The thing that I like about this quest is that no matter what you choose there's a positive outcome and Cole ends up happy either way.

RoyalGuard503 I feel the same way. I absolutely adore Cole and hate it when he's upset. He's a rarity in that his entire existence is completely benevolent. I love that.

@@full-timeanimeman4341 That is what scared me; it was like the spirit had finally had taken possession of Cole when he had done that. The Spirit of Compassion wiped Cole's memory clean, which made him like the tranquil mages. In a strange turn of events, it now makes Cole an abomination. So I agree with Varric now.

You know, before the game came out I joked about Cole being an excellent wingman because of his abilities... I didn't expect it to become canon. What's interesting though, is that Cole is happy either way, which makes you think... maybe it's just being on a set path, knowing what he wants to become that makes him happy more than anything?

On the fun side, cole spirit looks more like a gosip spirit than a compasion one xD, there should be a joke of it in-game

People seem to get so caught up in the idea that Cole 'wants to be a person'. I don't really see evidence of this... ever. All Cole EVER seems to want is to help. Varric claims that he came into this world to be a person... but Cole said himself that he came through because he WANTED TO HELP the 'apostate Cole'. Solas claims that a spirit of compassion is fragile when it's efforts are apparently wasted. Much as it pains me to say it, Solas is right. The spirit's failure to help the apostate changed him... so he became what the apostate wanted... A Cole without magical power. "A spirit doesn't work through emotions, it embodies them." Think about who Cole is... REALLY is. He wants to help people, more than anything else, and as a human, he can't purely do that. Have you heard his party banter? More often than not, he stresses your companions with their own troublesome memories. If you make Cole more human, by nature of humanity, he can't always get it right, and in that, he becomes capable of hurting someone, and he loses the powers that allow people to 'forget'. That much is evident in that one conversation with the woman where he attempts to comfort her, then uses the 'wrong words' and makes her forget to try again. Sure, humanity grants him 'understanding'... but does Cole really ever ASK for understanding? He JUST wants to help. Sure, human Cole can have more impact on every person, but spirit Cole can have fleeting impacts on so many more. Maybe WE as people think granting a spirit a chance to embrace humanity is the best choice, and something that he 'deserves', but in reality, it's not something he directly asked for. Most people imagine making Cole a human gives him a more 'fulfilling' life, but all along, helping others was all the 'fulfillment' Cole ever claims to need.

HackersSun My original instinct was to make him human, to be completely honest. I think naturally, everyone's instinctually pulled to do that. BUT! I liked his Spirit card more. xD So I debated with myself over it... eventually I actually ended up believing that spirit Cole makes more sense.

+Chii4453 100000% In my mind Varrics choice is selfish, he THINKS Cole wants that, that's it for his own good it's not, no matter how much People hate Solas, he wouldn't harm a spirit like that, and i'm gonna trust *SPOOILERS* an Elven God over a dwarf that likes friends, Child of the stone indeed, and my KE mage completely agreed with Solas on this choice, plus I found the ending for cole as spirit (Trespasser DLC) way better and he Thanks you for leting him be himself. Cole is a spirit, he isn't human and doesn't want to be.

Sounds like: spirit = more happiness, more power, less emotions --- human = less happiness, less power, more personal growth, more emotions. (By emotions I mean variety of emotions, which spirits are less capable of. They feel something, but it is much more narrow, even if stronger than how most humans feel it.) Cole will be a happier being as a spirit (especially as Compassion, after all), but may end up having an overall happier *life* as a human, as long as he stays on Thedas. Either way, all he needed was personal resolution. To have some help in deciding whether to be more defined by what he is, or what he does (or rather aspects of both). I can RP that going Spirit gives him more spiritual power, while going Human gives him more Rogue power (though it isn't like it is reflected in mechanics).

