Some of the box sets you can find in stores and others you'll have to search for online! Like and subscribe for more! Audio: Dragon Ball Z - Cha-La Head-Cha-La (Instrumental) Dragon Ball Z - Goku Super Saiyan 3 Theme
Still holding out for my perfect release of Z. I want 4:3, film grain, Bruce faulconer tracks, and the original Toonami openings/ending themes. Feels like every release of Z I have to sacrifice something. The closest are the 3 episode singles but collecting them isn’t practical
If you want that buy the original funimation sets from the ginyu saga to kid buu saga either on Vhs or DVD box sets that came out from 1999 to 2003. Then get dragon box for the sayian and namek sagas.
I was with you until you said the butchered music tracks. I'm tired of nostalgia tards still wanting butchered releases. Give me completely untouched dragon ball with the original music and openings. Only alteration that's acceptable is dub options.
Gameplayer 119 I have a few of the VHS sets I went to a thrift store as a kid an they had them there every once I a while. Never a complete set tho. I have the end of the cell games and the start of the buu saga. It's pretty good quality to be honest.
@AE Pulsar Yeah, it's 100% authentic plus it includes the Japanese version for these Japanese fans out there wanting to watch JP DBZ in 4:3 subbed with the Kikuchi score of course. Though the Eng Dub doesn't include a JP option, so Faulconer only! There are 87 volumes of them. Quite a lot, seeing as it only has 3 or 4 episodes per volume. Dragon Ball and GT got a more convinient release, in that GT had the same 3 or 4 episodes per release, but only had 20 volumes because it was short and Dragon Ball got 2 discs per volume, with 6, 7 or even 8 episodes per disc, though the first 13 episodes have the Harmony Gold Dub (Plus Movie 1 in the first volume as a bonus!) and the Funimation Tournament Saga is expensive, 50 to 100 bucks! Though all that can be fixed by buying Season 1 of the Blue Bricks and then the rest the OG release, which has both the first 13 episode Funimation Dubbed and the entirety of the Tournament Saga too. (Still recommend you buy the OG release due to it not being Remastered, so no SFX are removed and the footage isn't slightly zoomed in, which it is with the Blue Bricks, so you miss all the sides a little bit, though hardly noticeable unlike the Orange Bricks and Blu-Rays cropping.) And the first 17 volumes were the first 53 episodes of the Ocean Dub, edited and everything. So no blood and signs of death. So basically the exact same as it aired it's rerun on Syndication. And the Singles even has the OG Funi Dub, exactly how it aired on Toonami, unlike other releases that are "remastered" or in other words butchered. The OG had SFX, no Digital Noise Removal, is in 4:3, etc.
Yeah, I wish there were re-releases of the original Ocean/Funimation dubs that were originally shown on Toonami in the late 90s/early 2000s. Honestly, those dubs of DBZ to me feel like the definitive way to watch the anime, but those single releases of those dubs are really rare to come by, so not everyone can in on it. Recently I just completed collecting all the singles, either on VHS or DVD, I've also got the Rock the Dragon set. I just don't have much care for the dubs explained in the vid.
Savage_Bolt in the UK, i had (after researching) Oceana initially going by the intro and intro songs, which ones i remember and which i didn't. Got the blu ray and was severely confused because the intro visual and song was entirely different but that's just how it was in the US i guess? Which means for us UK Cartoon Network'ers/Toonami guys, nostalgia is pretty much dead for us. Theres a Rock the Dragon set which only covers the first 2 series as far as i know. A lot to research in one day lol.
Thanks to DVD Netflix, while not the best method, I was about to experience how the Single DVDs are. It was amazing being able to hear Rock the Dragon as that isn't the opening used in later releases. Such a shame there isn't really a convenient definitive way to experience this show legitimately. Seems like the best option is a combination of the Level Set Blu-rays with the Dragon Boxes. Too bad both are expensive...
