Let me answer this question. The USPHS is one of the oldest service branches that has served our country for decades. They have about 6,000 officers in varying positions such as physicians/nurses/epidemiologists/biostatisticians etc. They wear the uniform because they serve worldwide and at home fighting public health issues. It’s similar to the Army/Navy direct commission program. A lot of those officers are doctors/dentists etc. The military just gives them rank for their professional credentials. I have a MPH (Masters in Public Health)
