What makes Baby's concept interesting? The backstory of the Tuffles What makes SSJ4 stand out in a positive way? That it goes back to what defined the Saiyans What makes The Shadow Dragons interesting? That it's an effort of going full circle with its story starting and ending with the Dragon balls What makes the ending have an emotional weight? EVERYTHING THAT CAME BEFORE. GT's positives, for the most part, ONLY WORK when you actually try to connect it with what came before. GT doesn't make GT special, DB/DBZ make GT special.
So, Pan is a microcosm of GT as a whole? Desperately trying to be taken seriously by what came before, utterly failing to deliver any of what it tried to promise, and only mattering (as little as it does) because of its lineage?
I will never forget watching DBZ with my brothers for the first time on Toonami at the end of the Freeza saga and the voiceover announcer guy saying "Will Goku live? Next episode: Goku Lives!" We nearly died laughing. Who decided those episode titles!? Talk about spoilers. 😂

This show would've been served so well by having the first arc be Pan, Uub, and Piccolo searching for the Dragonballs to fix Goku after he was turned back into a kid- and I mean literally turned back into DB Goku from the Pilaf Arc. It could've been so funny to have Kid Goku react to the Z era characters like Vegeta while Grandpa Piccolo chaperones Earth's strongest teenagers around the galaxy. Can you imagine if the endgame if Goku had stayed on Earth? Goku goes from being a kid to a Baby!

Baby was a wasted opportunity, as were the dark dragons. One detail i'll compliment: their Capsule Corp. spaceship looks like it borrowed features from Kami's spaceship. Considering how advanced Kami's ship was, that makes a lot of sense.
So I've made peace with that fact that Kaiser is a bit of an anime elitest, but don't dismiss a dub as "just an adaptation". Unless you speak fluent Japanese, you're always going to get an "adaptation", even in subs.
Yes, thank you. I'm glad to see someone else finally express this. The only original source is the Japanese manga. ANYTHING else is an adaptation. (I know that doesn't exactly apply to GT specifically, but still.)
Kinda reminds me of how there was a mistranslation in the manga version of super hero where 18 had suspicions of Krillin not being faithful when in reality the line was about her wanting to have some family time because Krillin was so busy or something along those lines. non japanese speakers/readers are at the mercy of translators
There's degrees though. For people to say that the dub is better - which by most accounts, it is in at least some areas - it needs to have made significant enough changes to differentiate itself. The manga will be closer than the anime, the translated book closer than the movie, etc. I don't read Chinese but reading a translated copy of Journey to the West is going to be closer to the source than watching a TV series based on it.
GT's dub however is an adaptation by a different means because this was still in the era when Funimation really tinkered with scripts and such to make dubs cater to audiences and what TV networks were looking for. GT's dub as a result is basically GT through the lens of 2000s in how it tries to make the show seem cooler and more badass than it is.
Honestly i would love to see Scott and Lani read the original Manga and review it together, seeing Lanis thoughts on it when comapred to the anime series would be really cool and a nice way to celebrate the thing that jumpstarted wverything

