The LSA in the CTS-V and ZL1 is nothing like the LS9 in the ZR1. The LS9 is leeps and bounds stronger than the LSA and is quite a bit stronger in every aspect. They do share head design and displacement but the whole rotating assembly is defferent. Even the valvetrain is different. The blower on the LSA is also a tvs 1900 (1.9L) vs the LS9 tvs 2300 (2.3L). Don't spread faulty information if you don't know please.

All true, but saying the LSA is "nothing like" the LS9 is an exaggeration. it's almost EXACTLY like the LS9, in fact it is LITERALLY the same engine, the main difference being some beefed up internals, and of course the supercharger which is external and not actually a part of the engine. Just saying, keep it in perspective. The LSA is very, very VERY much like the LS9.

Like I said, they share displacement and that's about it. Even the block itself is different as it uses different webbing for strength. Tear down an LS9 and then tear down an LSA, you will quickly see what I mean.

William Stewart A 1.3 liter wankel rotary engine is "nothing like" an LS9. An LSA is almost exactly like an LS9, since it is the same engine with some different internals. Like I said, keep it in perspective.

You're right, but Wood wasn't far off. It is the same basic engine, the only differences between the LS9 and the LSA are the supercharger (1.9L on the LSA, 2.3L on the LS9) and some of the internal components have been beefed up in the LS9. Other than that, it is the same LS3-based engine in both of them.

The CTS-V also destroyed the Ferrari around the test track, to the tune of 1.5 seconds per lap.The CTS-V does EVERYTHING better than the Ferrari, not just straight line speed.

I drove an 09 CTS-V at an autoshow, the acceleration and handling are superb. It has a lot of power if you need it but it can be very gentle if you just Potter around.

Audi RS6: - Not sold in the US - Costs the equivalent of TWICE AS MUCH as the CTS-V, $125,000 - Does the same 0-60 as the CTS-V but has AWD to help it where the CTS-V doesn't - Lower top speed than the CTS-V - Weighs more than the CTS-V - has about 100 lb-ft less torque than the CTS-V You are sadly mistaken if you think the CTS-V can't beat the RS6.

Come on...a drag race like that? It reminds me of UK's Top Gear 'staged' drag races. Yeah you can see a lot of them & a good example is 458 Italia vs Merc SLS. Watch it & you know what I mean. This one too...the drag race doesn't seem real. I do not say Cadillac CTS-V is slow but man at the start that Ferrari was like not pushing that much.

Someone posted a different clip from the same show, which includes an instant replay of the race from a different angle. In that one you can clearly see the two cars start at the same time, but the Caddy just bolts off the line, much faster than the Ferrari. More torque, I assume. Someone on that thread says 50 lb-ft more. Made a big difference at the finish.

Actually it's 11.9 @ 119, and the official 0-60 time is 3.9, and that's severely traction limited. If I have to explain what traction has to do with 0-60 times, you already lost this argument. And did you even watch this video? The CTS-V very clearly destroyed the California in a straight line, and then did it again on the test track. Are you seriously going to try to argue against actual video that proves you wrong? Really?

Hmmm, watched the grand prix at miller this year and watched both cts v's destroy mclarens, 458s, aston v12s, 911s and gtrs. The other american cars were all in the back lol cadilac took 1st and 3rd i believe.

Well first it's spelled "brakes", and second the CTS-V runs 11.9 @ 119 MPH, which is faster than most California times I've seen where the Cali's trap speed is more like 116 or 117. Third, the CTS-V has 200 lb-ft more torque than the California, AND more horsepower. Fourth, this video clearly shows the CTS-V getting an ADDITIONAL 2-3 car lengths on the California by the end of the race. When you decide to do the math, let me know.

O RLY? CTS-V Wagon and RS6 Avant: Wheelbase: CTS-V 113.4", RS6 112". Length: CTS-V 192", RS6 193" Width: CTS-V 72.5", RS6 74.4" Height: CTS-V 58", RS6 57.5" So how is the RS6 "much bigger"? The CTS-V's wheelbase is longer and it's taller. Obviously you didn't do the research before commenting, so you should consider yourself pwned.

Oh and since you're probably not capable of making the translation, I converted the CTS-V's torque into Nm for you: 747. 747 Nm. Hopefully that will make it clear why the CTS-V launched so much harder than the Ferrari.

cts-v doesn't have an LS9… it has an LSA which is the same motor in the ZL1. the LS9 is hand built and comes with forged pistons and rods, some other goodies, and also a 2.3 supercharger. the LSA is not hand built, and doesn't have forged internals besides the crank. the LSA comes with a smaller 1.9 supercharger.

