We head to a 1st annual draft horse show! It was awesome! There were so many beautiful draft breeds there! Percheron, Clydesdales, Belgians, Shires and more! We got to see 4-hitch, 6-hitch, unicorn teams AND Jr got to drive one of these teams! It was a good time for sure and we are hoping to have Oliver participate in next years draft horse show!
Check out Oliver’s other videos to learn all about his story.

GOOD LORD!!! These folks have got some serious money put into these horse rigs and harnesses!! What a cool event---thanks for your great comments too, very entertaining.
@Menoetia
@Menoetia 3 месяца назад
And *serious* money into transportation! A lot of draft horse show competitors have a separate truck and trailer _just_ to haul the cart or carriage and all the harness equipment, nevermind the horses, which don't often fit in a standard horse trailer themselves - many need a specially outfitted big rig hauler, especially once you get up to the four-in-hand teams... but winning is big money, too!

This video was very well shot and narrated by you. Thank you. I felt like I was there. JR, you are indeed a unicorn yourself-not many people could’ve driven that three-horse unicorn hitch first off with no real direction except for a rather surprised and nervous owner. I hope that you can become friends with him and learn from him. Oliver is so well tuned-in to you already. I feel that no matter what class you end up going into with him, he will excel for you. As for the ladies’ single carriage competition-you are right, the Belgian that won was the classiest horse ever. I had always heard that the ladies’ classes are require high-stepping horses, and the winning Belgian certainly was high-stepping. Breathtaking to watch because she definitely had “presence,” that indefinable quality that sets a horse apart from the others.

@@sunnyoakPercheron horses win the majority of all six-horse hitch classes. The next breed after that would be Belgians, but none competed in that class here. The reason they won is that Percherons' knee action is higher and the judges like that more. Shires and Clydesdales don't have that kind of action, so they generally place lower in the hitch classes.

My Grandfather and my 4 uncles farmed together with Clydesdales in Alberta, Canada when I was growing up. The Clydes are real Gentle Giants. We used them to work the farm and to clear the land. We took them to the river to get water for the house, the garden, and the animals. They pulled huge cedar wine barrels on a stone boat 3 miles there and back once a week. And I got to drive. ❤

I drove my Arabian gelding with a 4 wheel antique buggy in shows. We never did less than 2nd place, and almost always won. I used to take him down the road in rural southern Wisconsin with a 2 wheel cart that converted to a sleigh in winter, and his 4 wheel buggy. He was my all around horse who did everything (English pleasure, trail & command classes, bareback and just riding through the fields and forests), but driving was really fun for him. He was always engaged and eager and I could tell he loved it. And yeah, you only do walk and trot. Cantering (at least in the pleasure driving classes) gets you marked down. Can't wait to see you train Oliver in harness.

I know I'm jaded here, but as special as those horses looked, Oliver was still the most handsome of them all. he is such a gentle giant, and boy is it obvious how he loves and trusts you. Even dirty, as you say, he glows. His color has gotten so rich and his muscles have built up. He's like a child who reaches a point and then suddenly grows like a weed. Can't wait to see his babies. It’s one thing to be an individual show horse. To be able to show while working with one or more together is quite another. And to do it all in unison demands an intelligence & awareness that takes this to a level most of us have never had to consider as part of your equine toolkit. Oh yeah and steppin high and looking good while doing it doesn’t hurt either. Looks like I got draft horse fever, yes I do. Showtimes comming Oliver!

Brings me back to watching the draft horses at the state fair! I think the most jaw-dropping thing I've ever seen was a class of eight-in-hand where they asked each team to swing to the left and right. That's a LOT of horses that all have to know what they're doing right down to a tee, and it's mesmerizing to watch them trot in unison.

I’ve seen draft horse teams back up a wagon as if to a loading dock. Then whole team swings “gee or haw” as if out of the street. Then straighten out pull out of the dock and gee or haw off down the street. Amazing but can easily see how this would be their job to deliver their load safely. Loved it.

