I got to see Dr. John in Kansas City before he passed away, he had to use 2 canes to walk and he tore the place up , he also played the guitar, he stood up and some stage hands carried the guitar out and strapped it on him,he was a hell of a guitar player , I was very fortunate to have seen him, a great talent

I had no idea he played guitar. People who know more than me say he is phenominal on keyboard.

The Dr. has left the building and across this mortal plain . I cried tonight from sadness, as he boarded that heavenly train. He walked on Gilded Splinters with a Zulu staff of light and as he lifted into to the sky he whispered Such a Night...

@wackyruss 11 months ago The famous chorus is mostly in Louisiana Creole French except “Chokma Finha” which is Choctaw (Native American) for “Very Good”. Iko Iko is Louisiana Creole French for “Listen, Listen!” (French: Écoute Écoute!). An Dey is Louisiana Creole French for “in the back” The French word is Derrière and shortened to “dey yay” in Louisiana Creole French. The “yay” got dropped and we were left with “an dey”. An Dan Dey means “in the back” from French. The last word is the French word for year - Année. So…. Iko Iko An Dey Chokma Finha An Dan Dey Chokma Fin Année means Listen! Listen at the back! It’s very good in the back! It’s a very Good Year! The mixing of Louisiana Creole French with the Native American Choctaw language occurred because this chant came from the “black” Mardi Gras Indian dancers dressed in elaborate costumes that perform dance battles in the streets of New Orleans. Also, the black creoles of African descent oftentimes married Choctaw Indians in Louisiana. This song is a gem with so much history behind the meaning of the words.

Docs demise is a tremendous loss. Root to stem, he was an encyclopedia of New Orleans piano styles and virtually an encyclopedia of the American pop music scene. He piano playing was extraordinary - even though he had big time chops, his musicality is only highlighted by how controlled and tasteful his playing was with this incredible rhythm section. RIP to the Night Tripper. The legend will only grow.

Damn!! Laud ha MUCY!!!!!! The best version of IKO IKO EVA (ever). I write at Substack. I guess I shouldn't inject some serious stuff here, but when you listen to this version of IKO IKO, and listen WITH YOUR SOUL, there is something of the American spirit within it that, come the 1960s, WE BEGAN TO LOSE, until today, we've become a dying culture. I'm not going to elaborate. Think about it yourselves, OR NOT. We weren't fully aware of it then, but what we had created, by 1959 [I was THERE] was what is called a "civilizational state." Everybody THOUGHT that they were "different." Like, take Chicago, for instance. You had your Polish neighborhood, Italian neighborhood, Greek neighborhood, Irish neighborhood, Black neighborhood, etc. And, unfortunately, believe it or not, you'd occassionally have RAIDS of each other's hoods, with fist fights being the central form of "communication." Yet, we were all doing the SAME THINGS, culturally. Church attendance (over 60%) VFW, YMCA, or Masonic Hall volunteering of "housewives" to help keep kids in line and busy Friday night boxing, on TV, sponsored by Gillette Patriotism OPENLY expressed in ALL communities Two-parent families Rare divorce Self-sufficiency in most neighborhoods Boys wore blue and girls wore pink (AHEM) Baseball, the American pastime. The community (ahem) "sex education" expert, whom dads took their sons to when they were "ready." The MOST a gang would do is punch you on your shoulder and demand a NICKEL No gun violence Dance halls. EVERY ethnic community had dance halls. Theatres Excellent educational facilities Hobby shops and more. In the Black community, on the south side of Chicago, where I was raised, it was NOT a "war zone," as it is today. This is what we had, and it was all BLACK-OWNED AND OPERATED: Two hospitals: Provident Hospital and Ida Mae Scott Hospital Doctors Offices Dental Offices Banks (two) Insurance companies Three mini-supermarkets Mom-and-Pop stores TV repair shops (some of them made house calls, bringing their tools and repairing at your place). Two taxi-cab companies Three theatres Two Dance Halls Restaurants A few hotels One motel Churches Funeral parlors Two-parent families Rare divorce NO GUN VIOLENCE It all got shitted away IN PART due to the so-called "social revolution" of the 1960s, which screwed up ALL communities, what with the introduction of what is now called "Woke" ideology. Well, enough. I feel like I live on another planet. When I grew up, it was STABLE in Chicago, except for the unfortunate, occassional "pastime" of THUMPING (fist fighting). Well, it is what it is.