For anyone that watched DBZ in the mid 90s / early 2000s, the Pioneer release is almost always the definitive collection. Actually, I came across someone selling a box of 60 of them for only $60 on OfferUp. I drove down there asap to get 'em. Then I got the last remaining ones by winning some e-bay auctions - which were much more expensive. I think I ended up spending close to $300 to complete the set. But in my opinion, this was well worth it considering that the other mediocre releases are close to the same price. The Pioneer release has so much more charm. It's in the correct aspect ratio, it has the original voices, Shuki Levy's music, I love that you can see the film texture as opposed to the super smooth digitally remastered texture (or lack thereof), and lastly I love having the commercials for the old DBZ movie releases. Watching those before the show starts makes me feel like I traveled back in time to my childhood.
Kai was completed I believe about a year after this video came up, though I'm sure mostly everyone knows that by now. Thought it was worth mentioning in case newcomers were accidentally misled.
Kai’s dub is garbage and I wouldn’t bother with it. I really couldn’t care less how accurate it is to the manga. The voices are terrible and the music is nowhere near as good
@lucas96180 Kazenshuu has an edit of the entire Kai series with the Faulconer music, its just you have to edit the audio onto the video so you'd have to get that onto your computer somehow. I have it and it's honestly great.
Man dbz is so much like star wars. Both are like the biggest franchise... Trying to get a hold of the original cut (dragon box/ original trilogy) is rare. So many updated versions in HD and not as good... New films/tv show but isn't as good as the originals. Lmao
Marky pop actually the blu rays are better then the dragon box and I’ll tell you why. The color grading is horribly off for the dragon box and they cut out 40% of the image. If you look at the blu rays the images are less cut out and all the color and picture saturation is spot on.
It should also be mentioned that if you watch DBZ on the Orange Bricks with the English voices Japanese music option, all vocal themes withe the exception of the credits will be absent.
I still can't believe that in the 33 Years That this series has existed. We still don't Have a definitive version of this show. Dragon ball Z is literally the only Show i know of where the biggest challenge is actually Figuring out the best way to watch it. Every time they Re release the Show we have to Trade One problem for another. Like come on Funimation is it really THAT hard to give us the Show as it was originally Inteded to be watched but In higher quality and with Both Scores.
I just recently started collecting the blu ray sets and love them. Funny I don’t see or remember what exactly it looked like on tv 20 years ago thankfully, otherwise the cropping would bother but it doesn’t:) I really like these, they’re awesome, the picture is incredible and I love the falconer score, it plays up the drama in the show much better than the original music, but having the original is a nice touch. Thanks for the video!
I just recently bought the first three seasons on Bluray and have been loving it so far. I'll happily take a little cropping for the superior image, Bruce Falconer sound track and all the filler (which is actually pretty good in DBZ) I also love the box art on the blurays.
Only thing good about the blu rays is the audio, besides that it's just the orange bricks but in blu ray form. The blu ray sets are the exact same masters as the orange bricks.
@@jakighcolburnchannel3584 end of the day though it's still cropped. We have nothing available that was released in 4:3 the dragon boxes, and level sets are no more.
Firebreather719 at this point the blu rays are basically the best option if you don’t want to see the destroyed footage, pay a hefty premium for the dragon boxes, don’t want to watch DBZ Kai if you like filler, and if you want to have the faulconer soundtrack without seeing said destroyed footage Usually, I like old stuff being stretched to 16:9 (specifically retro video games) but seeing the footage cropped like that is not that good
So frustrating. I feel like I'll never get to own and watch DBZ again because I know the remastering and cropping will bother me, and I don't have a million dollars to try to hunt down the boxes. But your video was very helpful, thanks.
just ordered my first of the 7 dragon boxes can't wait till it comes in as Ive been wanting to re-watch DBZ for a while now, gonna slowly but surely get all 7
No, at least get the season sets, those orange bricks are fucking terrible, the season sets were cropped to all hell but they're better than those bricks.
