The waste water can contaminate other drinking water and because of the pressure used to get at the oil or natural gas, it causes earthquakes in places that have stable tectonic plates. Meaning earthquakes aren't commonly had there. Honestly just using lead diesel fuel is better tbh. Edit: I take it back lead fuel is also dangerous too for mental development and science shows that because we use less lead fuel crime and aggression levels have gone down. Either way ethanol might be the best substitute until EV's get easier to use.