Man, this quest was a mind messer for me. Gone back & forth between the choices for a long while before settling on more human, kept asking myself "Why is this better? Why do you feel this is right?" until I exhausted all of my feelings on both of the choices and felt I was truly doing the right thing. Man, this was a tough choice, I can't remember any that plagued me this much. :p What I think truly changed my mind is the nature of Cole's help of being unseen and forgotten. It unnervingly reminds of mind-rape. Sure, from an objective standpoint it is for good, but the people he gives the ideas to think it's themselves, while it's another being guiding their fate, even if it's something they want. Can't help but feel they should go through the troubles for their happiness, just as Cole as a human would while trying to help others feeling less effective. Who knows, they might even detest the help if they ever were to find out the idea wasn't theirs in the first place, I know I would feel uneasy knowing my fate was manipulated by another being, even if it was for my own good. The whole trying again if he messes up while wiping someone of their memory feels somehow morally wrong too. Dunno, I remembered the first time I got introduced to Cole's powers when I got this quest and this affected my choice in the matter a great deal. Also, Cole feels like he's stuck on a loop, like a robot programmed for other people's feelings when he's a spirit. Being humanlike may feel more selfish, but staying a spirit seems so sad to me because he will never be given credit, never remembered, even if he's okay with that. He's extraordinary and no one will ever know. Well that was some talking myself to accepting my choice I assume. :p Well I could go on about how being Spirit-like has a lot of admirable qualities to it too but it's already long enough, so I'll end it here. Needless to say good job Bioware for making such a quest. :p

For me this was also one of the most difficult decisions in game, I replayed it maybe 5 times before deciding, and I went Spirit in my first playthrough because Cole just seemed happier this way (when in Val Royeaux), but Spirit Cole final scene changed my mind. In this scene he actually makes himself forget Cole, this is just too much, whereas in his final scene as Human he's grateful. Come to think of it, I should probably upload 2 versions of this final talk.
@Namirast
@Namirast 9 лет назад
Yeah, I would love to see if there are any extra special scenes according to the path you chose other than these two. :) And indeed, making him forget his past... is that really a good thing? He says he's happy to let go, it makes him better suited to help people but I always get that nagging feeling of not doing something right. :S But yeah, either way, you feel like you make Cole lose something important to his identity, duh. :/

FluffyNinjaLlama Thanks, I had used the wrong words to look them up I think, couldn't find anything. ^_^ Watching those scenes the spirit scene does have that sense of uneasiness about it, even your character freaks out a little. He makes himself forget because he feels plagued by what happened, which means that as a spirit he's not happy as he says.:S Yup, I'm gonna agree and say that remembering your past and growing certainly seems a better way.. My poor baby Cole. :(

This was a tough choice, they both were right but the way cole wanted to kill that man...his anger...it was unsettling mostly because it was not this spirit that suffered...it was the real cole...the spirit merely took his appearance out his anger...would you encourage that anger? We always have the audacity to change what doesn't suit us, but some things shouldn't be changed, especially spirits, we should understand them yes, but we should never change what they truly are. So i made him a spirit, he seemed happy.

I love Cole's voice actor here... the rage and anger in his voice from his normal, spirit-y voice made me a little worried for him. Also *spoilers* The thing Varric said about Solas not being 'human' made me snicker. Oh if ya only knew, Varric...
@Andrea_404
@Andrea_404 9 лет назад
First it was easy enough for me, but reading the comments it becomes much more nuanced. When I think I'm convinced, I find another one which sways me in the opposite direction...I've no idea if it's positive or negative. Depends on situations, I guess. Anyway it's good to see people are seeing the pros and contras in every options. It feels safer to argue it knowing both choices, but in real life i'd definitely choose spirit, because I wouldn't want him to kill that man; I would be worried that even if he could have his vengeance, it would later start a little but dangerous, growing darkness in him which he cannot handle - after all, he's a being of compassion. Who knows how much corruption would that do to his essence? I know it's easy to release him on the templar when Cole tells his story, but revealing the man's own memories teaches us that we shouldn't rush with decisions like that. There's one thing which especially makes me choose the spirit path; humans are forever struggling not only to fulfill a purpose, but even to find one. Cole can fulfill his if we let him, and seeing him to manage it so confidently is uplifting; a gift rare among non-spirit creatures. I personally just can't take that away from him. Also, I felt very strong about him thanking me I accepted his true nature. People already want to change too much things they don't understand. And let's not forget that we can only observe this through a human's eye. We could never know what is it to be like a spirit. Maybe choosing spirit seems to be wrong and less joyful to some, but if we could experience it, maybe we would also like to be able to choose to become one. Either way, knowing the human storyline, I like that too. Cole seems to be happy in both, differently.

