Grapevine Health web site, www.grapevinehealth.com/ and RU-vid channel, / grapevinehealth Thank you very much for coming on again Lisa, and for your great work
I am an ICU nurse in the states. I loved this so much. Health disparities have always struck me. I do what I can, but the ICU is too late. I will share this on my social media. Likewise, I agree with Dr. Lisa that it is challenging for many of us in healthcare to practice what we preach especially with stress and neglecting ourselves. I have now lost 125 pounds and am finally overweight at 200 pounds. My desire is to help many other healthcare folks to do the same as well as others I meet.
Never trust a mechanic with a poorly running car. He may be super sweet and kind but … Never trust a ______ that cannot manage their own ________. Seems reasonable for any profession.
I'm an actor and have worked as a standardized patient teaching doctors how to communicate. My number one piece of feedback always was "sometimes people don't need an answer, they just need to know you've listened to the question."
Thank you Dr. Lisa; another great educator and communicator! "The messengers matter." It's so important for everyone to have at least a basic understanding of health and our own bodies.
I am German/Hispanic, I look white, my husband is Asian, we have both been talked down to many times by health care providers. We have had a long journey searching out doctors willing to listen to us and not treat us as they are gods and we shouldn't ask questions. Sad. I am sure it affects some cultures more than others but I do think there is more than a color they see, it is a "them" and "Us" for some in the medical community. I'm just sad about it. To anyone mistreated by doctors I hope you never give up asking questions about your care. We should ask questions and not be mistreated for it.
I'm white. I can tell you most all my experiences have been awful. I don't even want to go in anymore. Condescending, and they can't even help, listen it investigate the situation. Sub-par medical treatment- I'm a full time worker, but still under poverty, their lies one of the biggest issues.
@@crembruley2694 Im Coloured in my country, South Africa. when I get that kind of Awful treatment, i remind them, I pay you for the service, You are not doing me a favour. When I go to a Public (government entity) and I dont get the desired Respect or service, I remind the staff there, this is no favour. You are paid with the tax payers money. You are a Public Servant.
John, Lisa has been performing good intra- community awareness for a few years. She moved from a comfortable neighborhood to the center of need, and now returning to her roots. Thanks for an excellent broadcast.
Another great guest, Dr. John! Kudos to you, Dr. Lisa, for educating the disparaged areas in this country. Lack of adequate healthcare...including lack of health care education.. has been the largest pandemic in this country for decades, if not since its inception. It has only gotten worse.
John I am a Canadian ICU nurse (27 years experience), I love and watch your channel regularly. Thank you both, great conversation. My (and many others ) diminishing confidence in the current health care paradigm has gotten worse since the pandemic. Institutions like Grapevine health can go a long way in restoring that confidence. Great work Lisa.
Young Dr. John, I am your regular listner. I am proud of your knowledge and expertise about nutrition. I got effective information from you and shared with my students. I got very positive feedback about your studies. God bless you and wish you more pleasures of life with your family and friends. Thanks. Azam
Wonderful interview with Dr. Fitzpatrick. And as a white American, I can also attest to the lack of trust for the government agencies tasked with public health- the CDC & FDA. With doctors, I have felt the same "hand on the door" rushed appointments with my 3 different internists over last 25 yrs.- 2 women, 1 man. In January, I switched to a family physician and he is informed, a good listener & wonderful in general! I recommend switching doctors if you don't have a good connection.
When the pandemic hit I was a 56 year old unfit 23 stone 5lb man, I found John Campbell and he's completely changed my life, I went on a diet changed the way I eat I take all my vitamins especially d3, zinc, selenium,I forgot to mention I suffer from severe chronic asthma and have always been on copious amounts of steroids so things are hard for me but and it's a huge BUT, I started walking my new puppy small walks at first and started to feel a bit better I'll jump to now as it's a long long story, I now weigh 9 stone 0lb so I've lost over 14 stone in 15 months, I now walk 12 miles every single day with my now extremely fit dog 😊, I feel 25 again and cannot sit still for 2 minutes , I always wanted to get fit but never thought i had a good enough excuse but John changed all that , if you'd like to hear my full extremely sad but heartwarming story over the pandemic please feel free to ask, if I can do it then anyone can do it, just try it's so rewarding, my love to John Campbell and love to everyone out there. 💖
Wow, Lisa is an amazing women. She is so aware of the bigger picture and just so well informed on what needs to be done. Best Wishes from Australia... What a credit to medicine she is.
