"I just mortgaged our future without consulting or informing anyone on the staff, but it's okay, because I won't even bother to check if it screws us with the cap until after the deal is done." A lot of people complained this was an unrealistic movie, but frankly that sounds a lot like what the real Cleveland Browns would do.

The only silly part, was him even worrying about the cap difference. This was just to give her some lines and to create phoney tension and conflict. In reality, you can shift the money around for years to make anything work, for one simple reason. The cap almost always increases each year, so your extra money will eventually appear. Just redo someone elses deal to backload their current deal, and you dont even have to cut anyone. The cap is a zero problem here. Especially since these rookies no longer get mega deals right put of college anymore.

If a GM were to make this trade and his a franchise QB - he’s set for the rest of that QBs career as long as he build is around him smartly. What the film doesn't tell you, what it hides behind its celebrations for "victory" is how poor this GM is and how this entire front office will probably be fired or walk away within the next year, two max. All I'm saying is there is a future hall of fame in the draft and you can get him if you have the 1st overall pick the thing is you gotta figure out who is that guy.
@jackdonith
@jackdonith 2 года назад
that's common in all sparts drafts like the NBA draft. Jordan was 3rd choice and in the very same draft Stockton was #16 or something. First of all teams may just get what the team needs so nobody blames you for picking Olajuwon, a fantastic center btw, if that's what you needed because nobody knew Jordan would become GOAT.
@KWCline91
@KWCline91 2 года назад
@@jackdonith that draft was one of those exceptions where you the team that drafted first didn’t pick the guy who eventually was the best player ever and still, they wound up being great. Hakeem was the second best player in the draft even though he was first. You can’t fault Houston for that situation. Another case would be 96 where Iverson was drafted #1 and he had a stellar career. But 12 picks later, Kobe Bryant was drafted and he winds up as the best player in the draft.

It’s really not three consecutive first rounders, they swap picks the first year and then yeah two consecutive years of firsts.

100% incorrect. You're comparing the value of three picks versus the value of one. If you cancel out the two pics this year, then you're comparing zero to two

The Jaguars probably would have got 3 years of first rounders, a few seconds and thirds to trade pick 1 this year.

Imagine trading 3 first round picks and ending up with Trey Lance. They actually made a worse deal than Sunny Weaver Jr.

If your trading 3 consecutive first-round picks for the number overall pick, it has to be a franchise QB, which in this movie would've been Bo, but ended up taking a pass-rusher and just mortgaged the entire team's future smh a typical browns move.

Here’s what I didn’t like about the movie, in the end they cheered because they got back their picks and got a special teams guy. That isn’t winning. You still gave up your primary QB slot and you got almost nothing in return for it. You would have been better off just picking another 3-4 players in the 2nd and 4th rounds.

I don’t understand how they count THIS draft as “giving up”. They literally switched spots with the Seahawks and gave up 2 first round picks.
@evilsWa
@evilsWa Год назад
Cool that means you don't understand how valuable draft picks are… Sacrificing future draft picks to move up six spots… Six freaking spots? And as the movie proves they didn't even have to do that to get the guy that they ended up with.
@Rizzy_K
@Rizzy_K Год назад
@@evilsWa No, that’s not what my comment meant. I’m not talking about the 2nd rounders, I’m talking the 1st rounders. The movie says the Browns gave up 3 first round picks, they didn’t. They retained their 1st round pick in THIS draft and simply swapped spots with the Seahawks. So they gave up 2 future first round picks, not 3 future first round picks. Clearly I know what I’m talking about, it’s you who’s confused.

I like how when he was informing the crew of what he traded for the #1, the next year's #1 was totally fine but the #1 2 years down? Oh no, you've ruined everything! Like I get the concern over an overpay but it's so ridiculous that they would pivot from 'Should be fine' to 'Everything is gone' between the 2nd and 3rd #1.

The difference between two firsts and three firsts is pretty big. It's the difference between paying $400k for a house and paying $600k.
@TheLastAbacus

There is an actual figure placed on the value each pick in the draft has all the way down to the last pick, and front offices use those metrics to determine the value of players based on prospect ratings and other factors. Two first round picks is a player like Khalil Mack or Calvin Johnson, a game changer. Three firsts is a player like Luck or Stafford or Bradford, guys who were highly highly recruited and scouted.
@hornfan722
@hornfan722 6 лет назад
Great point. For a franchise QB (which over half of the NFL is in need of) there shouldn’t be anything you’d refuse to give up. A player like Andrew luck or Carson Wentz positively impacts your organization for 10+ years.

+Walker Anderson except they're not getting a franchise QB, they're getting a chance to pick a guy they hope will become one. JaMarcus Russell was a #1 overall pick too, how'd that turn out? As bad as he was for Oakland, imagine how much worse it would have been if they'd given up 3 straight first round picks for him. Even Luck is a cautionary tale, as good as e started out, he's played 22 games in the last 3 seasons, and who knows if he'll ever fully recover.

People who criticize this movie are missing the point. The point the movie is attempting to make is that Weaver is off his game because his father died. He made a stupid impulse decision to give up three first rounders for a player they don’t really need. The “plot holes” you point out like “why would he make the deal without looking into Callahan”, and “why would he make the move without checking the salary cap implications” are put into the movie on purpose to show Weaver is not thinking clearly and smartly. It’s part of the plot.
