"Such A Night" Dr John's best known, most recorded song. I've listened to a dozen different versions of this great piano blues and in my opinion this is the best recording he made from a pianists point of view. Dr John albums: bluespianosheets.com/blues-shop/ bluespianosheets.com/ Now you can learn to play just like Otis Spann, Vince Weber, James Booker, Chase Garrett, Norah Jones and more.
Blues Piano Sheets the all new channel for everyone who loves the blues and for all the pianists searching for real advanced note for note blues piano sheet music.

Thanks for sharing that! I saw him 'round about that time give or take a year at Bumbershoots in Seattle, outside on a Friday afternoon. He played solo to a smallish crowd (maybe a 100 people?) as it was still Friday, for at least a couple of hours, to our utter delight. He did a very similar version of this tune at the time, and it's great to hear that again!

This man was such a beautiful sublime creator of music with that New Orleans stamp on it. One of the best concerts I ever attended. The great Dr comes strutting towards the stage with a cane and the attitude on display that everyone knew that the time had arrived for a party of the ages commanded by the good Dr. It's a pity that his reputation hasn't been more widely known. A unique individual following in the traditional New Orleans love of music.

"Such a Night" is a song you hear a few times when you're young, it doesn't, um, stick, but it stays with you, in the back of your mind. Then one day you think "what are those words? "if you don't want to, somebody else will', and you start searching for the song. Wow, wonderful beautiful track. And, sadly, the time gone by.
@chuckkirkpatrick6712

PLEASE tell me that that is more than just one piano player in that intro.....my God, how does he do that? And now I confess; I got to work briefly with Mac when I was an engineer at Criteria in the early 70's. Never will I forget the night I walked into studio B where Mac was totally alone, way back in the corner at the Hammond B-3 with just one light on and shining down on him as he played the most incredible stuff I ever heard. I was mesmerized by his playing that New Orleans style that defies all musical laws, swinging dotted eights with one hand and straight 4-4 with the other. The man is a freak of musical nature.

The best night of music I ever enjoyed was at Tipitina's in NOLA years ago. Went to see the good Doctor. He was supposed to start at 11:00 but in NOLA that's just a suggestion. He showed up about 12:30 all by himself.. He sat down at the piano and said in his raspy voice, "Anyting ya'll wanna hear jus write it on a nakkin and sen it on up." And then he started in. He played for the NEXT THREE HOURS. NOLA funk, show tunes, classical...UNBELIEVABLE! Then he said, "I'm kynna dry. Gonna get somethin to drink an then I'll be back..." Half an hour later he was back at the keyboard and when he finished that set IT WAS 7:30 IN THE MORNING!!! People were on their way to work. I don't think he ever repeated a song the whole time and I bet there weren't a half dozen people who left during the night. And it was all for a $5 entrance fee!!! INCREDIBLE

I'm in my late 60's, trying to gain both weight & strength to prepare for a vital surgery, and living about a mile or two from my home in a PT/Rehab center. I knew of Dr. John practically from the get-go, as I was stationed on the Gulf Coast in the early 70's. But now that I'm here after all this time, it's safe to say that he was never really on my mind a whole lot. I must have been suffering from some kind of mental deficiency back then! This guy was a monster talent! This one song is a lifetime's worth of music lessons, combined with a show of talent & palpable charisma & stage energy unparalleled in history. PERIOD.

Good Lord! There have only been a very few of these creatures on this earth. The universal force called music seems to find them and make them into conduits. Dr John didn't play music, the music played him. It moved through him as easily as the air he breathed. What a rare and beautiful wonder he was. No, this wasn't his "best." You can't give a rating to how the music flowed on any given occasion. On this day, it used him in this way.

Man coming from a guy who has played piano for almost 40 years I can't help but be in awe of his amazing piano chops. Definently my all time favorite New Orleans piano player. Amazing singer too. Not to mention he wrote the damn thing unlike so many artists who buy their "hits" from singer songwriters.

I'n a piano player, & I grew up listening to this man. 15 years or so my band was honoured to open up for the master. He watched most of our show from the side of the stage just a few feet behind where i was sitting at the piano. I confess i was almost literally crapping my pants, but it pushed me to play above myself too. He was really sweet after the show & was kind about my attempts, poured me a whiskey & patiently answered my questions about James Booker, Professor Longhair & Voodoo. They say never meet your heroes. Well it was a great pleasure to meat the Dr.

All too often overlooked by images of voo-doo and his uniquely cool character, this man's magnificent musicianship allows him to deliver the goods, regardless of genre! Mac truly CAN play it all. And his love for the people of Nawlinz is the frosting on his humanitarianism cake. May God bless you, Dr. John.

Rest in Peace Doctor John. Thanks for doing those Homespun cassettes back in the day about New Orleans Piano which introduced the world's piano players to the style and introducing James Booker to me. We all love you.