The first estate supercar? Both Mercedes and Audi (and to a lesser extent BMW) have been making massively fast estates that could take on Ferrari's at least a decade before this was released. That being said, I love this car.

Watch the whole episode and you will see that they left the line at the same time. The CTS-V has 200 lb-ft more torque than the California, it can launch much harder. In addition, the CTS-V ALSO put an additional 2-3 car lengths on the California by the end of the race. Watch the video again.

Why, because of this review? Does your hatred of TG US change the facts of this review? The CTS-V IS faster than the California. That's just a fact. Hopefully that's not the reason you hate TG US, because that's like shooting the messenger.

Vernon Price Yes, because of this review and no, not because of the facts. It's because of the comparison, these two cars are by no means on the same level. The CTSV boasts a supercharged 6L V8 and about 550hp, while the California 'only' has a 4.3L V8 with 460hp. This is a considerable difference in power! Plus, they are taking an italian GT, which comes to life on the track, and put it up against an american drag strip racer, then brag about how Cadillac beat the mighty Ferrari, even though they were never on the same level! So yes, the CTSV may be more powerful but this showdown is poorly choosed. They are just testing a car a certain way so it definitely wins.

Really America? How do believe that a car with a slower acceleration and lower top speed to win. The only way is if the driver of the ferrari didn't know how to drive a car. This guy even proves that point in the video when he states the Cadillac and the Ferraris stats.

Because the CTS-V doesn't have slower acceleration. Isn't that obvious? The CTS-V has almost 200 lb-ft more torque than the Ferrari does. So with that in mind, watch the video again and understand why the CTS-V beat it off the line the way it did. And then look at the end of the drag race where the CTS-V has clearly put an additional 2-3 car lengths on the Ferrari and understand that the CTS-V makes more power than the Ferrari does, which is why it won. it's really not that hard to understand. If you need more proof, go ahead and watch the entire episode, where you will also see the CTS-V destroying the Ferrari around the top gear test track. I think the real question here is why you believe the Ferrari should have won, considering it has less power and MUCH less torque than the CTS-V.

Vernon Price after taking your advice and watching it again, I can say in full confidence the Ferrari should have won. he states that the CTS - V takes 4 seconds to get to 60 and has a top speed of 175 mp/h which isn't bad. But he also states that the Ferrari takes 3.8 seconds to get to 60 and has a top speed of 193 mp/h. a bit more research puts everything in favour of the Ferrari except for this show which quite obviously prefer the Cadillac, giving them a motive to make it win. quite simply I think you should be the one to watch this again and maybe get it through your head that the Ferrari should have been the victor of the race

nick michel GM says the CTS-V does 0-60 in 3.9, and here's the kicker - that is severely traction limited. The CTS-V has so much torque (200 lb-ft more than the Ferrari) that it has issues putting it all to the ground. With drag slicks on the CTS-V can do a 3.5 second 0-60. The top speed of the auto is 175 because it's LIMITED to 175. The top speed of the manual is 191. If you had done the research you would have learned that the CTS-V has VASTLY more torque and more power than the Ferrari, and people have been getting 11.7 @ 120 mph in completely bone stock CTS-Vs. There is nothing about any of those facts that suggests the Ferrari was going to win this. Not only that, the CTS-V beat the Ferrari around the top gear test track too. maybe you should get it through your head that the Ferrari lost, and deal with the fact that the Ferrari is slower and handles worse than the CTS-V.

Then watch the whole episode. It wasn't just a drag race, they handed both cars over to the Stig, who drove them around the top gear test track. The CTS-V kicked the Ferrari's ass on the track, too. It's amazing how people still don't understand how well the CTS-V handles. It was developed on the Nurburgring, the CTS-V broke the world record for the fastest 4 door sedan on the Nurburgring. This Ferrari never had a chance.

If the4 Ferrari had won would you be claiming it was a commercial for Ferrari? No of course not because you're a hypocrite. The simple fact is that the CTS-V is faster and handles better than the Ferrari, while costing 4 times less money. Do you have a problem with reality, is that what the problem is here? You can see both the CTSV and the California do their thing in other tests, so you don't have to swallow or reject the results here. The thing about these latter day Caddies, beyond or before performance, is that they are special - they don't look like anything else. To my eyes the CTSV would nearly be a work of art if it weren't for that kind of trashy brake light in the center of the trunk lid. Every time I see one of those I want to smash it.