I do want to get the Dragon Ball Z Blu ray sets, don't worry the cropping doesn't bother me because it has the pan and scan feature, and the grain removal on the Blu ray doesn't bother me at all, I think the picture quality looks nice and sharp on the Blu ray sets in my opinion.
I'm so mad coz I bought kai years before they release the blu ray sets and they stopped after cell sagas.. So when the blu ray sets came out I bought coz I wanted the full series with filler and the Bruce falconer music... But I still can't find the last season( well I finally did last week BUT no slip cover!!) Im a completist so I have to have that dam slip cover! But now after 2 years, they finally release the buy saga on kai and now should I buy it? To complete my kai collection?
I just found out about the Dragon Ball Z: Rock the Dragon Edition a hour ago. Is there any DVD or Blu-ray with the ocean dub? Just the original 53 episodes.
Just ordered the orange boxes because i wanted the original 96-03 quality for OG purposes. You cant hardly even notice the crop anyways unless you look for it. Faulconer music on repeat 😎
I think I'll keep the orange boxes it be to much to change it to the bluray ones. I did once buy one of the dbz kai ones but found out they didn't have any filler episodes so I got rid of it.
I wish the DBZ Blu-Rays had the original aspect ratio, because that would be the preferred way to watch the Japanese dub at a reasonable price. Sucks that it’s so hard to find the perfect set, as Kai contains the only listenable English dub and keeps it 4:3, but obviously isn’t true to the original Japanese broadcast content wise (admittedly to the show’s benefit at times). I guess my take is this: if you don’t care about watching in Japanese and/or don’t want a cropped image, Kai is your only option. If you want to exclusively watch the Japanese dub and don’t want to track down the Dragon boxes, go with the DBZ Blu-Ray.
The 2014 Blu-rays Seasons had a lot going for them, such as the cover art, slipcovers, fitting menu music, original Funimation voices and Bruce Faulconer's incredible score from the US broadcast. On the downside, they weren't rescans which lead to blurrier than desired lines similar other releases and the colours are blown out entirely so characters are ghost white. Admittedly at the time of release, the 16:9 'full screen' crop was appealing because younger me wanted to fill my TV screen fully, but I've come to really want the original 4:3 ratio to see the animations, framing and art direction as the artists intended. Hopefully they release a Blu-ray version with completely rescanned images in the 4:3 ratio with the option for Faulconer and OG dub.
Abdi Perez bro you messed up.. there’s a better set of DBZ dvds with Faulconer score that he didn’t cover in this video.. they’re sometimes called “individual” boxes because each box only has one disc in it. It has the original aspect ratio without the cropping that Orange Bricks and Blurays have. And the original dub that was played on Toonami
Just to clear things up for me. Whitch version has the Bruce falcouner music and voice acting of Sean Schemel, Chris sabbat etc? That would propably be my perfect version.
The Ultimate Uncut Special Edition singles 1-9, Dragon Box 1 and 2, then the remaining DVD singles from the Captain Ginyu Saga up to the Kid Buu Saga from the late 90's - early 2000's. The only thing you lose out on is the Nathan Johnson score for the later Saiyan and Namek sagas, but Nathan's score wasn't great in my opinion, so it's an acceptable sacrifice to get all of DBZ in full 4:3. If you don't care about the Nathan Johnson score at all then you can skip the Ultimate Uncut stuff since Dragon Box 1 which you need for episodes 28-42 has 1-27 anyway.
Well technically yes... if you think the Single DVD is high res. 4:3 and 480p. Here's a sample: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YGvbbgKTEAY.html
Technically the 30th Anniversary Blu-rays are not 16:9 cropped. Ignoring the first 67 episodes which were fully redubbed with a different score, all the other episodes use that Faulconer score.
There is the new Dragon Ball Z 30th Anniversary set, and I believe there are the old VHS sets that contain Bruce's soundtrack. I don't think the VHS set is actually complete though.
