On Monday, October 17, 2005 Dr. John Carlos addressed the crowd at San Jose State University for the Sculpture Unveiling Ceremony commemorating the historic stand for Human Rights demonstrated in Mexico City in 1968. Dr. Carlos was introduced by "The White Guy" in that famous photo Peter Norman

This is what it's supposed to be about. I am sorrowful that Australia treated this humanitarian without an ounce of humanity, and only "pardoned" Peter 6 years AFTER his death. To Tommie, Peter and John...salut!

That's what really sucks about doing the right thing, at the time it bucks the system and the system wants to maintain control. I actually got a chance to chat with him that day and he was an amazing human being and an average guy. At the same time.

But I am happy he was assimilated into the system later on.as you can hear he got inducted to 1999 hall of fame..which shows they accepted him... Nonetheless an official apology for not sending him to next Olympics was definitely required

Show it to kids in schools so they can begin to really understand what honor, humility and integrity mean.

I remember when Peter Norman died, October 2006 ; Carlos and Smith travelled to the funeral here in Melbourne. For me, gee, these two giants of U.S history - sporting and otherwise - being here was just indescribable ; to see them as pallbearers, gee, what an honour to this most distinguished of Australian sportsman. Norman was shunned by the Olympic movement here, a shameful act. His time in Mexico City would've won gold at the next Olympics, Munich 1972 ; Olympic officials here barred him after 1968.

I had the honor of speaking with Peter before this ceremony. The mutual respect that he had for John, Tommy and the plight of Black Americans touched me deeply. I agree that it was unfortunate that he was shunned by Australian athletics. Peter was a great man who was caring and personable. He is truly missed.

There is a phrase here in Poland that goes, (and this translation may be butchered), "Live your life in such a way, so that when they build a statue to you, it does not need to be protected by police." I won't insult your intelligence explaining that (Robert E. Lee), but instead add that Peter Norman was offered a statue while he was still alive and he said, "No." 'Leave the podium position empty for others to stand there.' Smith, Norman, and Carlos were first, second and third in the race, but I hope they tied for being heroes.

No hace tanto. Ni siquiera para esa fecha la sociedad australiana había evolucionado.

I wouldn't say they gave away any glory. They got the glory because they did the right thing. " The greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it

damir T. You’re right they gave nothing away. They did however lose quite a bit. Eventually history didn’t forget how they did the right thing and rewarded them with Doctorates.

can't put a price on being honorable admirable and heroic. often consequences are great but the reward is greater...

damir T. Just as Kaep is paying the price for challenging the same status quo that John and Tommie challenged 50 years ago. I wonder if it will be 40 years before he is universally recognized?
@malmz1

He meant the glory to be recognized as an athlete. Of course that glory is vane and can't compare to the recognition they received as civil rights advocates.
