Drafting a shirt pattern to fit your doll

We covered drafting a pattern for leggings a while back, so the next step is learning to draft a pattern for a matching shirt. This tutorial will show you how to draft a base pattern for a t-shirt to fit your doll. Since it's a base pattern, you may need to tweak your prototype for a perfect fit. We'll cover ideas for tailoring to fit a specific doll another time. :)
If you need help putting the finished pattern together, don't forget to check out my older videos to see instructions for sewing a t-shirt for your doll.
Happy sewing, and don't forget to show me what you make!

I have been sewing for 50 years (!) and this is the best tutorial. Really helped me understand how to draft a pattern. If you are having trouble following, watch it again and do it step by step, stopping the video while you complete each step. I have never tried to draft a pattern before, except by tracing an old garment I have cut apart, but I found this very helpful if I work along with her. Thank you!

For viewers who may be struggling to keep up, I recommend watching this on a computer. There's an option on the desktop version of RU-vid that lets you slow down videos. Hope this helps :) I recently finished my one-billionth attempt at creating a pattern for my doll based entirely off of trial and error and it fits pretty well and looks decent, but only for casual tees. I have to try this method! I want to be able to make very nice clothes for my dolls I think this will really help me. Now I'm itching to sew and design clothes!

this is really great! I think I would be lazy and just cut out the first half and the second half at once by folding the paper (I would probably use graph paper too as I have no idea what a French curve is and I think that would make the curved bits easier). Thanks for doing all the work for us as usual and I'm fairly sure even I can't mess this up because, as always, you explained it really well! I love your pattern videos because, once you have made it for a particular doll, you have it and can change the original for other items of clothing.

Thank you so much! I am new to sewing and this tutorial is so fabulous! Can you please tell me if you have a follow-up video to this one to actually sew with this drafted pattern? Do I simply trace this pattern on a cloth and cut it? Then how/what do I sew?
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground 6 лет назад
Yup, once you have your pattern, it's time to pick fabric, trace and cut! How the shirt goes together depends on whether or not you choose to leave an opening in the back, which is helpful for very small dolls. You can see how to sew a shirt with an open back here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8qhnJ_RQUcs.html And you can see how to sew one with no opening here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-unu91ucV-yQ.html There will be some variances because every pattern is slightly different, but the basics are always the same. :) Hope that helps!

@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground 7 лет назад
Believe me, it's not easy for me either :) I actually suffer from mild dyscalculia, so making patterns is always a bit of a challenge since it relies on so many numbers. There are other ways to do it though, such as the tape method, and I'll be doing more videos on that in the future. Maybe something like that will work better for you too!
@PinkMaltese22
@PinkMaltese22 7 лет назад
Yes, that would be great, if you could do a video to show the tape method. For me it's the same way as for skybluespike above............I really like the video, but I am lost as soon as you start speaking in numbers.............the video is really fast as well, and for someone like me, who has NO idea whatsoever on how to make a pattern, it's too fast to follow. I have been thinking for the longest time, that there must be some easier way to do this..............But anyway, I like watching your videos!:)
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground 7 лет назад
Ah, yeah... It's really hard to strike a balance between quick enough to be watchable and informative enough to be digestible! I have the tape method on my list of videos for the new year though, so I'll try to move it up the list and see if I can get to it sooner. ^^

hi, this is really helpful! thank you for making this! :-) I'm still watching it to try to understand each step better, and its a very straightforward tutorial, so thanks for that! :D (I'm not so good at math either, so I'm going to try to take it slow when doing this.) ;v; quick question, sorry if this is a silly question, but I've been wondering this for a while now...does this technique also work for smaller dolls? (such as lati yellow, obitsu11, pukifee, nendoroid dolls, etc...) I'm guessing the smaller the doll, the more difficult it is to make patterns and sew clothes, since small clothes can be hard to make, but...maybe I'm wrong? or maybe it just depends on the type of doll and the person's personal preference for small/big clothes? if you have any ideas/thoughts on this, that would be really helpful! thanks! :-)

That was fun to watch! Could you put a description of what YoSD, MSD means? Thanks!
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground Год назад
Of course! They're common terms in the ball-jointed doll hobby but I know people new to the community may not be familiar with them, and they're definitely not known outside that part of the hobby :) SD is typically used to refer to 60-70cm tall dolls that are roughly 1/3 scale. MSD is around 40-45cm and roughly 1/4 scale, but usually more childlike in proportions. And YoSD is 20-30cm, roughly 1/6 human size, but much more like toddlers in the way most of them are built. It can help to think of SD as adult sizing, MSD as youth, and YoSD as baby or toddler sizing.