Since this is the GT ending...I do want to give my ideas on a re-write of GT as it is something I thought off watching this. First, Goku not becoming a child is an option and to mainly build up Pan more, show that it feels like they are looking down on her because she is weaker, when really, she hasn't been in any serious fights and doesn't know the dangers and that has a minor ego to her that we see slowly break down as the series goes on. A minor moment where we see shots of Pan and Bra, that comes after Goku asking how come Pan doesn't want to see Bra, Pan saying Bra wasn't a fighter, and we get a scene going on that Trunks explains that Pan and Bra were friends but had a falling out when we cut to Bra going Super Saiyan, Trunks saying that Pan felt insecure since she trained and never transformed while Bra who doesn't train could easily achieve it. And we see Pan's growth from a more overconfident and arrogant character into a reliable fighter, watching as she stands on her own two feet shoulder to shoulder with the other Z-Fighters. Second, the beginning, with Goku, Trunks, and Pan traveling across space, we see them encounter movie villains and that is the minor threats leading up to the Tuffles and Baby. Seeing Cooler trying to reform the Empire, Lord Slug hunting Dragon Balls, Turles raiding the team as a mercenary, getting the Dragon Ball from Hirudegarn, and a fight with Bojack. Third, is the Baby Arc, having this for the plan. Baby takes over the earth, Piccolo is believed to be dead as Baby Vegeta spreads his control. Goku falls to Baby Vegeta as Uub steps up, but isn't a match for Baby Vegeta and the Tuffle Saiyans, leading to the birth of Majuub and he owns Baby Vegeta, where Baby Vegeta goes Super Saiyan 3 and defeats Majuub. We see Goku return as a Super Saiyan 4 with the fight happening the same way. Pan and Kibito Kai trying to help but are stopped by Gohan and Gotenks, where Majuub and Piccolo show up to prevent them from helping Baby Vegeta, and events happen the same. Fourth is Super 17, where it tends to be the same, but in Hell, the reason they escaped was the birth of Janemba, which Goku, Piccolo and Pikkon fight as Majuub and Vegeta battle Super 17, leading to the death of Gohan, Krillin, and 18. This way, Majuub and Vegeta get a win while Goku does as well. Fifth is the Shadow Dragons, where each dragon range in strength, but their threat is the elemental powers they possess, going more on that for destroying the world. Goku, Trunks, Goten, Pan, and Majuub heading out to fight and defeat the dragons. During their encounters, they have their own scenes with other characters. Trunks gets help from Tien as an Easter Egg to the Bojack movie fight, Master Roshi and Bra help Pan, Goten gets Yamcha to kind of play-off Goten getting dating advice from Yamcha, and Chiaotzu helping Majuub. We see Majuub getting angry in his fight, unable to hit his Shadow Dragon, showing more of an Evil Buu side that he regains with help from Buu, and with his psychic powers, Chiaotzu helps Majuub to defeat the dragon. Now, the big one with Pan. We see Pan struggling, getting mad that Roshi and Bra are helping her, but it is Roshi who yells at her, telling Pan that she is her own worst enemy, that the adults think highly of her and it is herself that is the one saying she is weaker and needs saving, that Pan herself is the only one saying she isn't good enough. Doing something like that to have Pan realize that her overconfidence and arrogance was because she felt like she wasn't good enough. And this is her point of turning Super Saiyan, and winning her fight. Changing Ice and Nova fights would be an injustice with how Nova is and the Dragon Fist. Now, Omega Shenron as the sixth and last point. Instead of just getting a power boost, Omega Shenron gets all of the other dragons' elemental powers and that is why he is so powerful, the versatility he possesses. The ending plays the same from that. I like to see people's thoughts on this, and what changes they want.
A mere 10 seconds before Scott said they were gonna watch SDB Heroes, Lani asked "is there anything worse than this for Dragon Ball outside Evolution?" And I said "Heroes" I AM A MASTER OF PATTERN RECOGNITION (btw go watch Totally Not Mark's stuff too)
I just realized something about GTs structure: in OG dragonball and Z we kind of move like this -> goke tries to find the wishgrating dragon shenron, he then has beef with the red ribbon army (which would later result in someone making multiple murder robots to kill him), we then find outhe's an alien and learn about the sayans and their violent nature and then we go to goku exploring the universe (there's a bunch of stuff after that but nothing reallys changes the formula) GT is kind of a complete inverse of the whole thing -> we start with goku exploring the universe, then we moth into baby who is a tuffle robot mutant which only exists because of the sayans' violent past, then someone makes a murder robot to kill goku, and we end on a quest to reclaim the dragonballs from evil shenrons who exist because of all the wishes the heroes made
On the note of "how strong is Goku supposed to be as a kid", I always thought the implication was Goku didn't get any weaker as Pilaf merely wished that he became a kid, not that he became as weak as one. But his child body is not able to use his full power in the same way his adult body could because of incompatability. I mean the GT trailer for Sparking Zero has Kid Goku straight up say "I'm as strong as I ever was"
I feel it still reads like Goku is not as strong as a child because he isn't an adult anymore. If his child body limited his capabilities such as using instant transmission and sustaining Super Sayian 3, then it means he was powered down.
A better Black star arc to me was the pre namak filler where you had goten krillin and bulma going on adventures. You had the strong, inexperienced, and naive gohan, the experienced but weaker krillin and the pilot and brains bulma.
Yes, I did skip close to the end to see if there is another review series is incoming. But did not expect THAT in the slightest... Especially after binging TNM's videos not that long ago regarding it, sooo... LET'S DO THIS!
To me, the significance of the wishes is that Neuva Shenron was born out of King Piccolo's selfish wish, where as the other dragons were born out of reletively well meaning wishes. Because of this contrast, he's the only one of the dragons who seems to have a proper sense of honor
It's a shame that Pan or Bulla weren't given the Super Saiyan transformation. They both are the first Female Saiyans in the canonical manga. And GT was their golden opportunity.
Bulla is literally half Saiyan and she doesn’t fly, fight, throw a ki blast or do anything at all besides shop and get creeped on by PDFs. The princess of Saiyans deserves better

