As your past is tragic you cannot save your father. You must know that if you travel back to save your dad from the near future (present for you) you will of course save him but you will also create a time paradox loop. This means the initial reason you wished to travel back no longer exists meaning you DON'T travel back meaning he remains deceased. It's a confusing concept but it will happen. Even though time travel will not happen anytime soon(hopefully it does) Have a good day :)

I love the fact that he was inspired in his career by (1) the love and tragic loss of his father at an early age, and (2) his incessant reading of science fiction, which together resulted in (3) a life-long, focused quest to see his father again and to possibly save his life. Insane but touching story. I sincerely hope he succeeds.

I derped slightly reading your reply so let me clarify - Time is simply the human tendency to ascribe significance to the constant flux which surrounds us, which is why I used "rate of vibration of particles" as the example, since that is one of the most basic forms of that flux. Rate is simply a word I use to express the constant movements in the universe, it is not in fact a tautology since of course time is a measurement of itself, ie our measurement of change is based on change.

I would love to go back to mid 70's and 80's and see my family again-my grandparents, my stepdad, my uncle and other people that I have known. Plus drop my airhead 15 year old niece to the era to see what's like in my childhood years....maybe she could learn how earn things by doing chores. To show her that my family didn't have much but made the best of it thru the years. I would not go back to the future 2020

When I was 3 I distinctly remember having an older brother in his 30s or so despite my parents being in their early 20s. I thought it was odd especially since his name was John and mine is Johnny. He took me to a carnival where we saw 3d movies and real life dinosaurs and such. We would go on these amazing trips and I distinctly remember everyone dressing differently and the entire atmosphere being very surreal. When my father had his first suicide attempt my "brother" appeared and talked him off the literal ledge. Then I never saw him again. I asked where he was a few weeks later and my parents got very angry and told me I was imagining things. I never understood why they got so angry... Then I remember a tattoo on his arm. Very distinct of a poppy with thorns. I ended up getting the same tattoo about 3 years ago. And get this. Thid tat wasnt planned. It was a free style tattoo. I basically gave the artist a general idea and thats what he made. My father only spoke of it ONCE. He told me that in the future Id be a governor. After leading troops in some kind of war that had to do with people being spied on using machines, and even being killed and arrested for no reason. He explained this in great detail and said something about how I would come back to tell him all of this one day but I was too young to understand. I was 9 when he explained that. I brought it up once, as a teen and he said again, that I imagined it. Which was off because I didnt ever have a history of imagining nonsense things. Even my childhood imaginary friend was quite boring. Only that subject was I told i imagined shit. But when I was a teen i saw some scars on my dads chest while we were changing in the gym locker room. Apparently he was attacked and stabbed by a gang of black men, who had robbed him. They targeted my father mistaking him for an arab (this was in post 9/11 america, the earlier days) and my dad was quite swarthy and tall. So this was a racially charged attack. And he was very touchy on the subject and didnt want to tell me the details. Understood. But then he mace a remark where he said "im gonna be dead in 5 years anyway, u need to start worrying about urself and how ur gonna survive cuz the world is going to get a lot harder, dont let other peoples problems slow u down." 5 years later he died..... I never saw "John" again, except when I looked in the mirror recently I started getting this weird feeling that this was another person Ive known. Like my own image was me but also it belongs to someone else. Idk very weird stuff. I never tried to think much about it cuz everytime i lay out the facts of what I remember I immidiately get told Im crazy or that Im ripping off the terminator movies. But I swear to god, John was me. He came back to do what u said ud do if u had a time machine. To visit his family in the early 90s and to take his younger self back to his present day to see 3d movies and animtronic dinosaur exhibits (which are the hottest musuem attractions right now mind u) Ive never had an urge to train militias or run for political office tho. Maybe he changed the future by revealing it? A risk he told my parents which is why they were so touchy and secretive? ..idk. But it was really weird. An experience I know I had but Im told never happened.