I love the philosophy behind the Grapevine Health. Your work keeping people healthy and being responsive to the needs of the community is amazing Dr Lisa. Great interview once more Dr John. Thank you.
Brilliant insight and actions, just what is needed and easy to spread with the internet... just need someone like Lisa to coordinate it all. Good Luck Doc Lisa x
What a wonderful conversation. Dr. Fitzpatrick....we need more doctors like you!!! Thank you Dr. Campbell for bringing us this intelligent human being.
Lisa you are an amazing human being and one powerful woman. You convey your message so clearly. I can only imagine the good work you are and will continue to achieve.
She is refreshing. Thank you for having her on. I agree that fresh fruits and vegetables are hard to get in these food deserts. Hopefully she can shed light on this because it's such a problem in rural areas. Food is medicine as Wewafwa says.
Appreciated hearing this. If people are trying to survive violence and poverty, there’s not a lot of bandwidth left for negotiating a healthcare system that’s disrespectful, and hard to get to.
Dr Fitzpatrick, what a great communicator you are! I think people are very capable of understanding things when they are presented in a way that meets each individual where they are. You are a gifted professional that can do that. Thank you for sharing you time and knowledge. Thank you Dr Campbell for this important conversation.👍👏👏
We ( and I bet I speak for many) in the USA are seeking unbiased , data based , non- political info we can mull over in OUR OWN minds and figure out where we stand in relation to the virus. THIS, I feel , we get from you, Dr John. I know I personally have had validation of my own feelings that NO ONE here in the states would address. Thank U so much for your honesty and for SHARING with us self-educated laypersons your nursing skills and personal medical experiences . ♥️
Dr. Lisa, i love you. My sainted wife died of chronic obesity. I told her doctors later, "maybe if you had treated it like it was a deadly emergency, put her on a gurney and required her to lose weight, maybe she would have lived." All they wanted to do was to treat the pain.
Thanks for all your hard work doc. You’ve been a constant uploader throughout all of this and it’s great to see your channel blowing up. 2M subs even! Congrats
Thank you Dr. Fitzpatrick, for putting your tremendous energy and intelligence into reaching communities that need you so! Such a great communicator . . . Really hope this Campbell interview will help build your presence somehow.
Thank you both and she is right about admitting everything isn't known about this disease. I wish you both talked about therapeutics and the politicization of them. This is another huge reason for mistrust. And I would have to disagree that the drug problem is more visible because it has struck the higher income level of people. It has been a problem that way for many, many years. I can say that anecdotally because I worked in an inner-city large level II trauma hospital and it was a problem then among all colors, all incomes, all backgrounds. All in all, a great and informative conversation and God bless you both.
Love this Dr Fitzpatrick. Bless you for promoting health literacy. Not only preventative, but also navigating access to health care for individuals in need.
Again, Dr Lisa, an amazing simple to understand Doctor. she is willing to adamite and/or question what is understood and/or what is not. What an informative clip. Thank you.
I love her face when she knows John wants her to agree with him and she doesn't. Thank you for saying that we don't know all the answers and for being honest Dr. Lisa.
I am a Public Health Nurse in Canada who originated in the UK. I am grateful to Dr Lisa. I have noticed that people have lost confidence in Government Agencies. We have been trying to educate people in the community for years but our services have been gradually withdrawn from providing education in schools and our community clinics. We used to have a much more visible relationship in the community with our education and promotion work but this has been taken away from us, so now we just provide vaccine and little else.
Eat a variety of fresh foods Some vitamins are water soluble and others are oil soluble Have meals cooked in healthy oil such as olive oil and meals cooked in water. Don't throw out the water as it contains the water soluble nutrients. Cooking alters the structure of foods Therefore it's important to eat both cooked and raw food I'm 73 and I'm not on any medication I enjoy excellent health
A good discussion. I worked with rural poor (many Hispanic farm workers) and in the IHS (Native American hospitals) and we saw the same problem with trust and communication. As for the doctors lack of time in the USA: it's because preventive medicine and modern billing means you have to document everything, whereas when I was first in practice, you could just make a note on the chart ("cold... penicillin... and leave out the half hour discusison about the family's real problems because it was too personal to put in the chart).
