Professor of International Political Economy at the London School of Economics Dr. Gautam Sen writes: Most people are not grasping why the West and especially the US is increasingly out for Narendra Modi’s blood. I am referring to the intensifying no-holds-barred libellous media campaign against him, the resumption of military sales to Pakistan and pointed hostile actions over J&K in recent days, sponsored by the State Department. The US obviously doesn’t like Indian policies that ignore its demands over Russia and Iran as well. But the real issue for open US hostility against Modi’s India is the underlying substantive political reason why Narendra Modi is able to ignore US demands so brazenly and without apology. By contrast, Europeans have succumbed to US pressure despite the calamity they’re facing as the war in the Ukraine continues and the very severe consequences of sanctions portend, with winter approaching. Their complete caving-in is an embarrassing stark contrast to India’s truculent disregard for US injunctions. What especially ails and frustrates the US is Narendra Modi’s huge self-confidence owing to domestic support of the overwhelming mass of Indians. They seem to especially like his robust and assertive foreign policy, which is true for even those who are less enamoured by his domestic policies. This is best illustrated by the heroic status acquired by India’s EAM S. Jaishankar for repeatedly and pointedly demolishing foreign critics, in their own capitals, while carrying out the policies of the Modi government. Note the Anglo Americans have tested Modi’s resilience and the stability of his domestic support. They have discreetly incited and/or supported various episodes of public disorder across India, by inserting themselves into domestic controversies. This subversion was designed to assess the level of discomfiture or panic that could be instigated. But they came up with little because Modi handled them successfully even though he had to retreat strategically over some issues. Yet, Modi did not lose public goodwill and nor did he show signs of recognising the need to make foreign policy compromises to deflect US anger towards him. There’s now only one remaining course of action for India’s frenemies, like the Anglo Americans, which is to somehow remove Modi from India’s political stage, in the knowledge that his successor would not enjoy the same degree of domestic support. And that would make such a successor to Narendra Modi more reasonable and accommodating towards US demands. This is the personal danger India’s most important political leader since Chhatrapati Shivaji now faces.

Jaishankar, the Hon EAM of India has my respect and admiration for his competence in Foreign affairs. He is both eloquent and effective while being sincere in his averment. I compliment him for his speeches at the UN and being a superb ambassador of his country, even as Minister. His travel to Aoteroa /NZ clearly is an official trip in his capacity as EAM, paid for by the Indian taxpayer. Speaking at the Kiwi-Indian Hall of Fame awards, is certainly in the remit of a foreign minister. His speech, however had not a mention of any of the awardees, or the Award itself. Plugging Modi@20, the book is a commercial activity which has no place in such and It is with great sorrow that I note the drumbeat of cloying sycophancy, which is better suited to a political rally. Paraphrasing the EAM's speech, Modi goes to Japan and returns with ideas of a bullet train, goes to Singapore and returns with ideas on social housing. Aw come on Hon. Minister if by implication you mean that Mr Modi had no idea of these marvels prior to his visits? Wow!!! It was amusing to see Hon Jacinda sporting a salwar kameez, replete with dupattah. When the US gave China permanent MFN nation status in 2001 (which was in temporary mode since Kissinger's intervention in 1981) NZ joined the bandwagon in 2008 with an FTA, falling over backwards in doing so. Talks with India kept hitting repeated road blocks with, in my view NZ's recalcitrant and obdurate support for the dairy lobby. Now that China is no longer in the US's good books, do jump on that bandwagon too. Brava!! lassie. Jaishankar, I address the man who was senior to me at our alma mater and a few Stephenians in your cohort are acquaintances. Both our fathers hail from the same district. Among your late dad's batch mates are a few friends of my family. I deplore your brown nosing speech.