Ironically the HG wells time machine often pictured with a rotating disc would probably work somewhat if the disk was made out of an offset sort of singularity metal, and as it rotated you would brush against the effect of its mass on space time. Probably only send you into the future tho. Only way to go into the past would be build a second machine that can send you over to an inverse reality where time works the other way, then spin your machine up so you travel faster into the future (Which in that realities case would be the past). Then cross back over. My head hurts.

FYI Ron's father fought in World War II with the all black 92nd Infantry Division in the Italian campaign. He served in the Army around 1943-1945 before becoming a TV repairman

A scientist actually found a theory which gives us a framework to start to reconcile relativity and quantum mechanics--it discarded time. The Wheeler-DeWitt equation ignores time--it is the closest we've come to reconciling the separate phenomenon observed that exist but currently exist in conflict. Obviously we're missing something if two phenomenon exist but contradict each other, over 60 years of experiments. Many scientists now believe that the solution is that time isn't real.

I'm fairly certain that inventing a way to cleanly and efficiently harvest energy is a higher priority than making smaller batteries, which in fact require precious metals which are becoming scarce and require energy to extract in the first place.

He has the power, he's the key to inventing time machine to travel back in time in the past or travel through time in the future. Sometimes I need him I can use him wisely. Because I need his help to send me back in time at the events when my father passed away from massive heart attack on Monday, June 26, 2017 at 17:47 Hours in my home state of California. I couldn't let my father died it wasn't my fault. I should protect him from dying, I should let him live forever at the moment of time. Otherwise I go travel back in the other time at the events when my house burned down to the ground on Friday, April 13, 2007 at 22:45 Hours in my old house it used to be adult school was built in 1907. It's very nice old house I here. I wanted to relive, rewrite and restart history. I'm really want to go back in time to alter history for my school year of timeline about K-12th grade. it took me about 13 years to change course of history for my memories diverted the timeflow. I like to get my driver's license when I go back in time at Summer 2003 after my high school graduation. What I teach my other self to learn how to drive? Because I have never drove at the first place, at the first time. So my other self passed the driving test. I would remember I got my driver's license for the last place, for the last time. I should finally to get a date to fallen love, to get married and to have children. My timeline memories has finally altered. My time travel stories is far from over. The End.

What I'm saying is that entropy exists, but time is a man-made idea to explain certain things about reality. However, as relativity etc demonstrates, time is a very strange concept, and when you investigate it further it is clear that it in fact does not exist. Particles vibrate at certain rates, causing entropy to change at varying rates, and this is what we call time but what people think of as time does not actually exist. There are no seconds, minutes, hours, days, months or years in reality

It's funny what motivates you in time travel ! A on my birthday on the end of 2014 my mom passed while being in my care under hospice . I was not ready for this either ! My life livitated around hers . While I was on vacation out of the state . She fell and broke her femur bone . When she woke up from her surgery she was no longer the same . A sort of trauma induced dementia had occured . She no longer knew who I was . Within 2 month a pulmonary embolism had occured collapsed one lung and soon to follow was her other lung . If I had a time machine I'd go back and spend more quality time with her . Fix some things I've done in my life like .take better care of my back so I didn't end up living in pain , or Lose my wife and children . Unfortunately we only get one chance in this life and are stuck living with the consequences. It's sad so my advise to all readers is make sound choices in your life because you will be left with the aftermath . The Grass is never greener for long and make the most of your time with your loved ones .

I had the same EPIPHANY. Only, mine involved "building" the perfect sandwich. The meat to cheese to garnish ratio IS very "time" consuming, so going back in time would allow me to make my sandwich BEFORE I realized I even wanted the sandwich. Now, THAT would be something.

