic pregnancy for two weeks. Went to the er twice and called my OBGYN on the phone because I was bleeding too much and wearing diapers because it was so bad. They sent me home and told me unless I was about to pass out, I was ok. I finally broke down in the grocery store from the pain and drove myself to the ER where a different doctor knew immediately but couldn’t confirm it until I was on the operating table and she found the baby not where it was supposed to be. My OBGYN called me to tell me my HCG levels spiked and they didn’t even know I had just had surgery to remove the baby and my tube the day before. I’ll never take what dr. Jackie said lightly. People accuse black women of crying wolf meanwhile we knocking on deaths door.

I was offended by what Dr Jackie said, because I almost died giving birth and my son was born 2 months premature. My OB was blk and she was a mean spirit doc. The white nurses heard me and treated me better and saved my life and my child. I had Preeclampsia and hypertension and my OB missed it! I was at stroke level and almost died during my c section. So not ALL BLK WOMEN cry wolf for a doctor note. Some of us were in life or death situations and didn't realize it or know it

I’ve personally experienced how we aren’t taken seriously as black women in the healthcare system. I’ve unfortunately experienced this mostly from women doctors. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I went to the emergency room several times with severe side pain and was told each time that I was dehydrated and just needed water. The pain became so severe over the next few days that my husband took me back to the emergency room but to a different location and stressed to the staff that this was not just dehydration like we had been told. It took a white male doctor to finally listen and take me seriously. I ended up being diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism in both lungs. The blood clots were so large that he couldn’t even believe I was still alive. I thank God every day for that doctor because he truly saved our lives. Regardless of whether she was just speaking to her core audience, Dr. Jackie’s comments were reckless and further supports the narrative that black women don’t experience pain that same as other races.

The base of Dr Jackie's patients is not the average black woman. Its wealthy black women. She is an elitist and she got a nasty attitude. I dont think you canfullyu understand how damaging her statement is. As a woman who had a very difficult and life-threatening pregnancy, I took personal offense what she said cause i had to fight hard to get proper medical care because my symptoms were off at first. Thank God my baby and I came out okay, but i had to advocate hard for myself.

Medical racial bias is very serious and dangerous. If you believe black woman are more dramatic about their symptoms then you are more likely to disregard them. Which means there’s a greater chance of you dismissing serious concerns which contributes to the mortality rate. Very dangerous. Secondly, If the majority of Jackie’s patients are black, how can she conclude that they are MORE dramatic than other races? Does she see enough other races to have a valid comparative analysis albeit anecdotal.

Thing is, she don’t know anything about being a pregnant woman. And I believe her inability to have compassion for pregnant women has to do with inability to get pregnant. The extremes of pregnancy are unknown to her personally so it’s easy for her to be questionable of other women’s experiences. Kinda like how a man always thinks a pregnant woman is overreacting because they don’t have a personal reference point. That’s what Jackie gives…

That’s just it though, Q. Too many Black women are dying on the birthing bed BECAUSE it is assumed that she’s exaggerating her symptoms. This country is one of the few “developed” countries that expect pregnant women to work like mules. Idc if she stubbed her toe, if she’s expecting and not feeling well she should not have to go to work! No matter how slight her symptoms! Uncomfortable mom makes an uncomfortable baby

I cant give Dr Jackie any grace. I've had three children and when went into labor with my last child a black woman who looked a whole lot like Dr Jackie looked me straight in my face and told me there was no way that I could be in labor and said that I was too calm. She checked my cervix and I was 6 centimeters. It hurt and felt like she was calling me a liar. That was my 3RD child and i had been having contractions since the night before.

I work in healthcare and see a lot of malingering , secondary gain and med seeking or folks wanting docs to put them on disability …on the other side …I was a high risk pregnancy and I am grateful that my obgyn (black woman) listened to me and respected my experience and did not overgeneralize that I was like the folks I described above.

I work in Obstetrics. I’m not shocked she made statements like this. A lot of OBs, including black OBs, don’t give a damn about their patients. The way a lot of black patients are treated during L & D is horrible. You couldn’t pay me to give birth in a US hospital. I’ll take a Midwife any day over an OB!

There are studies that doctors & nurses don't believe black woman about their pain & tolerance. I don't believe it's always intentional, and there are good doctors that can make mistakes, however I feel that the criticism & outrage are valid because pregnant black woman & their babies have a higher mortality rates. This is serious, not just some girls chatting, but that doubt is kinda racist imho, whether conscious or subconscious. That doubt can be deadly.

Dr. Jackie or any other doctor worrying about what someone is doing on their job is out of order. If they're not feeling well, and need to be off for a little while, then so be it. Most aren't trying to get off from work. I see pregnant black women working in office settings, fast food, grocery, etc.

