DR650 ergos: how to set your seat height, footpegs, bars and windscreen︱Cross Training Adventure

From the suspension gurus at www.fullforcer... We look at the seat, lowering, footpegs, bars, risers and windscreen options for the DR650 to sort out the ergonomics, or ergos, of getting comfortable on the bushpig. Ergonomics, or ergos for short, is simply setting the bike up so you feel comfortable on it. Now the good news is if you are a hump backed short arse, chances are the DR650 will be close to perfect. As long as you have a metallic arse to cope with that terrible piece of concrete they call a seat. The DR650 is already quite low, but you can lower it even further. The easy way to lower the DR650 is simply change one of the linkage bolts to another hole for the rear, then slide the forks up through the triple clamps as well. Now, the big problem with the DR650 egos is when you start to get taller. For most of us, the triangle formed by the bars, seat and footpegs is simply too small and feels too cramped, especially when standing on the pegs.
If you are really short, then you can also get aftermarket seats that go lower than the stock seat. One thing to keep in mind is if you ride the DR650 aggressively the bike can bottom out already when jumping the bike. If you lower it then of course it's going to ground out even more often. But hopefully you are sensible and don't jump your bushpig.
The handlebars. These DR650 ridiculous bar mounts angle back toward the rider for god knows what reason, Mr Suzuki. So if you try to fit bar mounts you just make things worse by pushing the bars even further back. Stupid. Many of us find the perfect solution is the Rox pivoting risers. I opted for the big two inch risers due to being six foot four. The best thing is you just pivot these to where they feel right, then you can adjust your bars to suit as well.
Let's start with the DR650 footpegs. These are ridiculously high, and not far back enough for most of us. The cheapest and most common solution here is footpeg lowering plates, like these ones from Vince Strang Motorcycles, a simple bolt on solution that pushes the stock footpegs down and back to get more room on the bike. Remember if you jump the DR650 these hang below the frame and will hit the ground, but they are tough and can take the impact.
A new product on the market for the DR650 is these brilliant low peg mounts from Wirtz Wird EDM. The first mount just lowers the pegs, the second type also moves the footpegs back for taller riders. Simply bolt the original pegs on and off you go. You can buy these directly from Wirtz Wire EDM, or buy them through Procycle.
wirtzwireedm.com US$129 $139
Remember if you do move your DR650 footpegs to the rear but have small feet you may have trouble reaching the gear shift and rear brake pedal. But generally taller riders have big feet so this shouldn't become a prob.
There are all sorts of different DR650 footpegs available, personally I've fallen in love with Fastway's adventure footpegs. Mates of mine have these on their KTM 950s and rave about them. They come with a range of different sized cleats to fit and provide an incredibly roomy secure feel for boots. The much larger surface also means you chew out your boot soles far less often, a win win situation all round in my book.
If you are an older rider and find your upper body is getting beaten up nowadays, flexible handlebars can be worth looking at too. The Flexx bars work well for adventure riding on the softest setting, there are also the Twisted Engineering bars which are more for dirt bikes, but they will soon be bringing out a more flexible 4X version that will suit adventure bikes too.
The seat. What was Suzuki thinking? It's not a bloody motocross bike! I've been extremely happy with the Procycle seat foam and cover seat for only US$119.
This is much softer than the stock lump of concrete, wider, a bit lower, more grip, and a higher bit for your pillion passenger to get a better view over your shoulder. Perfect! There are other seats out there, have a look at Seat Concepts, Corbin, Sargent, the Moose Adventure Saddle. If you are on a very tight budget, look at the Sit & Fly Net Seat Cover for only US$29. Or if you are very tall, you can always just cut some upholstery foam and staple some black vinyl over the existing seat. I did this on my last DR650, it was butt ugly but oh so comfortable.
Fairings or windscreens? These start around $100 like this one I got from Adventure Bike Australia. If you like the do-it-yourself approach, just google the 'DR650 $6 windscreen mod'. You'll find the template for just cutting up a plastic trash can, bend it a bit then voila, you have a home made windscreen.

I love bike builds... Mine, other people's, yours... The Bush Pig is coming along nicely. That's almost enough to make me want a DR650 just so I can build it! I love that windscreen, noticed that in your last vid on the pig. It looks like it's perfect for taking the pressure off without a lot of buffeting. I'm a big BIG fan of wind protection (you should see the giant Cee Bailey's windshield I put on my FJR... Looks like a Goldwing!) regarding the seat; I ripped the existing cover off, glued additional firm foam to the existing foam, shaped it with an angle grinder, then re-stapled the cover back on. 15,000km later and I'm still happy with this $10 mod.

You know when I got my DR I had the dealership order a new seat . I asked them if they can get the Sargent seat but they said Suzuki has a good aftermarket gel seat . I said ok what do I know . 6 months later when I finally got the chance to swap it out I was stunned . It was way worse than the stock seat . It was harder and wider , made my hip joints hurt . I couldn't switch it back soon enough . So far the stock seat isn't so bad to me , it isn't my couch and I haven't done more than 80 miles in a day yet . As for the pegs yeah I am sick of kicking it down a gear instead of up a gear because my boots are level with the shifter . Sucks at red lights and think you have a nice cushion between you and traffic and some car is now on your ass .

start doing the easy parts yourself, and you will break through the fear and learn how easy it is to change most vehicles to improve them. Also recommended: don't resort to throwing lots of money at most things. Adjusting your controls is free and makes a significant difference if setup right vs wrong. Don't have money for an expensive set of bags? Go to goodwill and look for something cheap and rugged that you won't care about messing up. And color matching with spray paint goes a long way toward a bike not looking trashy.

