love it and the comedy you put into these :D haha this was solid and i subbed for this video thanks for the entertainment :D also makes me wonder going to look see if you ever covered beast wars on n64 or anything haha not a traditional fighter but one more or less :D
I’ll give some credit to the writers of the arcade mode Raditz story was hilarious. It a dream about him becoming the strongest fighter and it’s revealed he was knocked unconscious by Nappa for two hours.
@@4dhumaninstrumentality789 That was absolutely the reference lol. You can't convince me someone didn't play MK3 real quick and was like, "I finally figured out Vegeta's super, guys!"
Man I feel bad for Webfoot. The fact they had so many finished renders for a DBZ Power Stone game goes to show how much they took the Dragon Ball IP to heart.
it was for me until I heard "get out of my FUCKING timeline", that shit sent me over the edge was absolutely not expecting TFS in this video, should have with how ingrained they are in the DBZ fandom now
I am glad that Matt seems to be mixing it up every weekend by having Wha Happun one week, Worst Fighting Game the other, or something else sometimes to give the Wha Happun extra time to cook and simmer. “Hope that means DOA6 is still a candidate for Wha Happun”
@@brotbrotsen1100 DOA6 had a good foundation for the actual game, it's a solid fighting game and everything. But yes, the monetization of the game made it DOA. When you have a day 1 season pass that costs more than the actual game itself (and it only lasted for a few months before the next season pass came out, for the same high price). And even if people wanted to buy individual costumes on the PC version they weren't able to, that was only available for the PS4 version of the game. PC players could only get outfits by buying the season passes. (They did end up changing that way later, but the game was already dead at that point.) Not to mention that a bunch of reviews negatively focused on the games character designs and completely ignoring the actual gameplay (which is par for the course in gaming journalism I guess).
Gonna be thinking about "get out of my FUCKING timeline!!!" for a long time. And of course, gremlin Vegeta. I think I played this on an emulator at a friend's house in the late 2000s and was sure it was a fan game since it was so awful and lifeless. Forbidden memory unlocked.
I'll never forget that this game gave us 18 firing missiles and Raditz spin dashing like he's Sonic for super moves. Also I'd only replay this game again if there was a voice mod featuring Team Four Star.
I specifically remember going back to Bulma's cute mom to get the 99 Chocolate Chip cookies from her. They always helped in a pinch. I love that Buu's Fury gave actual healing items to carry though.
@@spiralgodking9877 fun fact: when you go to get the senzu beans for videl during the tournament portion of the game (which is fairly early) and then eat all the senzu beans that yajirobe gives you (so you have 0 when you return to Gohan) then it will still let you progress through the game and your inventory will have 255 senzu beans in it afterwards. Basically 255 is the item limit, and since the game only checks to see if you've talked to yajirobe, not whether or not you have a bean, it just deducts a senzu bean from your inventory whether you have one or not. Since you have 0, it rolls you back over to having a full stack 🤣
Hearing about the strict development times on top of them having multiple teams with heavily imbalanced levels of experience who were all working on different projects simultaneously certainly explains why this team developed knock-out titles like Legacy of Goku 2 and Buu's Fury, yet also delivered complete duds like the first Legacy of Goku, Taiketsu and GT Transformation.
I remember having fun with Supersonic Warriors and that was on the same system. Definitely better sprite work and it had the characters fly. Though I kept using Frieza and he’s kinda nuts in the game. His super is the planet killing attack he does in the show and while it’s super easy to dodge (as it just goes straight down), it makes a 45 second clock where you win once it times out. The only way to prevent the clock is to take the hit, which takes out half of max lol. So I would just charge it up, hurl it and then just dodge for 45 seconds. Why yes, I am a degenerate
@@bearerofbadnews1375 I am yes, though a few tracks in the first game were good but for 2 and BF, man, the music was spot on, and his work on the GT Transformation game..good times, those soundtracks give me the big nostalgia. 😂
Considering how many terrible DBZ fighting games exist (another shout-out to Final Bout, by the way), being the worst reviewed of all time is an achievement of sorts.
Somehow Final Bout reached legendary status when I was a child and everyone I knew that was into DBZ was trying their hardest to find a chipped PS1 that could play burned copies of Final Bout. One of my friends finally got a hold of one and that PS1 was passed around to multiple people just so we could play Final Bout lol
@@Ascendedninja6 GT Final Bout was localized to the US just before DBZ exploded in popularity stateside and long before GT itself was localized, so it was highly sought after for a period of time. It even got a reprint in 2004 (well into the PS2's lifespan) to meet the demand.
@@kiwamicorps I was going by what the video mentioned but looking at Metacritic, Evolution and Ultimate Battle 22 have indeed worse scores, with Ultimate Battle 22 having the absolute worst. But those two also have less reviews than Taiketsu. Eh... Let's just say these three are an achievement in infamy and move on. =P
Argh, I remember playing this game as a kid and thinking how ugly the characters looked and how stiff the characters controlled compared to other fighting games. Thankfully SuperSonic Warriors came out a year later and that was a way, way better DBZ Fighting game compared to this mess.
