My livestream was taken down earlier because I showed the entire trailer and Toei weren't happy. Understandable! Sorry if you missed it, but thanks for showing up. It's also the reason this is entire screenshots, but I hope you enjoy it regardless! Thanks for all the support. We hit 40K subs!
I think it’s funny, a lot of people hate yamamuro, but absolutely love takahashi’s work. With I’d say a lot, not even knowing that takahashi based his designs from yamamuros old art himself. He did use buu saga toriyama art too, but I here people all the time say screw yamamuro, but you yourself says he’s fare from a bad artist, you just don’t enjoy his newer work, but you have the utmost respect for him.
I'm so appreciating how much freedom they're allowing the artists/animators. They aren't attempting to correct each piece to be uniform. Every individual's style is allowed to be seen in full. For example, we see both Shintani's modern on-model, soft, minimalistic style as well as Takahashi's gorgeous classic (though now technically "off-model") super detailed and sharp style. This movie's lack of corrections invites and allows us to see and appreciate such contrasts and differences in style, and all the styles look GREAT! I was so skeptical after hearing it was BROLY again, felt better after hearing it was a complete reinvention and reboot of the character and his story, and now after this trailer feel nothing but positivity and confidence! I am EXCITED!
I dont really like that, because now the scenes don't look uniform with the intended artstyle. Corrections should be minimal but the character models shouldnt all look so radically different per frame.
A few months ago I made a comment in this channel saying how I couldn't decide if I preferred Takahashi's old, super-classic and detailrd DBZ look or Shintani's flexible almost TRIGGER-esque style of animation. I never in my wildest dreams expected a hybrid of both, let alone one that works THIS well. I am so goddamn happy this movie exists.
4 that's because of how simple and minimalistic everything is, but yeah I get where you're coming from. But honestly, for the fluidity and elasticity it gives to the animation, it ain't the worst trade off.
4 well, you've never seen how superior Mr Fantastic anime fights are, then. Watch any Yutaka Nakamura fight (One Punch Man, Kekkai Sensen, Mob Psycho, My Hero Academia etc) and you will see what I'm talking about. What I've always lived about DBZ fights are their sense of impact, weight, scale and raw power, and that could greatly benefit from the dynamic and elastic approach of a great animator like Nakamura. Just imagine a Super Saiyan fight by him makes me drool.
no he won't i'm fairly certain the lava scenes are in the arctic area. the geography of the two areas seems very similar and bulma is wearing her arctic gear. either it's the same area or they go there after Broly fights vegeta and goku
Yuya takahashi is jesus for DB fans but I am excited for my man Shida's 1 or 2 minutes of pure unadulterated badass animation which transcend 130's Goku vs Jiren #hypeisreal
Kevin Walker They created a whole fucking theory on this movie and then they took it as facts like morons. It's literally all our fault. We should have just waited instead of filling our heads with bullshit fanfic-tier ideas and then act like we are so fucking disappointed. Toriyama explained why they chose Broly. And honestly he needed a remake. So let's deal with it and shut the fuck up about it.
Praise be to the animation gods! Takahashi was a legend the minute the Trunks special "Named Arc recap" aired. I'm so fucking grateful TOEI brought him on board for this, and in such a big way. The shot of Vegeta blocking Broly's punch and then smiling actually gave me chills.
Why are people complaining about the different art styles? I welcome the different art styles, it really intrigued me how much I saw of it on Super. It really open my eyes to animation and the art that follows it, have yet to learn enough, but it's mesmerizing. I'm looking forward to this movie, the animation will be incredible.
Ramo yes. It was a fairly new tweet, but he made it sound like his scene will be longer than his longest one in Super. That’s a rough translation though since the wording was weird.
A.J. Abdullah Just pointing out the style definitely has more of a resemblance to Z than it does to Super. They are definitely going for a more old school vibe.
I was used to the Super anime design and I drew it for a while but after seeing the designs and model sheets for the new movie I have to drew draw my characters into this style. thank you, Ajay, for unloading this video im so interesting in animation and your videos is striving me to animate even more!
I enjoyed your trailer breakdown, its so insightful and educational. I like how you give credit to the Animators and production staff because most of the time they aren't really discussed in other fandoms. I first discovered your channel through one of Geekdom's videos. Keep up the excellent work. :D
Considering Takahashi took a lot of cues from Shida on movie 8, he must've had a field day with animating on this, and his style helps with the visuals amazingly.
Love how fluid it looks. How it can go from a soft aproach like when Goku eats, to the intense angles of Takahashi when it gets serious to the shapeshifting of Tate and Onishi when extreme movement takes over. All being different, it looks put together in a fascinating way. Gorgeous.
Badass Goku it really sucks, but I’m sure there’s more than enough talent on board to pick up the slack. Also that’s not to say he won’t appear on the new series (whenever that is)! We’ll just have to wait and see!
This reminded me of the good ol' days. Really miss the old school animation style these days. This trailer really made me feel good. Looking forward to the movie.
