Today Jim and the draft horses are out mowing hay! We wanted to share with you some of the problems we face when mowing a hay field. After mowing the field, we put the drone up in the air to show you how all the animals are enjoying a summer night!

Good morning! Thank you for the very practical information you give; you're not just videoing yourself mowing, you show us the real details (like what do do when your mower goes down on mowing day!) of using *real* horsepower that I haven't found anywhere else. This is knowledge that's in danger of being lost, and you're preserving it, and I think that's amazing. PS I also love that y'all are letting Duke and Earl spend most of their time maturing even though you're pressed for horses with Buck gone and Lady on maternity leave. You treat your horses like partners, not slaves. If you didn't I'd have been gone a long time ago no matter how much info you could provide. Respect.

Such a farmer, using adjustable wrench and vise grip. Gives this Mechanic heartburn to watch (always wants the right tool for every job), but also great nostalgia for helping my godfather doing the same things on his farm growing up!

Jim thank you for going over the fields with the drone. Nice work with Ken, Bill, and Baron. Love seeing all the cows with Duke and Earl who are getting big. The chickens and the cat were also cute. Lady and Bree at the end was priceless. Bree getting bigger and Lady looking fantastic after having her foal. A fresh cut hay field is always so pretty. I love how it smells too. So fresh and clean! I enjoyed getting to see all the cattle, Duke, Earl, the chickens and kitty cat at the end! You and Brenda have a beautiful farm!❤ Even after Baron and Ken worked and switched out with Baron and Bill, that Baron still has the pretty prancing in his step! I wonder if Duke and Earl will be the same?! Little Bree gets prettier every day! She was so cute running to get close to mom when she heard the drone!! Adorable❤

The equipment malfuntion and Jim's repair was a great learning opportunity for me. Good to know how things work, even if I'm not out mowing a field with horses. The bonus of the drone flyover at the end of the video was lovely! 😊

So very interesting the mindset to that problems are a part of life and there is no sense in railing at them just have the foresight to try to have things on hand to fix and a tool box right on the tractor to help fix them when there is trouble. Castle nuts !That's how you tighten the clutch on the old JD'S, you have 4 and have to tighten them evenly! Hay looks great! I know your pain on cutting lodged hay! Mowed a lot of hay with a John Deere B & #5 sickle bar mower! Duke & Earl, living the life! Can't wait to see you hook them up!

My father, who has now passed, grew up on a farm that only used horses. Somehow they ran an entire 120 acre farm with just two horses!. My dad said the farming they did was the same farming done in the 1800's. He lamented about watching his peers plow and cultivate with a tractor while he was sent out in the fields with the horses. Anyway, a story he liked to tell............dad was about 12 (I failed to mention my dad hated the farm and left as soon as he could) and during harvest time the days were long and hard. Dad said to his father, why do we have to cut all this wheat, harvest the grain, store it and put up the straw? The answer was to feed the horses. My dad then asked why do have to cut all this hay, transport it to the barn and store in the barn (they stored it loose which, as you know is a whole process of its own!). The answer was the same, to feed the horses. My dad contemplated these answers and finally asked his dad........"then why don't we just shoot the horses." Dad said he got a look that would kill and was told not to do anymore thinking and more doing.

Where would we be without vise grips and an adjustable wrench. I know we would be lost . The mower won't break when it's not in use that's for sure. Wish I was close to your farm as I started my mechanic career at a Massey Ferguson garage and I would love to help you out. Godbless and stay safe.

Printaboul = Gaetan All the knowledge that I have about horses, especially work horses, is theoretical, since I'm more of a dreamer than a doer, I never got to drive a team. Why I say this, because I alwarys thought that Stallions were for reproductive mission only, and not so for work. But really, either Baron is special, or you are special, and by God, you both are special. Or it is just a thing that can be. Your videos really widened my vision of what working of a Stallion could be. In my reveries, I was afraid of Stallions. When ever possible, I would appreciate listening to the differences of working stallions compare to geldings and mares. As always, mille fois merci...

When I used to hay with horses I ran metal pitman arms. Was tired of broken wooden ones and had no problems after that. Don't worry nothing will break if you get plugged up, the mower wheels will just skid. Now I run metal pitman arms in my power mowers with still no problems. This method was told to me by an old timer who's father used to do it.

@@johnkomosa4089 Hi John, thank you! My soil is hard like stone with cracks in it. Some rain may come tomorrow, but that's not enough, as that dry soil will not suck up the water. On the other hand, I now need to cut my hay. It was a great trip, I could really rest and relax, and finally I learned the principles of the collars and harnesses they use, which I am so thankful for. Have a great day! -Chris

Hey jim, watched your videos from time to time. Enjoying your craftmanship, the Very good relation with your very good trained horses an, the beautiful land and your "paise" , your zen like approach. In this video particulary , ( time arround 18:00 ) I would like to comment that I was teached to not touch the cutting parts of the mower with your bare or gloved hands while in the field with the horses.( Although you RAISED, SO DISCONNECTED THE TRACTIONBAR? While cleaning the cutterpart ) .so I would use a wooden or other fork to remove the grass that gets sticked in the cutterbar. Our antique mowers have like a tube solded, where you can keep the fork save, upwards, while driving, mowing. Wishing you good continuation , and nice vibes, kind regards,Ber

That looks like sub clover and is a great nitrogen fixer, you can cut hay several times in a good year and it just keeps producing, then when it looks finished for the summer you can turn the cows onto it and they clean up any leftovers. They do well for the rich pickings, and fatten great on it.

Sickle bar mowers are really neat but can be very fickle. Ive used them on tractors. Back before I had major head injuries I started to design a gard / chute to prevent clogging kinda like the gaurds that were put on the front of old time trains that would push snow and debris to the side. Jim's hay mowing reminds me of when on the farm we had giant pasture grass front lawn that I and my sister had to mow along with other chores but of course hand push mower and we had to do a lot of backing up when it got too tall but I was only 6 so didn't have that much power😊😅😂

I see what you were talking about, the grass tends to lay down in front of the cutter, it seems that you need a paddle wheel like on a header to handle the grass hay. Love the horses my friend.

Isn't it annoying when a piece of equipment breaks in the middle of doing the work? As much as I like working with my horses, I dread equipment failure. But you take it in stride admirably! The weather seems to cooperate in your region, it seems.

Enjoy your video, but I noticed there doesn’t seem to be any grease on the moving parts, I’ve changed from using a normal grease to a synthetic grease, it is more waterproof and seems to last longer. Member when I was a young lad my dad used the sickle mower and the horses spooked and took off, thankfully dad wasn’t hurt, but the mower needed some repairs, every time I see you mowing it takes me back and I realize how hard the work was. Thanks for sharing.

I think you could "somewhat" move the cut hay away from the edge of the swath(sp) board by adding a flat metal 4-6" high angled in away from the edge of the cut to give you a clear indication? just a thought...

We had a sickle bar exactly like yours on an old 1957 international low boy. Had the same problems. Used it to trim along the roads in the state park. 18 miles of roads.

Love my old New Holland 477 haybine, walks right through that stuff like cotton candy. We mowed for years with a 3 pt hitch sickle bar mower and fought the same things. I mow with the horses a bit and do it in the afternoon when things are dry if I can, My Deering has some of the same features as yours but the pitman arm is different, I have a bronze bushing on the flywheel end and it needs lots of lube, has an old grease cup, the kind you twist down, but I put a zerk fitting on it. Shot of grease every 20 minutes and oil in the oil cups. I reckon I average an acre an hour , with a 5 ft bar.
