Dr. Padma Subramaniam is a legendary classical dancer who specialized in the form of Bharatanatyam, well known for displaying her talents. A dancer, Singer ,music composer, choreographer, teacher, writer, and research Scholar , Padma has indeed managed to do justice in each of these Fields . Padma grew up in an environment where both her parents were artistically inclined. Her father K. Subrahmanyam was an internationally reputed film director, freedom fighter and a parental personality in the cultural field while her mother Meenakshi Subrahmanyam was a Music Composer and a lyricist in Sanskrit and Tamil. Over the years Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam has given several performances in India and abroad that have got audiences enwrapped in her Dance recitals. She displays immense perfection with regard to her body movements and hand gesticulation for many of her original musical scores that makes her an enthralling sight to watch on stage. Backed by years of experience, she has imparted her knowledge to many dancers through various forms. She has held several workshops, addressed many public speeches, published more than a few books and journals and as well as undertaken extensive research. This multi-faceted personality has been the main subject for many short films and documentaries made in countries such as Japan, Australia and Russia.
Dr. Padma Subramanyam has many national awards and honors to her credit including 'Padma Bhushan', 'Padmashri', 'Sangeet Natak Akademi Award', 'Kalaimamani Award' from Govt. of Tamilnadu, 'Kalidas Samman' from Govt. of Madhya Pradesh, 'Nada Brahmam' , 'Bharata Sastra Rakshamani' and so on. She has also received the prestigious 'Fukuoka Asian Cultural Prize' from Japan for her contribution to development and harmony in Asia. She is the founder of Bharatha Ilango Foundation and Pan Asian Cultural Centre .