@@EchoAxios The VHS is complete. Also there are the original Single DVDs, which look like this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SDMAbRmp-34.html
yea true. although bruce isn't like super special or anything, he's way better than the lackluster music they had in the japanese one lmaoo i mean seriously wtf how can they let that pass for a dbz score
Yeah the orange bricks are the worst choice, the blu rays still have some cropping but it is not as bad as the dvds. Dragon Boxes are usually considered the best but the blu-rays are the best way to go since they're affordable. I'd get the blu-rays AND DBZ kai.
I’ve seen dbz beginning to end 4 times and I can tell that once you have memorized the complete series dbz kai is the best way to rewatch it I’d recommend buying the Blu-rays first then maybe in the future getting kai
Its actually a tough decision cause you are sacrificing something no matter what one you get. I'll probably go with the blu rays cause it still has brucd faulconer which is the most important part to me, dragon box is ridiculously priced, and the erased lines are gonna drive me nuts on the orange bricks. And then on the blu ray your still getting the cropped image and it has (to me personally) the least appealing design for the box and DVD covers, which of course isn't a huge deal but honestly 90% of the time your probably just gonna be looking at it on a shelf andI think orange bricks win that one. No matter what you do you are gonna be missing out on something and it's so ridiculous that we don't have one definitive set that makes everything else obsolete. It shouldn't be this complicated to just get some damn dragon ball in your life.
gotta hate how impossible it is to go preseve the dragon boxset now that people exspect you to pay 200 dollars or 3000 for the complete set if i found out i had it i would do a dvd rip to preserve it
The rock the dragon set [ocean dub] is probably my prize possession, That's how i watched Dragon Ball Z growing up. I also have the ultimate uncut set and level 1.2 box blu ray set. Yes i have the orange brick set too mainly for a complete Vegeta/Saiyan Saga. Also some old VHS recordings of ocean dub shown on Toonami back in the day. The dragon set is too rare and very expensive. By the way i thought the Dragon set has only Japanese audio with English subs and no English dub, am i right in thinking that?
Quick guide: if you want sub or dub with the original score, just get the drsgon boxes unless you can't afford them, there is literally no downside besides the colors, which is only fixed on the level sets, which didn't make it past the saiyan saga. If you want the dub with the Bruce falcouner score, the blu ray's are fine although worse in some cases than the orange bricks. Basically a pick your poison. A quick side note: DO NOT GET THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY SET, THEY ARE TERRIBLE
Because they didn’t release the entire series they stopped after the Namek saga because Funimation took over the series starting with the Frieza Saga onward and besides ocean dub cuts out a lot of stuff and we only got the first 67 episodes cut down to 53 episodes
I think the orange bricks have the best dub vocals tho I think. I hate the way Vegeta sounds on the dragon box that's the ocean dub his voice is too high.
it's easy just to to Nyaa and type dragon box. you are welcome, now you have it. (not the best of the best btw, the best is a french version but it's incomplete)
So the perfect way for me is the rock the dragon edition box set which comes with the original 4:3 toonami release with rock the dragon intro then i got the DVD singles of the original uncut versions of the rest of dbz with the Faulconer opening and soundtrack and the movies all with original aspect ratio and voice acting no redubs same applies with GT i highly recommend this if you can find it they are extremely rare the only one that was expensive to track down was rock the dragon edition but worth it
None of the above. Just found a 4:3 version that includes previews of next episodes dubbed and excellent quality. Downloading it atm. It’s LATAM best dub
I have a good question, if FUNimation released the Dragon Box (Z) sets for the customers, then why in the world it cost way too much? $200.00, $400.00, or $500.00, I think FUNimation made a big mistake with the prices that are given. The set does look absolutely fantastic and awesome, and the intro, outro, next preview episodes, and animation look crispy and golden. But the down side, it doesn't have the FUNimation score (Nathan Johnson music score and Bruce Falconer music score), it has the Japanese music score; which it is awesome and amazing with each episode that contained with it.
