A mere seven months after his acquittal in a case in which he was alleged to have links with Maoists, former Delhi University professor and activist Dr Gokarakonda Naga Saibaba's passed away on Saturday, October 12. Saibaba, who had become a symbol of state repression, breathed his last at Hyderabad’s Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) after reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 58. During his ten-year incarceration, Saibaba had complained of the harrowing ill-treatment and torture meted out by jail authorities. Though he had permanent polio-paralysis, jail authorities had even refused to hand over his medication, Saibaba had told the media after his acquittal. TNM’s Shabbir Ahmed speaks to Meena Kandasamy, poet and novelist on Dr Saibaba’s death and how the system was numb to him.

Prof. Sai Baba needs justice even though he is no more. Jaggi Vasudev too has indulged in usurping vast Acres of landscape meant for Tribals livelihood and Wildlife welfare, but, he is encouraged by the State Leadership inspite of many Criminal Cases filed against him!! Are dissenters like Sai Baba sinned? What for Courts in India? Is ours true Democracy?

The criminal justice system in our country is in a very sad and shameful state. We can understand the role of the executive led by criminals like Modi and Shah who will certainly go to hell for their cruelty and wickedness. But what about the judiciary even that led by Justice Chandrachud? An abysmal failure to uphold human rights and the rule of law; it only prostituted itself to the executive in every way. Otherwise I just can't understand why scores of political prisoners are languishing in jail for years and long years without chargesheet or bail. Modi, Shah and Chandrachud must be held accountable for their criminal actions and omissions.