While Spirit interests me, I think I'll be going Human. I think he deserves to help others, sure, but I think he can do that enough as Human and he moreso deserves to have the connection to other mortals that he so much desired after meeting Rhys.

i chose to make him more human, but the scene with the templar & when you choose to make him more spirit during his personal quest is such a great scene and heart-aching. it feels bittersweet and the quiet background music, dialogue, and cole's facial expressions are so good. overall such a good personal quest; cole's character arc is amazing.

I’m like six years late to this fandom but I decided to go with letting him become more like a spirit. It’s a pretty deep philosophical situation, but overall I decided that I just couldn’t bring myself to subject a being so unique and special to the human condition. He seemed happier, and more himself overall, when choosing this option.

With Cole being happy with either outcome, this decision stems on one thing: Do you want the bard to go into a relationship with a human-like spirit or do you want the bard to go into a relationship with Krem? Krem's a doll ... so I choose Spirit Cole.

I choose Human Cole, simply because like Varric said; “They need to remember and learn... him too”. Pain will never stop if ppl don’t know when they do wrong, if they can’t learn to change and be better, there is no point.

I thought so also, but then later on you discover becoming more of a spirit was not a good choice for Cole. My next game I will make him more human. The fact that a Spirit can become more than what they are is a huge leap. To be able to have complex thoughts beyond an emotional state or just compassion/hunger/pride/justice/faith etch.

Imperius Because he actually loses who he is as a Spirit. He "forgets' Cole and Solas makes Cole "forget" all he's learned about him as a Spirit. If Cole can go from being a Spirit to a Human, it's shows that Spirits CAN be MORE than what they are...

I don't think this a grey choice really, spirit cole is way more compassionate, in a dialogue he says it's okay when he kills demons or other bad things from the fade, but still feels wrong and has to force himself to harm people etc. because they can still change. As a human he just accepts it, he becomes an assassin. To some of you Solas may sound hypocritical here, but he's right, and I think (in this instance) I will trust a decade or more elven God to have more info about such things than a dwarf and my dumb inquisitor (except my mage inquisitors who agree with Solas here). Spirit cole is way better, he's so depressed as a human like it's not what he's supposed to be (because he isn't, just like Solas said) I felt like I made him tranquil as a human really, kinda ironic considering it should give him MORE emotion lol, but he felt dead to me. A remark on him forgetting Cole, it's because he should forget, that's how he does more good, he doesn't have prejudices or logic, or holds suffering, it's compassion, (again just like.. Solas said)

Thank you for saying that. Nightmare took their fear, gorged himself on it, and became twisted. By Cole NOT taking it in - the foreign anger from human Cole that he calls "shackles - he keeps himself uncorrupted as a spirit. Having part of human Cole in him is the first step to becomingly slowly corrupted, see: Nightmare, Anders & Justice. You set him free. Indeed, he tells you as much: "the shackles are gone."
@FlorentiusIV

There is no real good or bad here.. Just how you view things. We're all human so at first most of us think becoming a human is what will make him more happy but we think this because we know what it is like being human.. But we don't know what it is like being a spirit.. We choose to make him human because that seems to most safe for us.. But is it really right to change a beings nature because it feels to be the right thing to do.. For you? Varric believes being human makes you more happy then being a spirit.. While Solas thinks being a spirit with a clear purpose would make him more happy for there is no true way for him to get hurt and he would stay true to himself(feelings-wise anyway). I personally think making him human is the more selfish choice because most people pick that because they think it is sad how Cole is when he is a spirit. Cole himself isn't but YOU are feeling sorry for him... Anyway.. Cole just needed direction, he couldn't make a proper choice himself. He will be happy either way.. Just with different reasons and it will greatly impact his future for sure.

I made Cole more spirit mainly because it was so weird seeing him getting into a relationship in trespasser lol plus it's not up to me to change who he is. @blarg2429
@blarg2429 7 лет назад
"It's not up to me to change who he is." True enough, but he had already previously changed himself of his own free will. Technically, the choice which doesn't involve presuming to change him is the one not showcased in this video. Have you seen the video which covers that possibility? If not, I think you might get something out of it. Of course, both choices are ultimately valid; I just thought it was interesting that a bit of your rhetoric seemed to point in a direction you didn't intend it to. Regarding my own preference for the other option: sadder but wiser. Better able to deal with life's complexities rather than continually forgetting things and thus continually tampering with his own identity in ways that may prevent personal growth alongside preventing the bitterness he seeks to prevent in himself. Regardless of the decision his core nature as a spirit of compassion remains, so letting him be that _and_ other things rather than allowing him to restrict himself to a very narrow scope struck me as better.