I know how dangerous it can be with these huge animals especially the big teams, not only for the trainer, but for the horses backing up and turning while being in this equipment. I’m glad to see the Percheron teams because my last father, who passed last October, loved to talk about his two uncles who farmed land in Kansas using Percheron Mares when my dad was a boy in the ‘40s. The way he described it, those mares loved to work the fields and would be almost prancing as they were getting ready to start the day. And each uncle would brag about how his mare was better than the other. Different times, wonderful images. Many thanks, now I’m a subscriber.

Thanks for sharing! I worked at the Kentucky Horse Park for a summer in the 70's as a volunteer when it opened and got to work with their Percherons pulling a trolley tour. I found the draft breeds to be easy to work with other than their giant feet! Later, I worked for the KHP in the museum and was able to attend all Park shows for free. My favorite annual event was a driving show which included an exhibition of a 10-hitch of Mammoth Mules. This show made me remember that event which featured time races as well as obstacle driving and we would see everything from Draft crosses to Standardbreds to Fresians and even pony classes.

A lot of great horses. I was pleased that the ones I liked best, the Percherons, did so well. They were clean in their movements. I loved the mules. They were only mules, but they were working mules and were well trained. I think Oliver would look very posh in front of a big wheeled cart. Very old school!

Hahaha, hey JR, loved the shameless plug for your website!! 🤣🤣🤣 Ollie is looking so healthy and strong, you really fixed him up!! Lakota is a beautiful boy, you've got really great horses. The show was a lot of fun to watch, those horses are huge! Great video, thank you.

That was great. Those horses are so powerful. I think it would be great to see a pulling contest.

Oh my goodness gracious, you did great as the volunteer driver. You even wore a shirt that was the same color as the drivers. It is all in the hands and voice to command that much horse power. I love that you shared your RU-vid channel.

So happy to see Oliver looking so good! What a sweetheart he is too! I enjoyed very much seeing the draft horse competition show of these beautiful animals! What a lot of work and expense for those owners! WOW! My first exposure to draft horses was the Working Horses With Jim channel you mentioned. Such a down-to-earth practical channel to see how these horses are used. Then I got to wondering what happens to some working horses at the end of their working careers and I found Fletcher Farms Amarillo, LLC RU-vid channel, a small but growing loving rescue who saves these gentle giants as they sometimes face a not-too-happy end by owners who can't afford to keep them when they can no longer work. The stories at their channel will take you through the full gamut of emotions, mostly joyful but also some heartbreaking realities that this breed faces as they age out of working life! Also the large and well established Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue channel gives draft horse lovers some hope, just as you gave us hope for Oliver when you rescued him from a terrible fate! Great video, as always! Thanks for sharing and good luck to you and your family in all your future endeavors!

Oliver looks soooo much better than when you initially got him. Wow ! He's now my favourite horse because he's so nice. I'm sure he appreciates the care you give him... he feels pampered like a Prince that he is !!!

That Belgian was amazing. I don’t know anything about horses but the way the horse trotted with high knees was just so far above the rest of the class, I could tell it was special.

Draft horse shows are a lot of fun. I love how they show Friesans. This breed is a lighter draft horse. When they are shown pulling a wagon they have side lamps which are lit. I can't remember if it's a cart or wagon. It's a thing of beauty to watch. I remember my friend's dad showing one of his Friesans ages ago in a confirmation class. I just remember the horses being shown in a really nice leather halter no other tack. You might look around for something like this for Oliver. You're going to have a blast training him to drive. 😁

I am just at the beginning of this video. I feel really happy that you experience and express so much happiness from taking care of and doing things with Oliver. I sooo hope when you compete with him that you win top honors. You both really deserve it……Oliver seems really happy and at peace with his new horsey family too (Sioux and Baby Lakota). I’m just so glad that you found Oliver and he found you. Your finding each other seems to have only resulted in happiness.