@Nancy Reyes Check out the book Overcoming the Covid Darkness by doctors Fareed & Tyson at Imperial Valley CA Urgent Care . Also their local paper Desert Review on the web & YT. Mostly high risk Mexican American patients. Fareed (77) also volunteers in Mexico. Tyson runs the clinic. Fareed does Telmed for a donation. He also works in a nursing home.
I really loved this interview...just another thank you Dr Campbell from California for all the good information you provide and the comfort it brings. :) Gratefully... Dlynn
We used to buy, or borrow little books for kids to read about a kid going to the doctor/hospital. It taught the kids where the organs were, and what they do. Start with both parents working, one parent households. Hard to find the time, but it has to be done. Teaching kids starts at home, and continues in school, as I remember it. She is wonderful... speaks in a measured way to get to everyone. I love that she recognizes that some people have no idea even the basics of the human body, so how do you impress that a vaccine is good? I decided to get the vaccines in spite of the possible side effects... It's gambling really. It's the risk vs. benefits issue. So far, so good.
@@KAS1JM ... this is a big problem right now. We all have to make our own decision, and should be able to without being shunned by others who feel differently.
Dr. John you are irreplaceable!!! Thank you very much for all you do!!! You and Lisa have vital information to give the world and I for one can not express how much i appreciate you!!!!
God bless her, you see the compassion in her eyes and smile. I do agree with Dr. John that the miracle of the MNRA vaccines remains to be seen when the long terms effects are fully known.
Yes! When I married my husband and cooked real food he dropped 20 pounds in 3 months, became lean and muscular without trying. Just eating real food cooked at home and normal exercise from home and lawn maintenance and walking at parks. I taught him how to read food ingredient labels and showed him how much chemicals are in processed food.
Yes, that is also what I commented. There are so many things in the produce section that I have no idea about. Thanks to RU-vid, I am learning to cook better. Less processed food. I have ulcerative colitis and my scope was better this year because I'm eating better.
32:22 "We're treating people as communities, not as individuals" "People don't trust because they know that what is true for Lisa is not necessarily what's true for John, and yet John and Lisa are being treated in exactly the same way" YES! That is a BIG part of the problem for me. And then when people's bodies have adverse reactions, they are being gaslighted by the medical community. It makes me not "tRuSt tHe sCiEncE" AT ALL!
Dr. Fitzpatrick is a treasure! She mentioned so many things that have been issues for me in dealing with doctors. You & she should both should be proud of your willingness & ability to listen to patients! That is how you build trust.
Terrific interview Drs C and Fitzpatrick. The work that Dr. Fitzpatrick is doing is phenomenal, and the challenges she’s faced are real, in my experience and those of my colleagues. Once I recruited for pharmaceutical trials. I learned more about Tuskegee than I ever cared to explain to prospective subjects and their families. Later i worked in a genetics clinical trial and met with very rural, probands of schizophrenics. Healthcare providers have a “ long row to Hoe” to treat and teach healthcare fundamentals to so many victims of healthcaremdisoarity. Many providers see it as a 3rd world issue, but fail to recognize the same is true of their own families, neighbors and friends. Worse yet, they fail to recognize their own contribution in our communities in the US. Thanks again, Monica.
I would give Dr. Fitzpatrick 10 thumbs up if I could! This woman is an amazing and brilliant human being. Well worth the listen, I'm glad she made another visit to the channel.
The worst part of Covid is the new lack of trust that we as patients have in the medical field. Hopefully more people like these 2 will become involved.
@@dragonflyoracle4679 exactly. When doctors started hysterically telling people to “stay home! We aren’t seeing possible Covid patients!” that told me all I needed to know about those particular doctors.