I chose this because the last time I encouraged a spirit to embrace and work through its newfound feelings and emotions and become "more human", in a way, it did not turn out great (Justice) and I could not and would not do that to Cole, especially not when he never even asked you to to or expressed any interest in changing. Also, it bugs me when people say making him human is better because then he can form bonds. There are upsides to making him human, yes, but that is not one of them. Spirit Cole is just as much a friend to my Inquisitor as human Cole is to yours, him being a spirit does not make him incapable of friendship. He was a spirit when he befriended Rhys, even if he didn't know it, and he was a spirit when he told me he's happy I didn't turn away like Rhys did and that I accept him for what he is. Because he's my friend. And we already knew spirits can have friends, Solas is friends with spirits.

One of the hardest decisions in the game, because there's no right or wrong choice. From a human perspective, it feels more 'right' to live with the wrong that has been done to you. It also gives Cole an opportunity to explore a new life. On the other hand, spirit is what he really is and judging what feels 'right' and 'happy' by human standards doesn't cut it here. Solas and Varric make the whole quest even more of a headache lol. Both are prejudiced. Varric has a limited mortal's view about happiness, and Solas **spoilers** wishes to return to a world of spirits/possibly to being a spirit, or a similar being, himself (Cole even tells him not to be jealous of him for being a spirit during their banter). I think that's why Cole asks for *your* opinion, because he can see into their hearts and knows they are projecting their own wishes on him, while you will try to decide with his best interests at heart
@GirlSpartan117
@GirlSpartan117 8 лет назад
I think he's better as a human. As a human, he's able to connect to the people he's helping more. Also, I think he makes the people he helps feel better about the world since they know there is a person out there helping to relieve others' pain. His help as a human will stick in their minds and it'll be a plesant memory to look back on if they ever feel down again. His interactions with them may even become a source of inspiration for people to help their fellow (wo)man. Spirit Cole can't inspire any of those feelings which is why I think Human Cole is better in the long run.
@RainbowEssence-c3w
@RainbowEssence-c3w 3 года назад
Both outcomes have their pros and cons, but in either case Cole seems to be happier and is no longer worried about being controlled and turned against others. It is rather sad though how he leaves at the end of Inquisition, and I think he always makes the Inquisitor forget. Sadly I don't think there is any way to get around this, though correct me if I'm wrong. I think the reason many players think making Cole more human is the better choice is because we, as human beings, are biased. We know no other way of life, and we're generally raised to believe that being human, being alive, is a wonderful thing. And it is, of course, but that doesn't mean that being human is the greatest thing in the world or the only path to happiness. We humans often like to believe that we are superior to all other lifeforms but whether or not that is really true is up for debate lol. Currently we have not encountered any extraterrestrials or other sapient species, so we humans are alone in our sapience and have no other sapient lifeforms to compare ourselves to. And animals and plants, of course, cannot talk so we have no way of knowing what it is really like to be, say, a bird or a fish. But birds don't wish they were human, or at least I don't think they do. Birds are perfectly happy (or at the very least content) being birds. Likewise, a fish doesn't wish to be anything other than a fish. I think we humans are the only animals that ever fantasize about being anything other than ourselves, and this is due to our sentience and imagination.
@xohlic

If you make him,'more human' he can no longer take the pain 'away' from others with is sad. In contrast, making him more spirit like he takes the pain of others and shoulders it all on his own,because he is a spirit of compassion.

Either you help Cole fulfill his purpose of being 100% compassionate or to allow him to feel other emotions as well. I think the Human Route should be done if you want Cole to retain his original personality and to develop it further, both good and bad, because humans are imperfect and are not always good. The Spirit Route should be done if you want Cole to rediscover his purpose, for the better. For himself and for other people, but not necessarily for the Inquisitor, because he loses his original personality.

