If you read the NT in its entirete context, it’s clear from the Gospels and Acts especially, that Jesus Christ selected a number of men who were empowered with his authority to preside at the Eucharist and to forgive sins (John 20:23). In the remaining books it is the Apostles who appoint men, after they have been taught, to go spread the Gospel. Even Paul recognizes their authority when he comes to them to settle a dispute Acts 15:2. The Catholic word for Priest comes from presbyter. They have the distinct authority to be ministers to God’s people through Apostolic Succession, as the first apostles did. No disciple or other man in the NT decides for himself to start “his own thing” apart from the direct lineage of the Apostles. Paul being the sole exception as God had special intentions for him. Note Acts 19:13-16 especially v. 15 “Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are you?” 1 Peter 2:5-9 does not say that every person is now a priest - a presbyter. But it does first say that we are a “chosen race” - Peter, the head of the apostles, is rather using “holy priesthood” to describe the spiritual church of believers who are holy and set apart and what is expected of us.
