Thank you for this review, Michael! I can always count on you to dig right in and share useful reviews. I can get behind the notion that Draftsmith caught more "typos" than PWA or Grammarly. I guess what I'd like to have seen was what types of errors Draftsmith found that the others didn't. For example, if it mainly found errors that stemmed more from dictation errors, the benefits of Draftsmith may not outshine the competitors for those who type out their manuscripts. Also, I wonder about the more broad-stroke types of edit suggestions, knowing that Draftsmith only checks content at the single-sentence level. Would it catch things like overused words? a few straight quotes within an entire draft using curly quotes or vice-versa (happens when pasting from a notes app or similar)? I am always up for trying a new app, but if I'm going to have to pay for it, I want to know how it measures up to the competition on multiple fronts. The AI features that catch my attention that the others don't have are things like suggestions for different reading levels, adjustments to tone and engagement, and word count trimmer. Anyway, I'd be interested in your responses to my questions. Thank you!
It caught typos that the others didn’t catch, mostly of an advanced nature. It understands more complicated grammar rules that Grammarly and ProWritingAid do not. It catches things like dropped articles, pronoun mismatches, and a few other things at a higher rate. It does not do a good job of catching formatting issues like PWA, so it lacks in that department. Yes, it definitely benefits dictators more, but I found that it has been helpful for manuscripts and/or short stories that I have typed as well the best way to see for yourself is to do a free trial and put it through its paces.

Great video. But I doubt I'll use this software since many of its features seem to be aimed at non-fiction. In my world, paying full price for something that's only half-useful for fictional writing is a huge con. And despite using ChatGPT for brainstorming/editing and having both Grammarly/ProWritingAid, one thing worries me about the use of AI. Won't our reliance on AI begin to erase our 'voice' as an author? What I mean is that most AI software today, aimed at authors, comes with a form of 'rephrase' ability. Most reviews I've seen or read about this type of software often praise this 'rephrase' function highly. But if we all use these tools, won't it just be the AI 'voice' in all fiction at the end? I use the 'rephase' ability when I feel a sentence isn't working, but I never accept the AI's suggestion without thorough consideration, which any good author should do. But as the AI improves, how many will place their trust in the AI rather than themselves in the future?
This is perfectly suitable for fiction, trust me. I’ve been using it exclusively on my current novel. I agree that features like rephrase are not terribly useful for fiction, but being able to catch typos on an advanced level is truly valuable in my opinion, especially when you consider that current grammar checkers miss a lot. This area alone of AI really excites me because of the potential to eliminate typos. But you make valid points about the future of AI. Ultimately, I believe author should use AI as an augmentation, not the end all be all. Those who adopt, and use it for the latter will be sorely disappointed, and those who use AI to become a better version of themselves, will be able to take advantage of the new future that we are rapidly moving into.
Ahhh...i hate knowing PWA is not catching so many typos. But it can't replace it since PWA has so many more features for fiction writers. Unless they have a pause payment option like Sudowrite has available i can't see many writers being able to afford that price tag. It's all starting to add up.
A couple of quick questions do you happen to know how Draftsmith might compare with Sudowrite? Second, would Draftsmith be helpful in following tense - like making sure everything flows in past tense? Thanks as always for the great information!!
Keep in mind that Draftsmith uses GPT 3.5, so it’s the same model used by ChatGPT (free), so basically, you’re using ChatGPT but with added convenience. The results are very similar. As for GPT 4, I have been unimpressed with its editing capabilities. Nothing to write home about right now. You make a good point about Claude. I haven’t tested it for AI editing yet. Thanks for suggesting that.
Been playing around with it and it is nice, i like a lot of the redraft suggestions. But I already have a Premium Pro PWA lifetime license, and so I don't have to pay anything else for it. The subscription model is just getting to be too much. $18 a month is just a *lot*. My one big complaint is that it keeps suggesting changing my smart quotes to straight quotes and I cannot figure out why.

Do you know if the language fluency enhancer is available for other languages if you write in a language other than English, or are there versions of Draftsmith available in other languages so that this feature could be used?