Ajay, you're the best man! God I was awaiting your video after seeing a good bit of the live stream and I get it before going to bed! I had a similar reaction to you to this trailer, I couldn't shut up lol. After seeing Takahashi I couldn't stop screaming, his artwork and animation are absolutely perfect! It's so good, and without the dark shading of the ToP, his artwork looks even cleaner! The ice scene with Vegeta and the close ups kill me. This movie is 90% positives and I'm so excited to say that DB is finally heading in a positive direction with new media. Like you briefly said in your stream, movies work so well since they can encourage original stories like this that can easily form new concepts and expand on them without taking 100 episodes. I'm so in love with the direction of this movie already. It feels so much more Z with the character acting (especially Vegeta's grin)! In terms of downsides, I wasn't much of a fan of the CG but again it was much better than RoF, but for it having to be there, it's fine. Just seeing the gap between Goku's eyes was a bit jarring. And near the end the compositing was alright, I'll agree it looks better, I was just turned off by the shading on the hair. Maybe it was the weird Yamamuro-esc character art there. Again, thanks for the quick as hell upload! Super hyped for this movie! Also, every video you make I keep thinking how much I'd love to talk to you about this stuff, so I realized you had a Discord and am gonna pop on check it out!
my expectations were just blown out of the water. I mean... new dbs movie. After Super was honestly still quite a letdown for me (I mean, the animation didnt really pick up until halfway through the zamasu arc, the story had a LOT of weird parts, and Goku just gary Stu'd his way through the final tournament multiple times. Super ended on a high note, but it never felt like it had any sort of tension). And then it's announced that BROLY, one of the most universally loved AND hated characters of the franchise, plays a part in it? A canon one (presumably)? I mean, come on. Thats just setting a train off the rails after dousing it in gasoline and setting it on fire. But no. The artwork, the animations... good. god. Its amazing. If this movie manages to actually keep this artwork (and not just use it for the trailer, as some videogame devs often do), dragonball might soon usher in a new golden age, where effort is put into it, and its not just a cheap cashgrab. Also, the character designs themselves look so good. Broly, Paragus (assuming they kept his name), vegeta SSJG (FINALLY!), amazing. The only design I didnt like in the trailer was Freeza. The stills you used kinda show him slightly deformed in some areas, but I'm hoping thats just a minor bit in the movie. All in all... I actually got hyped now.
Michel van der Linden Well do not fear for these are the actual visuals. Unlike games with CG models, there's really no point in doing hand drawn animation in this style and then throwing it out. Also if you look at the character design sheets, the visuals are pretty close, so even if there are some corrections it won't look too different.
THIS MOVIE WILL BE UNBELIEVABLE, I literally screamed when I saw these new era of layouts/design sheets and the consequences of these really particular and modern designs ( the f*cking beautiful animation) "I´m fired up". Ajay thank you for the excellent work as always, great video and really hyped breakdown.
The Animation and the design is perfect. The trailer is magnificent. I just hope the rest of the movie will be as awesome as everything that they presented. SO EXCITED!
First!!!! Ajay, time for some boruto animation breakdown as well. You'll need more animation breakdowns for your channel's growth. I WANT THIS CHANNEL TO GROW to a million subscribers
Aryaan Parwez As much as that would be cool the comment section would become cancer with Boruto>>>DBS or DBS>>>>Boruto. That shit get's old and I would hate for AnimeAjay's comment section to be full of that crap.
The designs have had me hype since the beginning... But after seeing Takahashi making his return in a BIG way.. I must say I'm tasked with picking my jaw up off the floor as well after this one. Purely amazing, stunning trailer. Have huge expectations for this film now and I think they'll blow them away! Thanks for your take on everything I always enjoy your animation breakdowns!
I think the best thing you can say about the colours and composite is that EVEN the scene that’s sticks to Yanamuros sheets still looks pretty damn good. It elevates everything and I think is the main reason why the takahashi scenes don’t look jarring or inconsistent when compared to someone like Onoshis. Whoever is responsible for the composite should be super fucking proud of themselves and shintanis choice of colours and line art style.. just glorious.
I love the trailer it's amazing, im also really happy that im able to tell when my favorite animator appears so easily now and it's thanks to ajay. When it came down to the scene with goku and vegeta wearing the jackets and the shiny look in their eye and the darker shading facial features WERE JUST SCREAMING YUYA TAKAHASHI The King Of Dragon Ball Has Returned. That man deserves to be head supervisor at this point, He's the reason i even know about animeajay youtube channel. He truly draws Dragon Ball At it's best and i wish he would be on the show more.
I had been tuned into the livestream for maybe 20 minutes when the trailer finally played, and I was just silent after the trailer. And then I burst out into laughter when the first thing you said after the trailer was "Holy fuck!" Top notch reaction, Ajay :D
I adore the Mob Psycho comparison, that show shows how perfectly you can execute different styles in an entertaining, compelling, and amusing way and I would love for Dragonball to become this property where talented animators can flex their muscle and style without having to worry about strict adherence to a set stylesheet. I think the fandom is becoming more open minded to the idea as time goes on.
