Hello friends, I've been looking over your comments on this video... thank you so much... and I hear you loud and clear - I will be telling the story of the demon bloodline of Edward I in next week's video!
Something I would like to see is a story about people who defied gallows etiquette. Were there people who declined to speak? Or wouldn’t forgive the executioner?
Every time I hear "you are very welcome" I chuckle. Because while I know Dr. Kat means it as "you are very welcome, come and enjoy" I hear it as "This place is awesome and you are very welcome that I created it". I love it.
Of course we want the story of Edward 's descent from a demon! If we didn't like a good story why would we love history? Also of course we could argue that the Koh-i-noor was stolen by conquest,as it undoubtedly was, and should be handed back. Given the history of the jewel having passed through rulers by conquest , murder and revolt however it is hard to see who has a "moral" right to it.
Who else automatically "thumbs up's" Dr. Kat's videos because you KNOW they're gonna be good? :-) Oh, and I DEFINITELY want that demon-lineage story! :)
That last bit was terribly sad! Poor young boy trying to save his mother and giving away this jewel. And it is still part of the regalia. A bit gross, honestly. Loved this episode, and want to hear about the demon bloodline!
I'd completely forgotten about Thomas Blood and his dastardly plot!!! You are a natural born storyteller Dr Kat, so articulate, informative and entertaining. Please would you tell us more around the story of Edward Longshank's bloodline being allegedly descended from a demon. I love your channel, stay safe xx
Love how you put bad in quotes lol He was bad enough where, like Fabrisse pointed out, his flaws changed England & the U.S. forever thru the Magna Carta!
These tales are so entertaining! History is honestly so humorous at times, it amazes me that anyone thinks it is a boring subject! The last part about the young maharaja’s diamond is a difficult tale, though. I visited Agra Fort in Uttar Pradesh in India this February, a historic royal residence which once housed a famous diamond that is now in the Tower of London. I saw the diamond in question last year when I visited the Tower, and when I was stood in that beautiful fort I really felt like it belonged back in India. It is a great shame that we took so much from them.
I always think “even if one could get away with it, what would one do with them; wear them around the house?” 😂. I would definitely like to hear more about the ill-tempered Edward I, Dr. Kat!
Re: demonic bloodline. I think Richard, the Lionheart said it best, “From the devil we came and to the devil we will go.” I love Plantagenet lore and would love to hear your take on the tale.
What a wonderful telling! I am not British, so knew nothing of Thomas Blood. What an interesting historical character! I can't help but wonder what he had over King Charles to not only keep his head, skin, limbs, etc., but to also gain lands, a pardon, and other rewards! I always have some small hope that new historical information will come to light as someone opens a dusty old book, or box, or attic, within their family's possession. That does happen on occasion, doesn't it? Would love to hear some of those kinds of stories!
This is the story that the Angevin aka Plantagenet dynasty were descended from a water demon called Melusine who supposedly married one of the 10th century Counts of Anjou.
As long as we’re making a Wish List, May we add the Declaration of Arbroath as a topic? On reading a translation of the highlights of it (on a tea towel at the Culloden battlefield gift shop) I found echos of the US Declaration of Independence. Is that too much of a reach? Many of the clan family names on the headstones at Culloden are signatories of the Declaration of 1776.
Yes, would definitely like to hear the story of how Edward I's bloodline is descended from a demon. Sounds intriguing. Would love to know how such a story came about
There is an absolutely delightful movie from Sacha Guitry, made in 1937, "Pearls of the Crown", which purports to trace the history, theft, and recovery(?) of the pearls stolen from the crown of England. Within a framed narrative, Guitry, his wife Jacqueline Delubac, and a host of gifted international actors play a range of characters from Francois I of France, Henry VIII, Mary Queen of Scots and many others, to present day investigators on the prowl for the pearls. It's full of wonderful research, terrific humor (Francois asks the artist painting his son's portrait to improve the chin - "I failed there"; and my favorite moment, when modern Guitry, who is enthusiastically relating the entire story to his bemused wife, picks up a small book, then brushes it away for a huge one with a throw-away line: "Those always confuse me.").
Have just watched two of the earlier videos and am elated to be able to have so many to choose from whenever a mental health retreat from the US overwhelming political angst is necessitated. I particularly enjoyed the trumpian description of Henry VIII: "He is frequently very good at turning feelings into facts and getting what he wants."
