One of our exchange student from Europe who attended Dr Mzileni's module says he is the best lecturer they have ever had. They wish when they go back to Europe they would be taught by similar scholars. He evoked something in them. They are grateful.

Dr Mzileni is the kind of leaders we must not shove under the carpet. Let's preserve our intelligentsia. Please stay visible, Prof. I'm conferring the title to him today. Any responsible academic institutions must take note. Actually they are late not to have noticed that we have such a caliber for an academic.

I read Dr Mzileni's columns in The Sowetan Newspaper. His description of our condition is raw, crisp and clear, no sugarcoating. Such truths, the enemy and the dishonest, cannot stand. A few years back, he would have been "removed from society ". We've seen it happen to Bantu Biko, etc. Sadly, he was stopped from writing for the paper and persecuted by his varsity. Ume njalo Nyawose. Bayede

10 minutes into the conversation and I can totally relate with Dr. Mzileni’s sentiments as a UFS Alumni and former employee. What a conversation. These are conversations that we should have openly and without fear and prejudice. Thank you Dr. Mzileni for opening up about your experiences at that institution. I have been taught by academics at that institution who are white yet they don’t have even a postgraduate diploma, but in turn a black academic is expected to have a Doctorate/Phd in the discipline

I am at Yale University listening to Dr. Mzileni and so proud of being South African and from Bloemfontein. Our children are miseducated and the University of the Free State. They are not allowed to be critical thinkers at a learning institution, yet Dr. Mzileni the beacon of hope has left them intellectually bankrupt. Wherever you will end Dr. Mzileni do not give up. Our communities will never survive this onslaught brutality. This is an animal farm episode and we cannot tolerate it coloniality. He has living affection for empowering and relating with students to the extent that he can drag the meeting just to educate even the most hostile and antagonizing foe would feel the embrace of this product of the NMU. The guest Dr Pedro is the product of Nelson Mandela University who began as a student and occupied the leading roles in the students government development. As a coloured male during my internship at UFS, I experienced similar situations and disciplinary enquiries. What was most scathing, and an experiential trauma that still lives with me, is that 95% of my evaluators/supervisors were white females. I wrote a scathing quarterly portfolio report, where I highlighted my experiences and the lack of cultural sensitivity. Swept under the rug. I was treated slightly better but noone spoke about it. The Department I studied under, again, mostly white. I am the 1st and only coloured Masters postgraduate in the history of that specific Department. It is an ambition of mine to be a lecturer in that Department, albeit it a challenging given that there is currently 1 black Dr., the HOD is coloured, and the rest of the Academic staff are white.

This is a refreshing conversation. The issues discussed from 50:40 concerning the lack of support from colleagues draws my attention. There could be numerous reasons causing the lack support. Among others is that some positions in academia are held by non-South Africans who are not here to question the status quo, another reason is that there is high unemployment in the country and everybody fear unemployment.

Heal? Black people? dont make me laugh. The ANC and EFF have been perpetuating black peoples inferiority complex and for the longest time have never taught them to evolve and move beyond the past, but to always be there at every turn scratching at old wounds and refusing to allow the people to move beyond always being told they will only be victims, oppressed by someone. And every time other races so much as insults a black man, the ANC and especially the EFF is there to point and say "see, see we told you these people are racits" every fking time. The rest of the world is so fking tired of these tantrums and this self obsession and attacking of other people because you have nothing better to do. Everyone else is making a success of themselves and here is the majority, still assuming everyone is scheming against them. And that is exactly what the EFF wants people to believe. Nobody cares let me tell you that much, and the reason people attack the EFF and ANC is for the reason that they will only bring stagnation and more racialism.

And your method is to be more racist. Because the last time i checked nobody used the race card except black people, nobody stands on podiums threatening people because of the colour of their skin except black people, nobody except black people constantly racialise everything like that is the deciding factor in everything in life, there are over a 100 different affirmative actions laws against minorities to "protect black people" from them, the most in history, ever. If anything we need to defeat blackness and this black obsession, as you can clearly see, your people are getting nowhere while minorities are still more successful across the board in spite of the government's constant scapegoating of them. Your like children who think you can tell the adults how the world works, you have no history of successful nation building, and you blame your lack of skills on others anyway while having done nothing in 30 year to evolve as a people. You hate others but you still rely on them to change your diapers.

Dr Siz, I've listened to a few of your interviews and I think this is one where "holding the space" is more important than interjection. There were a few moments in the interview where I was eagerly awaiting for the story to unfold and as it was unfolding, you interjected with a remark or a question which has some nuanced effect on how the narrative continued. Perhaps a more balanced approach of leveraging on your guest's strengths is needed. In some cases "holding the space" is creating safety, in some cases, it is nudging. Great as always, thanks.

My take home from this thought provoking conversation is that we have failed as Africans and we have something urgent to fix...and it's long overdue. So the behaviour of the likes of said institution and some whites who are stubborn and reluctant to change is not new. Why aren't black people pooling resources to build their own institutions of higher learning? We have so many gifted African academics who would thrive in Afro-centric institutions...so what's so difficult there? We don't even need to ask Robert Gumede and Patrice Motsepe as Julius once said...but really now, let's start looking at that as a possible solution.

“Being silent is advancing the status quo” This is so accurate Dr. Mzileni, your sentiments resonate with those of Sihle Bolani in her book where she was voicing out her experiences of racism, injustice and inequality at a corporate institution.

I have a swam of stories from ex-academic staff from UFS. I cannot be wrong - because I myself, being Black has been part of UFS since 2005. Between 2021 - 2022, I had to fight for (1) fair salary parity via my attorneys and for lecturing without even (2) office cubicle/room allocated to me, until I opted for resignation. Students, adult as they are - told me they see I am ill-treated, silent and resilient to be a productive lecturer. Employees@UFS have not a SINGLE bone of solidarity - they watch you battle solo, or they themselves succumb to stroke, blood pressure, resignation etc putting a hardy face to please elitist structural authority solidified by UFS subtle apartheid institutional culture. I am free now - running towards opening my own genuine Afrocentric university#ZAWADI NPC.

To think that even academics are targeted when they tell their truth is astounding. This is how we feel in the private sector, we are intimidated into submission. Even when we see something wrong we can't say it because of fear of victimization. It's like being on a chokehold.

Its sad that 30 years after democracy people still experience the legacy of apartheid on a daily basis. It means we must have started badly . However not too late to reverse those apartheid monsters!!!

That is daily bread of working in private sector. It’s explicit that we are not wanted, we are just being tolerated.

Dr Pedro Mzileni, We are POORER at UFS With Your December 29, 2023 Resignation! Your short stay at UFS was Decolonizing Refreshingly Honest. We, _African_ South African Black Scholars in the South African Universities Have Been Pushed Under the Bus by _ANC Government, and it's Higher Education Ministry Leadership. Especially those Black South African Academics Whose scholarship and teaching are on Decolonization on the Curriculum in the University. 30 Years We Must Have A Change in 2024!!! RESPECT RESPECT RESPECT DR PEDRO MZILENI RESPECT RESPECT RESPECT RESPECT RESPECT RESPECT RESPECT RESPECT RESPECT RESPECT RESPECT. Great interview but I wish the end part of it where he put analysis on current social structure should have been given most of the time . I wish to hear him talk about politics, region and socio-economic