This isn't as much of an extra tip, but as an owner of a DR650 with a Corbin seat, they're a weird buy. It's super wide and boxy on the edges, so it feels like it's cutting into your thighs everything you stand up. Also, it's rock hard. Every time I sit on my bike, I think my seat is just mildly uncomfortable. However, at the end of a 700 mile day on the DR, I still only felt "mildly uncomfortable,' so I guess all that extra width and support pays off.
@crosstrainingadventure
@crosstrainingadventure 8 лет назад
+dustysquito we picked the procycle seat partly because it was the cheapest, but also it wouldn't feel weird when standing up. but as you say, that extra width must pay off if sitting on the bike all day...

I know a guy who got a klx230 and it has an extra inch of cockpit room compared to the mighty xr! I have considered getting the seat concepts seat thinking maybe since it is better than the stock seat it might help, but in general I don't know if a happy butt will make the cramped position tolerable.

Can't really say what improvement that would make in each individual case. But generally any tall rider will be more comfortable if the pegs go down and back, and the bars are up and possibly forward too.

I'm 5'7", bought an '03 lowered. Took it for a test ride, and the bike resisted turning. Bought it anyway, it was dirt cheap, I guess the guy selling it didn't know what he had. First thing I did was restore it to the original height, and it became a ballerina. That's all it took. Six years later with a lot of'sensible' mods and I don't think I'll ever sell it. 0 problems, of course I did the neutral sensor screw fix, 68k miles later. But you're right, you need a new bar, bar risers, peg lowers and of course the seat. Seat Concepts, cheap and very good

Why would you want to put a wind screen on that bike, there is no better feeling than the wind on you chest, I like it when the wind is blowing 50 to 80 km and ride straight in to it doing 80 or 90 Km what a great feeling, Just remember to use your guts to hold you up not your arms. I could remember living 102 Km from work and the wind blowing straight up the highway all the way to work and then 10 hr later on the way home the wind would be blowing down the highway so a good wind in my face both ways. loved that ride. I did find the seat hard at first but after about 2,000 km it was just fine. I am only 5' 9" so the bike fit pretty good, But when my new one comes I will be looking for better food pegs, also good bark buster hand guards, heated grips for cold weather we get hear in Canada, and some mounting racks for my trekker side bags 33 Lt,and top box mount 46 liters.and a center stand for easy chain maintenance. and a bash plate, Boxes on for touring and shopping and off for dirt toads and trails. Also love the DR 650 on the windy roads this will be my 3 DR the first was the 600 kick start only, and the second the Dr 650 and the new one a 2020 DR 650 it is sitting on the show room floor just waiting for the accessories to come in, want every thing on when I pick it up.

I just bought a used 2012 DR with pivot pegs. I think it's going to help make it easier to improve my weightless rider technique. Also, I prefer more flexible adventure style boots that don't use a brick for a sole. The flexible pegs immediately seemed nicer for that, as it spreads the weight out when angling my foot. I've only just got the bike, but my early impression is pivot pegs will now be a go to for me.

Huge range of foot pegs on offer, depends on what you are chasing, Pierre. And how much you want to spend. And whether you want to lower the pegs. Or move them to the rear as well. Procycle stocks quite a few of them, I'd suggest always checking directly and see if it's cheaper from the manufacturer. @crosstrainingadventure 8 лет назад
+Survival Pax i've had three DR650s and three DRZ400s too. there's a lot of overlap between them, obviously the DR650 is more on the adventure side, the DRZ is closer to the dirt bike side of things. my idea of heaven would be either get the DR650 down closer to the DRZ's weight, or bore and stroke the DRZ to maybe 530cc for extra grunt. sweet!
@Joburble
@Joburble 8 лет назад
+motomax IMO, yes. The DR650SE is a great bike. It is still the only bike that I would not hesitate to buy another one of if I somehow destroyed my current one. I love all my other bikes, but the DR650 loves me back. It is quite a humourous bike to ride if you push it and just leaves a smile on your dial as it does its best to comply with your wishes. It is generally as reliable as a hammer and if something does go wrong you can normally fix it at the side of the road with a spoon. On some other bikes you have to pay thousands of dollars more for ABS and TC, but not on this bike, it comes standard. The brakes won't let you lock up the front on the blacktop (ABS), and the rear won't break loose unless there are very special circumstances (TC). No need for Honda's HISS security system either as the Suzuki DR650 is its own anti-theft device (especially in the grey). I never have to check to make sure the antifreeze is topped up and I never have to worry about the fuel injection or the fuel pump giving up the ghost while in the middle of nowhere. Great fuel economy too. What more could you want :-)

@crosstrainingadventure
@crosstrainingadventure 8 лет назад
+Neil W the DR650 is almost half the price, so even if you completely overboard it will be cheaper. but a lot of these mods can be done very cheaply or with home made gear.... generally $1500 can transform the DR if you are on a budget. i owned a ktm 690 and the suspension on those needs a lot of work too to make them work properly... when both are set up properly i'd say the handling is very similar.