Can anyone tell me what you would call this please : cars are waiting for the traffic lights to change. The que goes right down the road apart from a small section where there's a yellow box due to a junction where a road connects. You don't look as you step out onto a road, you glance to the right and a man on a motor cycle is about to hit you. He's so close you see his eyes through the helmet visor. All of a sudden everything slows down and appears to stop. You are aware times slowing as the people (lots of them) queuing in their cars with their windows rolled down, roar (woah.....) It sounds like a slowed down record playing on a record player moving like a Mexican wave down the que. When everything resumes again the motorcycle has moved back, just far enough for you to see the motorbike approaching. You have just enough time to shift your position thus avoiding being hit. Is this some kind of Time Travel? If not what? As it happened, and happened to me! It was like I was in a trance afterwards. I I was aware of what just happened, and I knew the man on the motorbike had stopped to take his helmet off he'd been sick by the roadside however, I didn't react like you'd imagine a person would. I didn't acknowledge it and just carried on walking home without looking back. I felt so tired and my head felt light and went to bed although I'd just woken up to take my son to School. I still don't have any idea what happened to me that day I've been searching for some time now but can't seem to find the answer. Please help thanks.

Can I go back to the past and change my mistakes? I cheated without knowing... I never mean to do it... I just never took any of my words and actions so seriously that it made me took months to realize it... If I could go back in time and tell my young self to be serious and block the people who dirty talks me... I can have a normal, healthy, and happy relationship with my gf rn... I love her so dearly, and I regret doing all of these stupid mistakes I did... I'm still begging and praying to go back in time... May God bless us all...

Tell me why we can't travel to a moment in reality before the clock moved? Can we or can't we place our present selves to a moment before the physical energy has been imbued into a spring/crank that is releasing the energy through entropy? In other words can we have a do over? The moment in reality when the physical energy happened, can we place our perceived present selves at that moment of reality?

I would go back and never try a first drug. I've been clean for a few years but once you were an addict and no matter how much clean time you have drugs are always on your mind(even indirectly such as dreams). That's how people relapse so easily

Time does not require meaning, just like gravity does not require meaning. If you are looking for philosophy you are in the wrong area. Time is how we tell the difference between events, things just don't happen all at once, there is a before, a now, and a later. These are crucial concepts for survival and understanding the universe. Time can be measured like a dimension of space, to find an event you need to know where (in space) and when (in time).

Also, time isn't just a measurement of entropy. Entropy describes how matter and energy break down, but time explains growth as well.

Entropy is increasing, that doesn't mean that time exists. Time is a specific concept that humans created in order to make sense of the change in the world, caused by entropy, but "time" does not exist in objective reality, unlike entropy. Space-time is a model for how we experience reality, it is not "real" in and of itself, as Einsten himself pointed out; "Time and space are modes by which we think and not conditions in which we live." - Albert Einstein

We don't live in the eternal now because our brains react to its surroundings with a delay. The signal has to travel to our brain and then the brain sends it back to our body. We experience now in the physical "past" that you claim doesn't exist. Maybe we can't measure time but we do learn from experience and retain information. What do we call those moments that our mind holds onto if not the past? I am aware that my question is more philosophical and less scientific; (still) any thoughts?

If you have to be pedantic then temperature is a measurement of the energy contained within a system, generally the air and thus is a measurement of the average rate of vibration of those particles, since that is how the energy is expressed. Time is not a dimension, it is a construct of the human mind. "Space and times are not realities in which we live, but modes by which we think." - Einstein. It is an abstract, but that does not make it a "real" dimension through which we can travel.

Well we haven't succeeded in building one yet, so we can't know if it is possible, and also it may not be possible so, people may not be coming back to the present time for that reason. The only way people would be coming back to our time from the future, is if (and only after) we succeed in making such a machine. So apparently nobody succeeds at making such a device, or any time travel that has occurred has remained secret.

It's not arguing over terms, it's clarification of concepts. Most view time as a linear progression, this is not the case. Everything is happening at once. Time is an illusion, there is only Now. Forever and always.

Fusion would be pretty great, although personally I'd prefer it if we just mastered more renewable sources that don't potentially have the possibility of unleashing near light-speed jets of plasma upon the planet if something goes wrong haha.

I want to go back to 2005 to officially make a hockey team I tried out for, 2006 to go to the college that offered me a cross country and track scholarship, so that I would of re-connected with a girl, asked for her phone #, on dates, a relationship, and maybe even a marriage. As my gut tells me she was probably waiting for me, as she was in the same grade as me in school, and we were to go to the same college in thre same class together.

