Considering it is the 35th anniversary of the Castlevania franchise...what better way to celebrate than to do a massive retrospective on every mainline game ever released from Konami. From the NES 8-bit originals to the Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Nintendo 64, PS2, Xbox and beyond! Because Castlevania is retro gaming royalty and it's only fitting we pay it some tribute!
Patreon Thanks : Seth Peterson, John Thompson, Paul Daniel, Porch, John Anderson, RayceARoni, Kuranghi, Jason Hixon, Alex Tessler, Jonathan Leung, Martin Donlon, Tom Van Deusen, Barobob, Steve Randall, ahab, K-2, Renaissance 2K, Ivar Wennerholm, Adrien Sebbane, tobemorecrazy,
Mike Puelinckx, Tony Escobar, H7, Humanoide70, Ben Parfitt, Holger Schmidt, Tim Lehner, matschmonster, Shad Uttam, Dan L, James Mann, Richard Schneider, Coupon Joe, Sunder Raj and Dorfus!
Based on the Castlevania franchise so far you'd have thought Dracula was allergic to Sega consoles...but here he is in all his Sega Genesis / Mega Drive glory! Castlevania Bloodlines is a legit game...but its also pretty different from everything that came before it...like the fact it doesn't have a character with the last name Belmont! But what is here is 16-bit retro gaming glory on the Mega Drive and worth every fans time to play! It's also known as Vampire Killer in Japan!
I played this on the MiSTer FPGA Sega Genesis / Mega Drive core!

It's one of the best. Absolute best. The best part is John Morris is like a normal mode and the other guy is basically easy mode. Incredible music, stunning visuals. This is a must own and to me its symphony, rondo, Vania 3 and bloodlines as the best and my fav's

Totally agree. When I was a kid playing this game at home kids at school didn't even know about it, not even those with a Sega Genesis lol. I love Bloodlines, definitely my fav classic style of Castlevania after Rondo. Also I'm the weirdo who much prefers the sound on the Genesis over SNES, but only when it's done properly like this game and not using the GEMS driver. When it was programmed properly the sound is crisp, warm and arcade-like. SNES is distinctive and can have great sound but always is a bit muffled to me.

A really good Genesis ost can't be beat. It's just an opinion, but sometimes the SNES sound chip produces washed out and watered down tracks compared to the Genesis punchy sound. But, for every fantastic ost, we get 5 that sound completely terrible. Like... Xmen. Or Tazmania....

Absolutely my favorite of the classic styled Castlevanias. If I had to guess why it never got a lot of recognition until now, it was probably because it never got officially re-released until the anniversary collection a few years ago.

Yeah, this game not getting talked about more often definitely comes from a combination of it being on Genesis when the majority of Castlevania fans would've been SNES-owners, not getting any official re-releases until the recent Anniversary Collection, and little to no coverage from retro gaming RU-vidrs in the 2000s. It is absolutely a hidden gem amongst Castlevania games.

The biggest surprise for me was when Konami made this game canon in Portrait of Ruin. Since they're not of the Belmont family line, I completely expected the characters to be left to the passage of time. But nope. They doubled down on the Morris line as part of Castlevania. And both Portrait of Ruin and Bloodlines are awesome entries for both Metroidvania and Classicvania styles of gameplay.

Even I have never known about this Castlevania until 2007. When I finally got to play this, I was absolutely blown away! It's no wonder why prices for the physical game are so high. There's a homebrew demo port of Castlevania from the SharpX68000 for the Genesis. It's something like a tech demo to show how accurately it plays. I hope the devs persue a full port cause the genesis deserves it.

I think Bloodlines qualifies as 'ahead of its time.' It's on so many 'best of' lists these days, but was entirely dismissed in its time by a lot of outlets. Part of it was surely the wow factor in IV on SNES. But it really is just an amazing game.

I rank the 16-bit Castlevanias thusly: Super Castlevania IV > Castlevania Bloodlines > Dracula X. You'll notice I didn't include Rondo of Blood, because the PC-Engine is an 8-bit system. A fancy one, but 8-bit none the less.

@@VideoGameEsoterica Honestly, Rondo of Blood doesn't really did it for me. Take away the anime cutscenes, and you have a frustrating game that punishes you for not finding all the secret exits. Meanwhile Bloodline's only real offense is the boss gauntlet when you meet Death.

Personally, I prefer the MD/Gen's sound in a lot of situations. It couldn't handle samples like the SNES, but the tones it produced were so clean, especially the highs and lows. Most SNES music suffered from low sample bitrates due to space constraints, leaving it sounding crackly, muffled, or else buried under reverb trying to cover up the poor samples. Plus the MD could handle more channels at once.
@VideoGameEsoterica
@VideoGameEsoterica Год назад

I wonder if there's some reference to some vampire demon that has a crotch mouth in Japan that's lost on me. In Digimon, a villain called Myotismon (Vamdemon in the original japanese) has an evolved form whose weakpoint was his crotch, where there was a small orb that was basically just tiny hands, eyes, and a big mouth.