@@calliopec544 the thing is,if people have/had covid, it is much the same as having flu. The treatment is mostly simply for the symptoms, the only thing that can fight the infection is our own bodies. Unless the symptoms are very serious, such as heart/breathing problems, the Dr's can't do anything, so all that's going to happen if you are seen by one is that you might give THEM the infection, flu/covid,or give it to other people at the hospital/surgery. If the symptoms are slight, a temperature/fever, a headache, feeling sick, having the runs, there are drugs you can buy at a pharmacy (or someone can buy for you),that will treat these really cheaply. Those people who are /were really sick with covid, are /were seen and treated by Dr's,just as they should be. But l know that ,as is said in the video, a lot of this hasn't been explained well
@@helentee9863 my husband needed to go to the doctor to be checked for a kidney stone! But since we were in a Covid spike at the moment the doc freaked and told him to go to the ER if it got unbearable. Mess like that is inexcusable. If someone doesn’t want to potentially be around sick people they probably shouldn’t go into healthcare as a profession!
I enjoyed listening! Health disparities are real here in the US. It is a real problem! We do what we can to get the word out on immunizations. We do what we can about teaching young people of color about Hypertension and the real risks with not caring properly for yourself. Thank You Dr. Lisa Fitzpatrick! You are a breath of fresh air.
One of the challenges of understanding health insurance in the US is as soon as we think we understand how our insurance works, the industry changes the languages, the rules.
American here! The politicians made a bad situation with the lack of health education worse! People are more resistant to learn because of the distrust. On the other hand, if you do some health research on your own, you’re criticized for not being a health professional. Such a mess! I just take my vitamins, and try to stay healthy by making reasonable health decisions.
Thank you Dr. Lisa for what you are doing to increase medical literacy! About relationships with our doctors, our family has chosen direct primary care, and it is amazing to have a relationship where our doctor knows our family, spends time in appointments, listens, gives us resources to learn about health issues, and is available for questions.
OMG...Dr. Lisa Fitzpatrick...she gets it. And totally understands where the lack of trust comes from! Do you know, I became sensitized to the arrogance of science at Science Based Medicine's "blog".They tend to call people idiots if they don't have the understanding of science that they received at University, but people just shrug them off because they never learned anything at University about understanding people and how to relate. Thanks to both you Docs. You seem to love the common man/woman...and begin with that. It opens up our minds to what you have to say. AND...you don't call us names!
What Dr Fitz is saying is so right and so true. It's very important to trust your healthcare. They have to earn it back. We trust our physicians, who are also victims. The bureaucracies, not so much!
I don't even trust my physician anymore, they were too dependent on the information from the CDC and did not do their own research. I would love to have a suggestion here in the states in eastern pennsylvania
The honest truth ALWAYS makes more sense and a good buff! Thank you both for your EXCELLENT work and help in this time when the pool of lies and the unknown is getting deeper everyday.
I'm guilty of too much sitting in front of the computer and not getting back into the regular workout schedule I had before I started school myself...Dr Fitzpatrick provided a lot of inspiration--we should be partnering up with each other and encouraging each other to get more fit and healthy.
Thank you Dr Lisa and (and Dr John, as always). I find I get treated like a fool often. Superiority. Ive got one old bloke who listens and talks so much that he’s always an hour late, and everyone has accepted this for the last 25 years, lol. Fabulous. but he’s like 90 - not - out and I won’t have him forever. Anyways, you’ve put a bomb under me arse to go meet some doctors so I’ll have one when he retires. Thanks everyone
🙋🏽♀️Thank you Dr. Fitzpatrick. I love your conceptualization of the issues, and the potential resolution to them. I as a healthcare provider in the US, understand the complexity of the system. Unfortunately I am also a patient, and get to see the other side of the fence. You are spot on about the lack of “being seen, and heard” by the physician. I would be my pleasure to work with you
Wonderful to have Dr Lisa Fitzpatrick back on with Dr JC! Thank you both for another enlightening conversation. Would love to hear her thoughts on how the high rates of vitamin D deficiency potentially contribute to the health outcomes of the communities that she serves. I have heard that vitamin D deficiency is associated with heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and certain cancers and that 4 out of 5 of African Americans are vitamin D deficient. Does she see a causal relationship between the higher vitamin D deficiency and the higher rates of these chronic diseases in these communities and how does this fit into her vision of health literacy and information delivery?
Wonderful Dr. Lisa. You get the real problems, offer realistic solutions to improve and set the example of getting on with it. All respectfully and patiently. There should be legions following and emulating you.