Hi Dear Beth, It's me Sheila again and I'm still working on drafting a pattern for a hoodie (jacket style) for my plush Mowgli doll. I'm having some trouble with the back piece having longer shoulder area than the front piece shoulder area. I have to draft my own patterns by hand and decided that because I'm going off of inspiration from this video, to just follow along with how you talk about drafting the sleeve, front piece and back piece. Is it okay if the shoulder area ends up longer on the back piece than on the front piece? Or should I extend the front shoulder area to the same length as the back shoulder area?

Hi i just found your channel and subscribed :) as i'm trying to figure out how to make doll clothes patterns, at the moment i'm struggling with a Blythe doll dress design, arm hole size and sleeves shape and size etc, being a complete novice at sewing and designing/pattern making, anyway as soon as you started dividing the measurements, i, like others have commented, got confused so I've watched the beginning of the video a few times now to try and figure out why you divided and why by half and by 4 etc and how i replicate that when making patterns, i may be stupid but I think i understand it now, correct me if i'm wrong but you divide it by the size of the pattern part your drawing, like if your drawing half of the back part you divide it by 4, i may sound stupid but i'm just trying to break it down so i can understand it and thought if i post it it may help someone else like me, figure it out too. great channel by the way and apart from me being totally clueless about maths, you make it easy to follow and learn from.
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground 5 лет назад
You're definitely not stupid! :) It took me a really long time to learn how to do any of this, partly because I'm dyscalculic so numbers are NOT my friends. Anyway, yes, you're totally right! You divide by 4 to create a piece that will go around a quarter of the body, and divide by 2 when it goes around half the body. Typically you try to simplify pieces in the way that will make them most uniform, which is why you only draw half the back piece, for example. Cutting it on a folded piece of fabric ensures that the arm holes will be exactly the same shape and size, where if you tried to draw it as a pattern piece that would go across the whole back, they might not end up even. I'm happy to try to answer any other questions if you have them. I know pattern drafting isn't very friendly to beginners!

Hi hi, also to add to my question about the armsighs and sleeves, in order to get what I have for the back and front pieces of the hoodie, I put my paper pattern on the back of Mowgli and drew a line right exactly where his shoulder seam is and did the same for the front piece. And walaa, a difference in shoulder length coming up the back and then up the front. The funny part, is that when he's sideways to me and I'm looking at his shoulder seam, it appears even right in the middle of his shoulder. I'm baffled.

Would this be a good way to make a more fitted pattern to? Looking to do a swing style dress.

You could make it fitted by doing the pattern up normally and then cutting out a copy made from paper towels or another soft, flexible material like that. Then you can pull in the sides and pin them and trim them to the new fit. Be sure to leave room for the seam allowance! But then you'll have a great close-fitting pattern.

Great video. I’m just wondering about the sleeve hole and the extension you do for you pukifee. I have a Doll Leaves 1/4 boy who is very straight torso-ed and he needs the extension, but I’m worried that 1.5cm is too much. It looks really long. For a doll that isn’t very curvy in the bust, should there be less than 1.5cm for an extension or should it be that long anyway? Thanks so much for the helpful video.

You're right that it does sometimes look really off, especially on smaller dolls. The depth can certainly be reduced if you feel it's too much, though, this tutorial should really just serve as basic guidelines! One thing you can do is draft your pattern on a paper towel, because then it's soft and flexible enough that you can fit the pattern directly to your doll as you're drawing, without cutting it out, and make any necessary adjustments based on how it fits. :)

@@LomisPlayground Thanks so much. Took me a little bit to see your reply, because it went into junk mail. Yay, technology! Anyway, I made it a little shorter on that line and then made up the pattern into a sweater for my Doll Leaves boy. It totally fits and looks great! Your tutorial is wonderfully helpful. Thank you!

What’s that measuring tape of yours called and where did you get yours from? I have been trying to search for one like that for years now 🥺

I'm assuming you mean the pink one? Mine was a freebie I got with an order of craft supplies, but as far as I know you can find them on lots of sewing supply sites by searching for retractable measuring tapes. :D

I'm sorry, but I'm having a little trouble understanding part of the sleeve instructions. What is that extra centimeter or so on the right used for?

I was wondering if you could use the same method to make a button up shirt
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground 5 лет назад
Definitely! You'd just add a seam allowance for the center front for it to open in the front, and you'd want to make a collar, but a straight strip of fabric can make a good basic one. :D

amazing O: do you think I could use this for a plush bear too? or do plushes need a different technique?
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground 5 лет назад
It should work :) Pattern drafting is generally the same no matter what you're making it for. The only thing to watch is making sure your arm holes are not too deep as plushies tend to have very broad bodies and small arms.