I laughed so hard at Vegeta's walking animation. 🤣 So, wow! That's how things would've been had Bulma pushed him to walk the red carpet with her. Also, I feel like Krillin has the best-looking character select portrait as well as being the only non-ugly one out of all of them. I mean, Buu tried. But the rest look like bad picture shots during a year book photo shoot.
oh god, as if digitized games couldn’t get worse… a anime digitized fighting game on a portable with 4 buttons, considered the worst dbz game… my condolences matt ☠️
This was one of those "bad but you still do your best to figure it out and enjoy it" games for me, so I can't help feeling a certain sense of nostalgia witnessing its incredible jank once again.
I always felt bad for this game cause I liked it despite (and maybe because of) how bad it was. Hearing the situation the devs were in and how they really wanted to make something good but were forced to release this, made me feel worse for it.
Out of everything in this video that's meant to give me nostalgic vibes, it's hearing Takahata and Kaiser that really do it for me the most! Man, I miss their Abridged series'....
Omg this game was responsible for some of my earliest gaming memories. You always put so much love and effort into your vids but this one really struck a chord with me. Absolutely God Tier.
DBZ fighting games were actually published in Europe way before 2003... the show had been huge in France since the early 90s. I remember playing on SNES some ports for Europe in 1994.
@@jeremyabbott4537 The reason Nintendo likes referencing Urban Champion is that it's a reference to their pre-video game days, as Urban Champion is based on a Game and Watch boxing game. It's nice for the older members of staff.
Maaaaan, Bid for Power takes me way back. Like you that's the only reason I bought Quake III. Cool fact, I actually went to grade/middle school with the skin artist. Lost contact with him over the years but dude was always wicked talented as an artist even as a little kid so it was cool to see him get on a project that got some actual notoriety. I'll have to see if I still have the BfP disc he gave me buried in a disc case somewhere.
Am i the only one who kinda forgot about this game, like i know about it's existence and how fucked it is but my brain shoved it somewhere deep in there but not deep enought to completly forget
I actually owned it and I forgot all about it and I'm that guy who likes GT Final Bout (I was a kid and it was my first and only DB game for a long time so that is pure nostalgia goggles as it is a shit game.)
I love Webfoot, Legacy of Goku trilogy and GT Transformation were legendary and unforgettable, but they absolutely botched this. Also: God, do I wish I knew what soundfont they used for their soundtracks. It's so mystical sounding.
Well, that explains What Happened nicely. Taiketsu was one of the worst games I played on the GBA back in the day and now I know why. And of course it boiled down to Atari wanting to push more units, trying to stave off oblivion as long as possible. At least Legacy of Goku 2 and Buu's Fury were damn fine games!
If I can give Taiketsu some credit, the soundtrack was by the same people behind Buu’s Fury so, despite how limited it is, the music’s pretty damn cool
I still remember playing this game back on my GBA in High school, me and my friends wondered what kind of drugs were the creators on when they created this.
Eyyyy Gerry, damn friendy fellow. Neat that you were able to get him for the vid too. And those were a cool selection of extra gameplay settings stuff. Intigued by this Dragon Ball Z Powerstone-like game that was spoken of in the video too, oooer. Hell yeah Legacy of Goku series haha, find those games hella inspirational with my own game dev stuff. Those extra settings were a cool touch too, noice.
Battle Beast for PCs would make for an interesting pick for this series, I feel. Visually it's honestly really damn good, and it got decent reviews at the time, but trying to play it today shows how rough of a fighting game it truly was, and I think the positive reviews at the time were mainly a mix of the excellent presentation & the generally dire options PC gamers had when it came to fighting games (at least ones that weren't ports of arcade or console games). For every One Must Fall, there were tons of terrible PC fighters.
funny enough first dragon ball game I ever owned I remember spending months figuring out the codes to do sky battles and ultimates and still got my ass whooped 😂
Here's a dumb odd question: Would you ever try to host a fighting game tournament where each round is a different one of the games, with the championship being the worst one?
Wow Matt! That was a blast from the past. Can't believe you found all that old video. Whole thing made me cringe a lot. It's hard to see something you worked on get torn a new asshole, even though it really deserves it. I wish you got to talk about the fire, but I know this isn't a "Wha Happun." (During the development of this game our office had a fire, and burned down. It was pretty nuts.) - Gerry
I remember reading a review of this game on a Finnish gaming magazine Pelit back in 2004, where they gave it only 30 out of 100. As positives things they listed chocolate, black sausage and lemon juice, all completly unrelated to the game. And the cons were simply everything about the game.
I played this back in the day, and I think it's the most disappointed I had been with a licensed game at the time. I remember some people defending it with "Well, it's on the GBA, so what did you expect?", to which my go-to response was always, "Yeah, you know what else is on the GBA? Super Street Fighter II Turbo Revival." Granted, I know now that every game dev story is different and porting a classic game is different from making a new one from scratch, but that really doesn't make the game any better.