Yeah, and I’m surprised they never interacted at all. I imagine they’d get along pretty well along with Maron and Uub. I know Maron can’t fight, but that would’ve been a good opportunity to reveal 18 and Krillin trained her.
Holy crap you just made me realize something. Lani and Kaiser said we have to accept beings stronger than Buu in order for new stories to be told. But no. GT was the perfect opportunity to reset the powerscale. Just say that the black star balls can't be collected in time by a single team. In other words, Goku and Vegeta would have to go off in one direction to hunt balls, and a team of weaker characters could go off in a different direction.
Not that I would ever doubt the wisdom of Vegeta the underwear model, but if you use the designs on your boxers as a conversation starter, preeeeeeetty sure you end up on multiple lists.
it can't be overstated how much i hope that bit with super dragon ball heroes wasn't a joke, i need the reactions to the insanity of that show in my life
Here's my thing with nitpicking as a thing people do when pointing out flaws...how much is too many? The Cell Saga can be nitpicked enough to point flaws with the narative's existing (Why didn't Goku communicate in Other World? Or use his 24 hour trip? How did Trunks and Gohan survived as long as they did? Etc.), but not enough to kill the story that Toriyama wanted to tell. Here...there's just so many choices, both in retrospect and within individual episodes, that simply start asking, not to suspend disbelief, but to just turn off your brain and consume.
i love how every arc is kinda a love story to both og and Z First arc: searching for the dragon balls like OG Baby arc: enemy of the sayan that wants to eliminate all of them, wants to governate the planet and is defeated by spirit bomb + sayan transformation Super 17: more of the android saga, can't find resemplance to cell apart from androids "merging/fusing" together Dragons: Super genkidama to defeat and basically pure evil enemy that beats everyone left alive without effort but is powerless against a fusion There are a lot of things i'd change too ofc (like the nova shenron sphere, instead of saying he could survive, just bluff and say you prefer to die with him than to let him hurt them again, like a change of heart thanks to being inside goku)
Turns out all along, GT's odd colors were due to film damage, as fans have fixed it as of late, restoring how things were ment to look, and everything ends up alot more vibrant.
Some of score of GT was cool and creepy and iconic. Mostly because they used them A LOT during GT, which is how they became iconic within GT. It has its distinct GT feel to it.

I remember hearing a theory that the reason 4 Star was not as evil as the others is because his wish was arguably the most evil wish made on the Dragonballs since it help empower and evil person. So the theory was that the most evil the wish is the less evil the Shadow Dragon would be and the more good the wish was the more evil the Shadow Dragon would be.
My problem with Baby, is that there’s no culture, no identity with him, he’s a Tuffle… BUT WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Give me more of who the tuffles are. If you’re going to have a villain like Baby, give me a reason that the Last of their Kind trope becomes a villain GIVE ME BABY(“EVIL”) GOKU with Super Saiyan 4 Vegeta, Screaming at Baby; your mistaken baby, for you see YOU FACE AN EARTHLING WITH A SAYIANS PRIDE!!! THAT WOULD BE FUKIN DOPE AS FUCK. Dragon ball GT is one of those things where you say. GT WOULD BE GOOD IF IT WAS GOOD.
about the thing with buu, the only reason they decided to erase everybodys memories of buu was so fat buu could be on earth without causing panic but baby was dead so it wasnt necessary
I wish GT was better than it actually turned out to be. I bet if they were given some time to cook rather than having the first episode come out one week after the end of Z, the show would be better. In fact, I feel like Daima is going to be what GT wanted to be. I hope to see Toriyama's final work be as spectacular as he would've wanted it to be. Rest easy, you legend. Rest easy.
Even though the pacing was not perfect, the Baby Saga is still my Favorite and Baby one of my Top 5 Dragonball villians. And the Shadow Dragons as a concept is just the best.
I have to wonder if GT might have turned out better if they had leaned into Dragon Ball's fantasy roots rather than trying to go even harder into the scifi direction Dragon Ball Z established. I can imagine a series that mirrored the original Dragon Ball series where Pan, filling to role Goku filled during the original series, teamed up with maybe Uub and Picolo to hunt the Black Star Dragon Balls through other dimensions, like Heaven, Hell, and the Demon realm. Granted, you might not have been able to have Baby that way, or at least might have needed him to work differently, but I feel like it would have been a better direction overall.
If Nova & Eis are Twin Brother's wouldn't it make more sense that he was born from the Wish to revive all of The Piccolo Family's Victims since the Wishes happened within days of each other?