In real life your life isn't just your own it also belongs to all the people you leave an impression on, a big part of coles story is about the effect we have as people on everyone around us. This is evident in the spirit choice when varric says "He could have been a person" his tone is sadder then when he is just pondering possibilities varric feels like he lost a friend. This is also further clarified if you make him more human and Cole says "they know a person wants them to hurt less" when he talks about people not forgetting him. The sadness in this ending is that varic lost a friend, and now blackwall and iron bull won't remember the weird kid with good intentions and Dorian won't remember the confused boy who awkwardly tried to help people around him, Cassandra won't remember the child who was abused by people who where put in power to be a symbol of righteousness who taught her about staying vigilant against the abuse of power. They will most likely forget him and the countless people would have came across him will never have the personal growth that comes from meeting a new person and for a brief moment seeing the world through their eyes.

AnticAgnostic For some prattling about logic you don't seem to have your facts straight. Cole is not a spirit in a dead body he is a spirit that made his own body. Cole didn't posses the mages body. He created it himself whole clothe from wanting so badly to help the original Cole. I wouldn't bother correcting you, but the elitism of that comment nearly gave me a migraine.

I thought it was interesting that Varric and Solas were like Cole's big brothers. They wanted to help him in the own way. Also note that Cole doesn't really know what he wants and is conflicted on whether staying a spirit or becoming more human. It's a huge grey area in this regard with him, neither choice is exactly right or wrong. Ultimately, it's up to Cole. That's how I see it, at least.

@svidianon9925

It's not that he wanted to "become" more human. He wanted to help. That's all he wanted. It's what makes him happy, and he can do that better as a spirit, in my opinion. His abilities are more...fine tuned, if you will. He came into the world looking like a human, not because he wanted to be one, but because it would "help." If he's more human, he loses some of his ability to help, and then might accidently end up hurting that person, thus losing his purpose as a spirit (Compassion), and thus making up a lot less happy. Making people forget the mistakes and trying again is what makes Cole happiest.

I never look up spoilers but I actually had to in this case cause I couldnt decide. Hell even after I watched the outcomes of both I still sat there thinking for about 10min because I wasnt sure which was "better." I ended up choosing Spirit cause he seems more amusing this way.

It is a real dilemma because he is happy either way but what is truly better? Him being a helpful spirit is nice since he is helping everyone even with the small problems as a spirit but in a way that is counter intuitive cause for people to advance to be more in a manner of speaking they must face these problems themselves not let someone else solve it for them but if he is more human he to will face the trials to be more and well you get where i'm going with this.

I wouldn't have a problem with either decision if it weren't for 2 people: Varric and Solas. If it was just the Inquisitor and Cole, the decision to make him either or would probably be much easier without two opposing people also arguing on top of that. It's like in this video: make Cole more spirit-like and Varric says "he could have been human." God, that sentence right there really stuck a knife in my gut like I had make the wrong choice. The same if you made him more human, Solas disapproves (though he's really a wolf spirit god so who cares what he thinks :P....)

After different gameplay I decided to make him spirit because I think varric and solas are both wrong. Cole isn't not human, so the usual way aren't for him. But why I think solas is also wrong? Witerfang or lady of forest from origins. Solas said spirit are people but he doesn't think they can change which it is human quality or they have short memories. Lady od forest denied that true, she was a spirit without motivation or feelings until she was turned in werewolf for carried revenge. With time she understood and growing up like a person and started to help the werewolf. She changed!! From emotionless spirit, demon of revenge and probably justice/mercy. So I usually let Cole keep memories of true Cole and after made his mission and keeping him like a spirit. Spirits can change!! Having more emotional or memories don't made them less spirit