Great breakdown as usual Ajay, loved your reaction haha. Fingers crossed the film is a huge success and we get a new season of Super using this new style.
I was waiting for this. It was great to witness your live reactions during the stream last night, but I also appreciate hearing your thoughts in a more detailed manner with these breakdowns and as usual, you delivered. I thought the trailer was stellar, it was everything I had wanted and then some. I just love the fluidity and elasticity of the character movement, it looks delicious. Oh and I'm totally with you on that Vegeta grin, such a badass and classic thing for him to do.
I'm mixed. I definitely feel that the trailer was better than I had expected and the effects work is great. However, there are still some very oddly drawn parts that aren't consistent and have facial traits that I did not enjoy at all. The CG part also looks pretty bad. I love Tate's fluid movement but personally despise his art style so I wasn't fond of Freeza looking like derp mcgerp in that one scene. However, I think everyone can agree that having Takahashi on this makes it 100x better. I'm really glad he is on this (and all over this trailer) because his art always makes people squeal with excitement. Overall, I definitely thought the trailer was great. As mentioned, some of the designs I'm still not fond of but I still think the final product is going to look beautiful.
I'm so happy!!!!!!!! I just can't believe this is where Dragon Ball is headed. So happy. BTW, I think I'm going to start being a bit annoying but I REALLY want to make noise for you to cover Boruto's 65. I know you've been asked this a million times but, this one time, I really want to see this vid from you xD
In what aspect? I'm pretty sure backstory wise canon broly would be better . Although Non canon Broly was much bigger and menacing with a better color palette. In the end they're not too different in what they do.
This trailer absolutely blew me away. I wasn’t expecting a video from you about it so soon either so that’s another plus. Everything looks amazing beyond words. Here’s some of my long-winded thoughts about it: - I wasn’t digging how dark Vegeta’s armor and the colour of the super saiyan hair on the design sheet but they look fantastic here in conjunction with eachother. The colour palette in general is just a huge improvement over super in my opinion. - I’ve complained about this heaps in the past but apart from the occasional good shot I’ve always hated how super saiyan blue looked most of the time in super. There’s been a few instances where I think it looks great such as in ep56 of super, but whenever there was no aura it looked horrible. That greenish cyan look mixed with super’s colour palette and Yamamuro’s modern designs looked awful and made it look so underwhelming. I’m not a big fan of the colour of the aura that we see in this but everything else about it looks almost perfect. And there’s no highlights! - I’m still a bit sceptical on the story front but if they can make it entertaining enough then I’ll be more forgiving. I’d like to see stronger writing in dragon ball to elevate it to great tier. One issue that I think has plagued Dragon ball for a while is that because it’s lost its sense of scale a bit so it’s hard to create dramatic tension. Jiren was a bit too ridiculous for me to take him all that seriously, but the beginning of the Goku black arc was pretty strong. If we got more stuff like that it’d be great, because if this new aesthetic (fingers crossed) is here to stay in other dragon ball material then the writing is one of the only issues I have with the franchise anymore. I’m not sure how this aspect of dragon production is run but I’d love to see other writers have a shot at making something dragon ball related and I think it could turn out great. - To contradict what I just said about scale Broly looks absolutely menacing towards the end there, everything about him rising up from that crater looks and feels so huge which I’ve hardly seen in dragon ball compared to a lot of other anime that I’ve seen. - Finally I left a comment the other day on another of your videos saying that I wasn’t sure if I prefer Takahashi’s approach to the designs or Shintani’s and this trailer made it clear that Yuya Takahashi does my favorite dragon ball art period. Shintani’s designs look great at the beginning but I think that the intense shading and old school approach that he takes really helps to convey the intensity of what’s happening and the shift to more serious scenes. As another commenter mentioned I wasn't expecting all of these different animators styles to work together so well. It also helps that I’ve been watching the trailer raw without subs so there’s no subtitles distracting me from the gorgeous animation. Like I said I was blown away by this trailer, everything about it worked so well and it’s always fun to hear you gush about animation. Also congrats on 40k subs!
I'm actually a bit relieved that Yuya is completely ignoring Shintani's separated crazy eyes and high noses! Too bad the others not so much. Freeza looks weird and some characters look too young
I always try to give Naoki Tate another chance again and again, but whenever I see his work, it doesn't feel like Dragon Ball. His bit in the trailer is the only part I did not like in this superb trailer. Takahashi was GOAT as always, can't wait to see Shida's work.
Yeah, and I am not an annoying hater. I am calling it like I see it. His work in this trailer looks out of place with everything else. It is what it is.
Ayush Mishra Not really, Tate's scene looks pretty in line with Shintani's designs and the rest of the scenes in the trailer, except Takahashi's, which carry the same approach he was using in Super.