They built predictive models which fall apart when pushed to the extreme or when considering very large and very tiny or very fast or very small objects. That does not prove (or disprove) time. The biggest factor AGAINST Time is that NO tool exists to measure it. We can measure entropy (decay), and growth, and gravity, with observation and tools that explicitly record those forces. We can not measure time independent of our own minds, however.

Except recent experiments prove you wrong--teams of researchers have separated paired particles and determined that what one does is reflected in the other, despite what we perceive as barriers of time/space between them. It makes it quite clear that the particles do not respect time/space, which certainly suggests that they are human constructs.

That answer is quite simple: NO. But only because this is not my era either. I grew up in the 80's and 90's, so I have found my musical likings, just like you did (and I guess some decades before me). I have learned that every decade brings new musical flows and styles and you can like it or don't like it, that's all fine... But don't you understand that a love for music is highly subjective? That's like hating someone for having butter on his/her sandwich because you will never like butter!?

I didn't say that, don't be silly. But until someone travels into the past, I still don't believe that the past is a concrete reality, it is simply a concept. "Real science" may think that the past exists (it doesn't necessarily, by the way), but that does not mean that the paradigm is correct (in fact the opposite is true). Just because there are theories of time travel does not automatically mean that that is how the universe works, as such.

Saiko is right, though. The pendulum swinging in a clock doesn't actually measure time--it is merely SYNCHRONIZED with our expectation of time passing. Seconds only have meaning because we've invented them. There is no such thing as a "second"--there is no PHYSICAL phenomenon being measured by a second. Entropy does exist, and we've assigned physical valuation to it, which we measure with time. Time is not a physical phenomenon--he is right. Time is a loose measuring tool, an abstract tool.

'Time travel' is the Unicorn in the living room. You have this aspect of Nature where everything seems embedded within a framework of perpetual, infinite change. All these detectable and universal changes are highly conserved within the properties of all natural objects. Now it turns out that Time is part of the physical dimensions of Space. And ever since Relativity was formalized ;Time is just as real as 'vacuum' or 'gravitation'. Time has a kind of structure that has an idealized geodesic that can be observed through watching everything and anything, It has a pathway that has 3 very important points... we commonly reference them as the Past, Present & Future. And we principally occupy the Present. And its bounded at the Speed of Light. To me, a perfect Time Machine would behave like a classical kinematic-scope. You have a box, containing the Universe. You have a crank handle that is pinioned to an infinite loop containing the cosmic expansion with the local Present at its center. You can speed it up, slow it down, run it forwards or backwards and hold it still at any given scale of focus. There is a cellar door at the base of the box... and you can step through it at the point you are scanning. That would be the perfect Time Machine.

It takes a human to INTERPRET what we see as time, yes, but time is real, it existed before humanity, and will continue to AFTER we are gone. It's a but hard to explain to someone who denies phenomenon out of sheer ignorance.

What is your point? Time is a measurement of the rate of vibration of particles, and the relativity is due to physical changes acting upon this vibration. That does not make time a dimension or "real" in the sense most people see it.

I'm sorry, these are incredibly complicated theories, and it is hard to fit them in 500 characters when the person I'm talking to is so unfamiliar with them. Please, search for the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, and do a search for Einstein Relativity versus Quantum Mechanics to see some papers and research on this, which absolutely does suggest that time is not a real phenomenon by a by-product of observation. Your concept of time is so tied up in other things it is hard to explain to you.

That isn't true. The computer clock is merely an arrangement of 1s and 0s that increases or decreases based on a programmed pattern, much like the oscillations of a non-electronic time piece. A watch doesn't move at the pace it does "because time"--rather, it moves at the pace it does because physical energy has been imbued into a spring/crank that is releasing the energy through entropy. Entropy is demonstrable--time is not.

Entropy = a measure of the state of (dis)order in a system. Entropy tends to increase (towards disorder), thus "breaking down" matter, which we equate as time passing. A pile of sand is more disorderly than a sandcastle, for example, and entropy is what causes it to move from the latter to the former. Memories are simply imagination in another form. The now is always now, it is all there is, it is eternal and forever changing. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by your last two sentences.