From the M5 Wikipedia page: De-restricted the E39 M5 has a widely accepted top speed of 300 km/h (186 mph). From the CTS-V wikipedia page: Cadillac CTS-V´s top speed is 198 mph (319 KPH), which makes this car the world's fastest production sedan. (in 2009)

@Alfonso Dominguez, neither of those cars are sold in the US, both of them cost more than $50k more than the CTS-V, and they're not faster either. For example, the CTS-V has a higher top speed than the RS6 Avant.

Caddy has more accessable power more of the time, in addition, its supercharged so it should be seriously tourqy, more than enough to beat a Ferrari over the quarter mile.

sorry to revive an old thread here but.... nope. the cadillac of this generation was faster than every car in its class of that generation (e60 m5, for example). now the f10 series m5 was faster, but of course, that was a refresh. the new cts-v is faster than all bmw and mercedes cars on sale. go figure.

In regards to the base price: though the cadillac lost, it is almost half the price of the mercedes. What that means is you essentially have another 50k to drop into the cadillac - which will at that point make it a drag machine - and still put you below the price of the mercedes.

If you're wanting to make this about cost, why don't we throw the 2013 gt500 vs the 2013 cts-v? The GT500 with the electronics package, SVT Track pack, the Rapid Spec SVT performance pack, and shaker audio system... Along with driver and passenger heated seats or recaro racing seats and the glass roof... All costs about 2 grand less than the CTS-V base price. I never said the CTS-v didn't handle well, I was talking about how it "feels." Oh yes, and the GT500 has the most powerful production V8.

@vernon price you got a good point about the e36, everyone in the comments is talking about staright line speed mostly and in the video he compares the cts to the and e63 of previous years, a platform thats years old the new one is producing 0-60 mid 3s idk how they drive and as for the ferrari i mean its a ferrari in my town i see Vs everywhere rarely a ferrari you dont buy these cars for just speed(unless there only use is for the track) status is another reason. Just my opinion. Im a european car fan but im born and raised in america i drive americann cars

The problem with using 0-60 times is that they are completely, 100% dependent on traction. AWD cars will ALWAYS have better 0-60 times than RWD cars, given roughly similar power to weight ratios, gearing etc. That's why 0-60 is a terrible measurement to use to judge how fast a car is. The CTS-V has 551 lb-ft of torque going to the rear wheels. I get wheelspin in 2nd gear, sometimes I can't even get traction until I GET to 60 mph. A 4 second 0-60 time in this car is NOT indicative of how fast it is. I looks reasonably impressive, but it's severely traction-limited. You put drag slicks on the CTS-V and launch it hard with no wheelspin or a tiny bit of wheelspin and you will see mid 3 second 0-60 times. And that's why the new E63's 0-60 times are so improved over the old model. AWD. It's not really any faster, and the power numbers are still very close to the CTS-V, and it still weighs more than the CTS-V. The new E63 S wagon weighs 4700 lbs! And according to the reviews I've read about the new E63, it's just not as balanced or as sharp as even the last one, and the last one wasn't quite as good as the CTS-V.

Oh, no. I Love the CTS Wagon and think the California was a substandard effort by Ferrari. The New CTS is also quite the package, I hear. But I just can't bear this version of Top Gear. It lacks the intangibles, spicy personalities and authenticity of the original. Then again, it's not the original.

GM did something ballsy yet again when they made the CTS-V, they just took it a step further with the Wagon. Still proof that if you put a big enough engine into a brick that you can make a brick fly. As for the RS6, yeah it's nice, it's refined, but it's over priced and we can't get them in the states so the CTS-V still gets my vote.

I sat in a CTS-V wagon when they came out, or shortly after, at a car show and the biggest complaint I have is that the cup holders are only like 1 inch deep. How is America supposed to hold their large McDonalds soft drinks or their large Dunkin Donuts coffee, while sliding sideways through an intersection, with only 1 inch of cup holder.

And what's your excuse for the CTS-V beating the shit out of the Ferrari on the top gear test track? Both cars were driven by the stig, the CTS-V was 1.5 seconds a lap faster. You are in denial. The CTS-V is a higher performance car than the California, by a significant margin, in every measurable way. You haven't driven a CTS-V or you would know that already.

The diff doesn't "cope", the diff simply makes sure power is applies to both rear wheels instead of just one of them. It's up to the computer to limit power, which is what it does in the Ferrari AND the CTS-V if you leave TC on. The point you seem to be missing here is that the CTS-V has so much torque that it goes beyond the tires' ability to stick to the ground. You can either limit the power via TC or you can turn TC off and get wheelspin. The Cali doesn't have enough torque to be a problem.