The "you can't criticize a game from [year] or on [system]" crowd can always be counted on to ignore how [year] or [system] had infinitely better stuff than what you're critizicing.
Man, I didn't have a decent internet connection during the GBA era. I remember seeing this game in-store and thinking it looked absolutely amazing going by the box when I was younger and asking my mother for it for my birthday. By some twist of fate she accidentally got me the Buu's Fury/GT Transformation Double Pack. I wasn't disappointed as I was a huge DBZ fan anyway and holy hell, I am I glad she made that mistake looking at the game now.
That is wild given we also had GT on the PSX as well. Though the main issue with that game was if you wanted to win every fight, all you had to do was be the fastest button presser since you’d win every power struggle you could put your opponent in. But this seems to have all around control and feel issues prior to some unbalanced game mechanic.
I'm looking forward to the day when you inevitably talk about more of the many attempts to dethrone Mortal Kombat in the gore department. Lord knows there were a _truckload_ of them.
OH GOD! This game is fucking miserable! I picked this up because I was obsessed with DBZ games and FUCK! At least you can see all the content in 15 mins. Goddamn, thankfully Super Sonic Warriors came out later to be a great gba dbz fighter.
1:33 YOOOOOO BID FOR POWER WAS MY JAM, I remember getting Bid For Power on a CD somewhere with my friend when we were like 6 years old, and years later I wanted to replay it, but I couldn't find it anywhere which sucked
Lol that dig at jump force. Nice job matt. Honestly I don’t know what’s worse. A game that’s on the GBA. The GBA had a lot of games that looked really bad on it. So taiketsu is a little excused but not really. But jumpforce has no excuse. It’s style choice was made by design not by limitation. It’s honestly insulting that jumpforce is on the same console that has fighterZ and FF7R. I despise the look of jumpforce. Playdough character models. Never again!
I got this game for Christmas as a kid, and I played it a lot... I beat the hell out of it with all the characters. It really sucked, but I was a Dragon Ball fan, and was really hungry for any content. Supersonic Warriors is an infinitely better game and nailed the feel of being a Z fighter
When I was younger I was so excited for this because my cousin had the first Budokai game on PS2. I Loved Budokai and I thought it was the best thing ever. Since I had a game cube I couldn't get the game (It was before the port) So I begged my dad to buy me Taiketsu. Once I got it, I was super disappointed. I would have been happy if they had transformations. They couldn't even give us that. I played the game once or twice and basically spent a lot of my time looking at the box. It was a cool box.
You really should try out "Battle Blaze" on SNES. I just accidentally found this "game" and I have a feeling it could be one of the worst fighting games...Scratch that... Games overall I have ever seen.
13:05 gave me flashbacks to 2006-2010 when you couldn't find a Linkin Park or Disturbed song on RU-vid that wasn't in a random compilation of clips from DBZ 😂
Ah TAIKETSU, also known as "Sky Battles Make Mince Meat Out Of The Difficulty" the videogame. The second I discovered down down up up up would consistently guarantee Sky Battles, it TORE the game apart. Thank goodness the Faulconer-inspired charm persisted in the soundtrack, because to this day it is the one thing I will defend in this game. Super Sonic Warriors this is not, even though you can see glimpses of a great idea compromised by circumstance, so a fair verdict all things considered.
I had this game when I was in middle school. I let a friend borrow it and he ended up stealing it from me. I think I ultimately ended up the winner in that scenario.
I remember having this game as a kid and I was so enamored by just how bad it was lmao, and dead set on figuring out how to do kamehamehas purely out of spite. Ngl though the Orange City theme from this game slaps.
Wow, I'm not even sure which character is done worst by the art style. Vegeta looks like a muppet. Krillin looks like a bobblehead. Buu looks like his face was drawn on with a sharpie. Eightteen doesn't even look -human- -android- cyborg.
@@That_Lady_Charlie yeah pretty and I wanted to know why this was made and how it pissed off many animal crossing fans not being a main line animal crossing game for the Wii U.
I strongly appreciated you having someone from the team of Webfoot like Gerry Swanson basically go into detail about what was happening with the making of Taiketsu. I never once thought that they had an arena fighting game planned at the time, but couldn't get to it due to time constraints and trying their hardest to make Taiketsu what it was meant to be rather than what we got. It definitely makes me appreciate Legacy of Goku 2 a thousand times more given the context of what goes on in developing the game. Judging by the video covering the making of The Legacy of Goku 2, those people genuinely cared about making the sequel one to remember. The looks, the gameplay, the mechanics, and most of all, the music in the game is simply amazing. Dragon Ball eventually did get plenty of arena fighters though, with some being good like the Raging Blast series and some being pretty bad as time goes on, like Ultimate Tenkaichi and the Xenoverse series.