Great story, the image you put in my mind of the crown being hammered flat while the thieves started to saw the sceptre in half will stay with me. Looking forward to the story of Edward l now 😊
When my daughter was a toddler, nearly 20 years ago, I had some flash cards of the monarchs. I confess, I taught her to say, "Bad King John!". Babble on about anything, historical. Ha!
Yes more of Demon Spawn Edward !!! And maybe some more historical thieves ?? Pirates ??? I’d love to hear about Sir Frances Drake !! Thanks for another very entertaining video !!!
The story about accepting bribes to let people try on the various crown jewels remind me of a another story. When Shelly Winters won the Academy Award for her role in "Anne Frank" she gave it to the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam. Although no one tried to steal the Oscar, it was eventually put into a sealed case because the gold patina was being worn away as everyone visiting the museum would pick up the Oscar and deliver an acceptance speech. Not exactly hammering the royal crown flat, but a funny story.
Another great video! Poor man, so, well, easily taken advantage of. Of course if he wasn't giving people access he'd have been safer, but still! And I now NEED that story about Edward I's lineage! 😆 I also wanted to add, I love the outro music. I know some people don't, and that's fine, but I love it. It's cheerful and bouncy. I always hum along. 😅 It may not make me think of... the historical era, specifically, but it is a positive connection I have to the channel. Keep up the great work!
Would love to see an episode about Civil War Oxford, whence the King, Queen, & court took up residence. We're the Crown jewels taken there? Parliament met at the Bodliean Library, the Royal Mint was in operation, there are earthen fortifications in the college gardens. The Queen lived at one college; the Royal mistress lived at another. The court ladies were quartered on the college fellows, to their dismay.
One rumor tells that Charles II was so indulgent to Tom Blood because the gems in the crown had been sold off and replaced with glass, and the King feared exposure of his grubby fiscal expedients.
I suppose that one could consider the Kohinoor diamond a spoil of war(or whatever you'd like to call it). But as we become aware of past wrongs, wouldn't returning the diamond to India be the right thing to do?
Dr. Kat, Please Tally my Hand in assessing The story of "The King - Come From Devils" .. As with all of your telling of history - I could listen endlessly. "}
Wouldn’t you like to of been a fly on the wall so that you could’ve heard the conversation between Thomas Blood in the King...What did he say to convince him, to pardon him, very interesting.
My guess is that he did a very thorough security assessment on threats to the King's jewels and person. That would normally be capital T Treason - but he had nothing to lose at that point. It was go big or Get Stretched Over A Door. The King realises what a great resource he has, so elects to keep him close and keep him happy.
Another amazing video Dr. Kat! I do wonder what happened in that room for Thomas Blood to be pardoned. I know you said it was a private meeting, and they didn't share the details. But are there any theories from historians what could possibly have prompted such an outcome? It seems in complete opposition to what could normally have been expected at the time. Would love to hear more about the descendant from demons, of course!
Speaking of the Civil Wars...I /may/ be related to Maj-Gen. John Lambert (he's in our tree but the son he's listed as being our connection isn't listed anywhere else official so there's a puzzle) and I would love to hear more about him and his wife's role in all of that and just the Wars in general
Great video! Can yo do a video on the history/meaning or significance of the pieces comprising the crown jewels? I found the backstory of the India diamond on the Queen Mother's crown really intersting.
Please Dr Kate ,I want you to talk about Spanish and other European history ....your channel is a very intersting reference about history.so try to give us more and more about other .
I love your videos! Have you ever done a video on Margaret Beaufort/Beauford????? Mother of Henery the 7,I believe.....I'd love to see a long video on her.
I saw a clip from Horrible Histories that said Charles II “brought back the Crown Jewels” after the monarchy restoration. Where were they? Maybe you covered it in this clip. I’m having trouble playing it (You Tube has been glitchy tonight). Nevermind: I see you covered it. Thanks!
Dr. Kat-What is the title of the book that is on your top shelf over your left shoulder? It has an off white jacket and an illustration of a man in a hat. I am so drawn to it! Thank you!
I'd like to hear about the coronation throne and the stolen stone. I remember something about it but not enough to even remember the name of the stone. I could look it all up, but I'd love to hear your take on it and any other tidbits you could dig up.