Dr Jackie has NEVER had a child so I find it interesting of how cold hearted she can come across to pregnant 🤰🏽 black women. Even if they JUST DONT WANNA WORK... ask your selves how do you feel when you don't feel your best 🤔. Add even the HEALTHIEST PERFECT pregnancy on top of that. It's not easy at all and you do not feel your better self when pregnant. Geesh, can a sister get a break of understanding from her own. Wow ‼️ 👌🏾

First of all, you have absolutely no business speaking on this matter this matter is for women who are able to carry children. Dr. Jackie is a OB/GYN, who delivers babies and takes care of the mothers who delivers babies. So extending her grace is not an option, sir.

No grace given to her! The same grace she wants extended to her, she and all the other ladies refuse to give Quad🤷🏽‍♀️ on top of her speaking on something she knows nothing about because she has never carried a child. It’s one thing to deliver them but another thing to birth them💯 you can’t give an opinion on something you haven’t experienced Ms Lady. Even if a percent of women may do what you said, that comment she made was uncalled for. If they do fake it to get out of work, how does that affect her🤷🏽‍♀️

I think some conversations men need to stay out of and vice versa. Sometimes all you can do is listen and be supportive. Dr Jackie was wrong and my lifetime and experience is shared by many black women who will tell you that we often don't receive the same level of care as others and are expected to be "strong" and "get over it". A man doesn't have the right to give Jackie a pass on this.

Funky, that statement from a medical professional like Dr. Jackie is very dangerous. If you are a black woman who has to struggle to get doctors to listen to the symptoms. A woman bleeds to death because no one is listening to her pleadings for help and is not being taken seriously. Too many women are dying and losing babies. There is no space for even a “classy-based” doctor to utter a comment like this one. It wasn’t at the kitchen table.

Funky I love you but I’m going to have to vehemently disagree with you about what Dr. Jackie said. Words are POWERFUL. Especially when talking about black women and our maternal health. We are already not believed as it is. Her doing that only strengthens that belief that we are all dramatic and not really in pain. Other non black physicians will take her word as bond. She specifically pinpointed black women

QUE, this lane is not for you regarding Dr. Jackie. She spoke her heart around the kitchen table, and it was recorded and shared with the public. Look at this way. Most women do not want to be off work before they have a baby. They want that time after the baby is born. If anyone complains of pain or not feeling well, it is up to the provider to figure it out without judgment. Per CMS every doctor signs and oath to take care of their patients........

I was blessed to have 4 very easy and healthy pregnancies but I only worked during one of those. I would never take my experiences and put those on other women and say they are “exaggerating’. Many women have very difficult pregnancies. If you have not pushed a baby out of your body, please don’t think you know what it’s like or what we feel/have felt.

Q, as a healthcare provider I agree with you about Dr. Jackie. However, as a friend reminded me, what she said could also make non black providers comfortable with giving half ssa care. What she said promotes the narrative to non black providers that black women are dramatic and exaggerate their symptoms.

It’s always someone that never experienced pregnancy or child birth with the loudest opinions. I get it however some women are more sensitive to what’s going on in their body and to be quite honest that standard blood work panel that is given simply isn’t enough to really treat someone postpartum or pregnant. The comment screamed out of touch, when her reputation is centered around that very thing. We can extend grace but I don’t that automatically dismisses disappointment.
@1MsBeauty1
@1MsBeauty1 8 месяцев назад
I agree! I got the same thing from what she was saying. She literally said "sometimes" which means not everyone but there are some women who exaggerate to get out of work. I have heard of people trying to get over. For that reason, it affects the seriousness of those women who really are high risk and having difficulties. I am not defending her bc I have no experience with her, but I understood the angle. I hope that we as women also keep pushing and advocating for our health because there are drs who don't take us serious unfortunately. If we experience lack of support, empathy, etc, we have to listen to our bodies and go somewhere else.

My cousin works with Dr. Jackie and she said she comes off cold and rude. She already was showed she didn't like plus sized women and if she said this on live, imagine what she says about black women when the cameras are off. Friends of her will be biased towards her because you're her friend but she has to be held accountable for it. Why do we pick and choose who to demonize and who to absolve? What if it was a regular black doctor from down the street instead of Dr. Jackie that said it? You would probably have a lot to say then but because it is her, she's absolved. Q I love you because you give it to us straight no chaser, just like Trina & Rashida on some BS so is Dr. Jackie! Even if she thought it she shouldn’t have said it. I’m 55 been going to the Doctor since I was a child. My Mother always took us to the doctor 👩🏽‍⚕️ & dentist 🦷 fatefully. Maybe some people play that game, but if she feels that way then maybe it’s time for her to retire. A lot of black professionals look 👀 down on the underprivileged that come to their office. Last year I had a black female doctor & 👩🏽‍⚕️ she was so unprofessional I politely put her in her place & asked for another doctor 👩🏽‍⚕️that was not black. It’s possible that Dr. Jackie is playing in our faces as well.
