I don't understand why they switched the character relationships around (Mina being Van Helsing's daughter) and changing key events in the novel (Mina becoming a vampire) when in the book, Lucy became a vampire and Mina was under Dracula's control.
@lemorab1
@lemorab1 8 месяцев назад
@@richardlahan7068 I don't understand this either. Lucy Westenra was Dracula's first victim in England, made a vampire, and Mina Murray almost became one, but was ultimately saved with Dracula's death. I haven't seen the Langella film since it first came out in 1978, and I don't remember if Arthur Holmwood, Quincy Morris, and Jack Seward were in it or not. I assumed they didn't film the Transylvania sequence due to budget constraints. I thought bringing the timeframe forward to about 1910, with its fashions and motor cars, was interesting. I liked this movie, Langella was a great Dracula, but I liked the Coppola film better, even though the special effects were sometimes a bit too much. Gary Oldman was also a great Dracula and so was Louis Jourdan, in a much less well known film, made in the 1970's, I think.

This movie and the 1931 movie were both derived not from the actual Stoker novel but rather from the Balderston/Dean stage play adaptation of the book. I would have to say that Laurence Olivier deserves most credit for being a part of this film since it was said that he was very, very ill at the time that most of the cast & crew were concerned that he wouldn't live long. Yet he was able to live another decade after finishing Dracula. And some would call this ironic that since this was a vampire movie, Laurence Olivier had a disease in which he would bled continuously by a slight 'nick' or scratch.

With supreme irony, it is Dracula who denounces Van Helsing's use of the Host against him as "Sacrilege!". Which it would be in real life; no lay person is allowed access to the Eucharist for any reason, except to consume it as a communicant. (In the novel, Van Helsing claims that he has a dispensation to use the Host in this manner; but, in reality, no such dispensation would ever be granted.) Dracula's reaction has a fascinating subtext. The real Dracula (Vlad Tepes, 1431-1476) is remembered as a Christian warrior-prince, who defended southeastern Europe from the invading Muslims; when Bram Stoker's fictional avatar tells Jonathan Harker the history of his region, he takes great pride in recounting these events. It would be delightfully ironic -- and more than a little tragic -- if Dracula, even in his undead state, which forces him to flee from the Sacrament, were still trying to cling to some shred of the eminence as a warrior for Christ which he had earned in life.

So you're saying that Frank Langella's/Dracula's choice in his use of the word; "Sacriledge" is a nod to his former role as a defender of Christianity as Vlad Tepes? Dracula very likely thought he'd either cow Van Helsing into a hasty departure, or actually believed himself demonstrating respect and magnanimousness by allowing the doctor to retain his life despite having interfered in the Count's plans-that turning his daughter would prove sufficient price for having offended him. It may have something to do with his origins. In a few versions of the story, Count Dracula was once a religious man, but renounced God when he was changed (like when he was linked to Vlad the Impaler in the 1992 movie). As explained in “Blade” vampires have at least 3 Achilles heels: 1. Silver 2. Sulfur (garlic used here) 3. @josephmanno4514
@josephmanno4514 8 месяцев назад
@@ArmyJames That's completely wrong. Vampires are ABSOLUTELY vulnerable to the symbols of Holy Mother Church. Other religions' tokens are useless, but since the Cross and Crucifix (in Stoker's chosen mythology) represent the truth of God's Power and Authority, they CAN repel a vampire. Blade is meaningless Marvel crap. Stoker's Dracula takes priority. Oh, and ... in Marvel comics, crosses and crucifixes do have power over the undead.

"Sacrilege!" he says of a cross being held before him. I believe in another episode of this mini-series, he told Van Helsing something like "Satan and I are partners and together we will destroy you." Yeah, a little hypocritical there, drac. Frankly Van Helsing should have just left the door to a blood bank unlocked and *tainted* all the blood with holy water. Hhehehehe......🧛🏻‍♂️💉💧😵⚰️

BECAUSE GODS PEOPLE WAS OUT TO DESTROY HIM. DEMONS, DEVIL'S, AND VAMPIRES ARE NOT GOD'S. TOYS OR THING. HE LIKES. BUT TO DESTROY THEM IS GODS WAY TO PREVENT THEM FROM MULTIPLYING.

That was not just a cross: that was supposed to be the Consecrated Host, which, as every Christian still new during the lifetime of Vlad Tepes, is the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ. Frankly some of the ways Van Helsing uses the Host, even in the book, are indeed sacrilegious.

@@christosvoskresye Not really. Stoker's wife was Catholic, and he knew Catholic dogma. In the novel he reports that he was given a dispensation to employ the Host in that way.

Lawrence Olivier is second best Van Helsing, number one is, of course, Peter Cushing.

I do not understand, why does Dracula screams sacrilege if Van Helsing wasn't doing anything scarilegious?
@bobchipman4473
@bobchipman4473 9 месяцев назад
Because of his usage of the Eucharist (keeping It instead of eating It) is technically sacrilege. Although, I think in the book, Van Helsing later says he received dispensation from the Church to use It for this.

Dracula response may come from the fact (I'm not Catholic, so I'm not certain) that only a priest may hold a communion wafer as it is considered the literal body of Christ. Therefore Van Healing holding it would be sacrilege.

Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee and Frank Langella are the best Draculas. Change my mind. With an honorable mention for Klaus Kinski for his role in the Nosferatu remake.

Dracula was correct. Van Helsing was not a priest, so he is not supposed to use the Eucharist for anything other than consuming it as part of communion.