Post Battle of Gods, the red hair on SSJ4 Gogeta makes it feel like they've powered up so much they're on the verge of becoming super saiyan god, though in context it doesn't make much sense beyond "rule of cool." But it does look pretty great.
On the one hand: The him tanking the final blasts thing is a very cool concept that makes a lot of sense when you see the ending. Except: Vegeta was told that dying while dead would mean you no longer exist. He put his existence on the line while dead in the fight with Buu. Goku took battle damage while dead in the Buu saga. He clearly didn't die while dead and not exist, but this builds more on the Cell and Frieza in GT fight that ignored this pre-established rule, and so I'm not really a huge fan cause it's another example of GT ignoring the established material for reasons that could have been overcome with the Four Star protecting him from those blasts things you mentioned already.
OK, I’m not necessarily disagreeing with Kaiser’s point, but “I want to watch the actual show and not an adaptation” is pretty hilarious coming from the guys who made dragon Ball Z ABRIDGED 😅
to be fair kaiser said multiple times "you watched only abdridged, not Z, and think this is Z in short? WATCH THE REAL Z". abridged is funny, and fine to rewatch if you already know Z, but very low parodies are better than original content, they need to be inspired by the original story and "fix" the plotholes with jokes (sao abridged tho... that is just so good)
Blackstar dragonball arc.... Should have seen Uub be the one to find the black star dragonballs. Have it as Goku sending him on his own adventure as part of his training, Pan stows away and unceremoniously becomes something of a padawan to Uub. Her reckless behavior being a foil to his straight forward "gotta get the job done before the earth blows up" personality. Both could have really grown as characters in that arc and each episode could feature a character cameo communicating from the ships computer to offer life advice and such.
Plus, we don't know Uub's strength even to this day, so him being beaten by ill-defined weaker opponents is easier to buy because even he doesn't know how powerful he can be.
Honestly, if GT actually ran with the concept of every fighter getting to face their own dragon, Vegeta fighting Naturon Shenron would’ve been very poetic since that dragon is tied to the victims of Majin Vegeta.
Super 17 didn't even make the list of DBcember villains, but if they were to go back, I think they'd put Super 17 arc in their top DB arcs over Zamasu arc, and that's really funny to me.

Thinking about what you guys said about the super 17 arc: They remembered all those old villains but apparently forgot about their original context, which would otherwise have made it very obvious who needed to fight who for some sweet payback. I guess those member berries weren't quite ripe yet.
The Gt special was great to me. Goku Jr. Like they said he is a cowards but once his grandma got sick he want to help her, but also show her that he can be brave. But he doesn't become immediately become brave. It shows he isnt prepared or ready for this type of adventure but tries to power through it. When he acts like a cowards again at the bridge there are consequences unlike in school. Puck had to help him only to get himself in dangerand fall off. Afterwords while he still afraid he doesnt try to avoid damger and tries to fight the villains. As for pan and puck still being okay might not sit well given Goku jr wanted to wish on the dragon ball. The ending of Gt was that the dragon ball cant be end all solution for our heroes. That they need to trust in themselve to accomplish there goals and hope they can solve themselves. With Goku jr being more to prove himselve he cant be coward, and while he still believe to be one he is changing. He showed moments of bravery and he was able to fight of his villain with powers he will master one day. He might know it but the audience know he has potential like his ancestors and when a true threat might show up the earth will have a protecter. Even if he doesnt know it, the viewers know he will take up the mantle his family been doing for generations.
After watching this series it has come to my conclusion that the only reason why I actually like GT is because of Super Saiyan 4, Mecha Rildo and the Evil Dragons
As a Star Wars fan, I know better than most that you can't boil a story down to simply "good or "bad." I do not like GT, but I can see the moments of brilliance. I can see where this story has value and why it has its fans. Despite not liking it, I am glad it exists, because those few good moments do add value to Dragon Ball as a whole. Meanwhile the bad moments are not enough to ruin Dragon Ball as a whole, so in the end it's a net positive.
I've always said, Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta and the ending of GT justifies the existence of GT. Even if every episode was a 1 out of 10, it would be worth slogging through for THAT ending
GT is one of the most interesting parts of Dragon Ball's legacy. It didn't go off of any manga material and it was trying to capture the essence of early Dragon Ball. The tone shift is a form a contention within the community because there are those who stand by it and there are those who wanted more fighting. GT tried to do both but it came at the cost of the writing team's original story.
So... are you gonna review other Dragon Ball fanfiction next? We all agree that DBZA is a form of fanfic, so it'd be great to see your commentary on other people's work, and bring attention to it. And admittedly, I'm saying it because I read a really good one where Yamcha defeats (a weakened) Cell. 👉👈 It was on Ao3, and Gohan's Kamehameha doesn't quite finish off Cell, so it falls to the injured Vegeta, Tien and Yamcha to win, while Krillin tries to get Gohan healed. It's really desperate, and the payoff is phenomenal. And I'd like more people to see it.
