Fabulous! And the music was perfect. I adore Leo McKern. Excellent cast.

so incredibly good - a great story, so well written and acted. Leo McKern is always amazing :) (the author knew his theatre well, which made it much more exciting for me. i loved all the philosophical discussions and the actress who pointed out that accidents probably do happen during other plays, too. but that unmentioned play will never live down it's reputation among theatre people. just like whistling in the dressing room won't LOL) thank you so much 🌷🎭

Leo McKern seems to have cornered the market in pontificating windbags . ie. Rumpole and now Doc Johnson. Johnson was from Lichfield and spoke with a pronounced local accent all his life. Leo was an Aussie who had a long career in British TV and film incl memorable roles in A Man For All Seasons ( 1966 ) , The Prisoner ( number two) and my favourite : The Day The Earth Caught Fire ( 1961 ) . He passed away in 2002.

@@2msvalkyrie529 The Holy Pontif is the Pope, incidentally. The word must have been taken up by the Protestants in England as an insult.

@@elizabethdarley8646 The word 'pontif' comes from latin, through old french and means 'a bridge'. The pope is therefore a bridge between this world and that beyond. As that, it is used in secular language for someone speaking from high authority, or those purporting to do so.

This was great! But Johnson and Bosworth should have got together at the end.

Boswall was mentioned in some of the Sherlock Holmes case stories.

Yes, 'a Boswell' used in Sherlock Holmes to describe Dr. Watson. 'A Boswell' has come to mean 'an amanuensis'.

It really doesn't get much better than this in terms of plausible historicity and character acting from the BBC. I think William F. Buckley Jr. was a tad harsh when he described American radio drama from the same period as 'the work of hacks for the consumption of morons', nevertheless this piece does show a certain 'je ne sais croix' when laid beside it's American rivals.