Okay well, this there are a lot of good personal opinions posted here, I might as well add my own. Personally, I chose to make Cole more human. I don't think it was for selfish reasons, I just tried to look at the bigger picture. Cole is a very special case, a spirit that assumed a human form without the need to possess someone for it. We know spirits don't usually willingly go through the veil from the fade they get pulled through it into a world that's confusing to them. That's the thing, spirits find the "real" world confusing, just like the inquisitor and his/her companions [spoiler] found the Fade confusing when they got stuck into it. That tells me spirits belong in the fade just like humans/dwarves/elves/qunaris belong in the real world. However, what if other spirits like Cole got the to real world and found they wanted to stay, but also didn't want to be bound to mage for possibly nefarious purposes? The amulet we got Cole is a relic, there probably aren't many left and no telling if there will ever be new ones made. These spirits following Cole's foot steps would be vulnerable, UNLESS Cole really manages to become more human, make it so the amulets aren't needed anymore, that would mean other spirits could become more human too. And that's a step closer to making the relations between spirits and the inhabitants of the real world more tolerable. Sure being human isn't all fun and games, and that means spirits will have to grow and learn from their pain , sometimes on their own, just like real humans do. I feel like that's just part of what living out of the Fade means. "When in Rome, do as the Roman's do." and all that. The way I handled the Inquisition was intending to keep working to make the world better even after the whole "rifts & corypheus" business was done, if that implies trying to look at the bigger picture and work for the greater good in the long run, well so be it, even if Sera hates me for it. =P However if you do want my selfish personal opinion, I did found kind of creepy how his "invasion of privacy but not really cause you won't even remember I was here" gimmick went into overdrive when you make him more spirit like.

"The pain is gone, out of my mind. I can't feel it anymore. No stinging in the back of my head. But I can see it. I can see their faces, their emotions. Hear their words ringing in my ears. I want to help, but if I mess up they'll remember. I could hurt them more, no matter my intentions.That girl is still unwell. I don't like mistakes. That's why I need them to forget. I need to help them. I need to do it right." I tried to put myself in Cole's shoes. These are the thoughts I had. I chose spirit, in the end, because it's what he is and what he enjoys being. Forcing him to become human ... I don't know. It's like forcing a man to be a woman, or a black person to become a white person. It's just not who they are, and there's no reason to change them. Cole is young, vulnerable, confused, naive, and scared. Everyone struggles with their identity at that age. Even spirits, it would seem. I didn't want to risk making him become something he might regret. He could become dangerous, but so can mages. So can anyone. As a spirit, he can help people, just like he wants. As a human, he can _possibly_ help people. He will not become human by my hand.

I am somewhat bemused that so many people DIDN'T want to kill the guy who abandoned a helpless victim to starve to death in a dungeon, a very slow and ugly death, and who then proceeded to conceal that his victim ever existed. I mean...seriously? We have to pass judgement on the Mayor of Crestwood, who was in a genuine 'damned whatever I do' situation, and yet we can't get justice for the original Cole's murder? I mean, ok, it might be bad for Cole to do it himself, but can we at least have a 'sit in judgement' quest as a follow-up? I'm also kind of side-eying Varric's 'spirit' versus 'person' dividing line.

Right?? Like yes, Solas is right, we obviously can't encourage Cole the spirit of compassion (or semi human former spirit, depending) to start killing people out of anger and vengeance, I get that. But why can't I do it? I'm already human, a bit of vengeance isn't going to corrupt me. Let it be a war table mission option to find the guy and judge him (maybe not kill him, I'd want to knoe more about the situation first) and just not tell Cole about it.

I don't think he ever wanted to be human. It was a mistake on his part, trying to heal the real Cole's pain by creating a human Cole that was not a mage. In the end, it seems that neither option is wrong. Wanting him to have friends and experience a richer/wholer mortal life seems kind of like pressing your own values onto him. You want him to have these things because you are trying to view or shape him into your own image. Things that seem important and integral to our existence doesn't necessarily hold the same weight to a spirit of the Fade.

I can never make Cole more spirit-like. That just feeds into Solas' belief and knowledge and robs Cole of a happier life. He will always be plagued by the sadness of others while Human Cole is able to better understand and connect to everyone because he's real. Make him a spirit and not only do you give that damned Elf credence and keep things in their natural order.. But you also displace Cole from the world he so desperately wants to be in. He'll always be an outsider and he deserves better. Besides, Human Cole is much better character development.

Cole is just as happy as a human version. Not only that, but he's finally learned the lesson Rhys meant to teach him. A very subtle point of Cole as a character is that even though he helps, he doesn't take care of himself. As a spirit, he'll always be afraid of being seen and known. His happiness is dependent on others and, frankly, he's much more fragile. And nothing says that Cole can't become a human. Varric proved just as correct as Solas and, frankly, he's set him on a better path. Human Cole can still help but he also understands that he can't just help others. He has to grow as well.
