The onset of May is always exciting for our Karunbithil family, our extended family, and friends as it is Shibira time. Stalwarts like Sri. Lalgudi G Jayaraman, Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna, Sri. Umayalapuram Sivaraman, Sri. M Chandrasekharan, V V Subrahmanyam, Sri. T V Gopalakrishnan and many current day stellar musicians have graced our Shibira and have given us innumerable memorable moments to cherish. This year would have marked the 21st anniversary of our Shibira. We are unable to host the Shibira this year due to the present crisis. Our heartfelt thanks goes to one and all who have made the Shibira a grand success always. Please watch this space as we reminisce these memories of the past Shibiras for the next few days. The spirit and energy of the unique Karunbithil Shibiram cannot be destroyed by the pandemic, and this concert that you are sharing with us today is proof of that. I hope you continue to share the riches of the previous Shibirams as a mark not only of what you are unable to do today, but also of what you are still able to do in this time of crisis. And nobody to express this spirit better than this unique, inimitable and always-smiling musician!

Each time I listen him singing the same song it’s a different experience ..it’s unimaginable for other musicians to sing like him ..really a genius! The children there are very privileged..sad that he is not present with us anymore..hope the children are learning his compositions and preserving his music!

Blessed are the children to listen to the Gandharva in person. Vithal Sir, you are really great. Building a new generation of musicians is the best return a musician of your stature can give to the society. Hats off to you. I wanted to come and see 2020 shibira. Hope my wish gets fulfilled in 2021.

The thought that Balamurali was doing all this for an audience of the youngest music learners imaginable, and that too, drawn from a small village in Karnataka, is unimaginably touching. The uplifting spirit of the great Dasa tradition of this state in S India is truly alive in this Shibira: the laughter and the obvious immersion of the kids in Balamurali's supreme performance are a fulfillment of their vision of an inclusive and truly free society. May the Shibira take new life from this fallow year and come back with greater force and verve next year!

"Bala" Murali always remained a Bala as far as music was concerned. He just played with swaras, taalas and Raagas and stretched his God-given extraordinary voice to limits that ordinary human beings can't reach. Music just flowed from within and perfectly without any effort on his part!! That's why at 82 he hasn't lost any of his childish curiosity for music!!
