im going w/ ff1. it's longer, there's more to do and the party setup is still a cool meta. dq3 is definitely better than ff1 but that's to be expected.
Dragon Quest for the simplicity and monster designs, but god damn that game is absolutely ruthless. I'd rage quit it so much earlier if not for the emulator savestates
The original Final Fantasy. It was my first and I love it and the accessibility of it. The different combination of classes and Party's you can make is almost unlimited.
Final Fantasy certainly has more to it's first game than Dragon Quest does, but Dragon Quest established a lot of how the gameplay for video game RPGs would work.
Well that’s a very unfair comparison, considering final fantasy 1 came out a few weeks before dragon quest 3. So really we should be comparing final fantasy 1 to dragon quest 3, and dragon quest 3 wipes the floor with ff 1. Putting that aside, I’m memory eof a final fantasy fan
This was a fun video. I can’t speak on Dragon Quest/Warrior though because i still haven’t played it. I’ve been wanting to play it really bad and with Akira Toriyama’s passing, I feel I HAVE to play it now. But anyway, good video. Looking forward to the next one 🤘🏼
Its probably a good thing you're using the modern ports, cuz if you were comparing the original NES versions, it would be ridiculously one sided do to how horribly broken and glitch-riden FF1 was. That being said, while I do legitimately enjoy the pixel remasters, I still prefer the Dragon Quest series at the end of the day.
Good call. The DQ remasters on the Switch look godawful. The music sounds incredible and Toriyama-sensei's monster designs really shine in their non-pixelated form, but the bad mid-2000s RPG Maker lookin' mismatched sprite/tile resolutions... It's like having sandpaper dragged across my eyeballs the whole time I'm trying to play. 🙅♂
Personally, I have way more interested with Dragon Quest than I do with Final Fantasy. Namely because of the simple, yet engaging & charming story, characters & exploring worlds and the gameplay still keeping as formulaic as possible, but it also being more balanced with strategies & other challenge.
Yeah that’s pretty much what I love about the Dragon Quest series too. All the different stories you experience in each game, with great characters, and they really do a good job of making the exploration fun and meaningful
Between Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy i have to pick Final Fantasy because you had more party members while Dragon Quest had only 1 member for the whole game. Which was not bad since even the enemies came alone in Dragon Quest, but Final Fantasy did atleast gave you more enemies to face
This is gonna be a banger of a series and can't wait for the rest of them. Also in my opinion anyway, When you get to them it would kinda make more sense to compare DQ10 with FF11 instead of FF10 because both are MMO's but hey that's just my opinion. Anyway awesome video.
DQ1 had MP. FF1 had magic charges. FF1's remakes replaced the charges with MP. FF1 copied DQ1. I think it's fair to say DQ1 is better. Also, Dragon Quest just tries to be a fun RPG. While Final Fantasy always forces you into some dumb gimmick or minigame every other battle. No, I don't wanna play Blitzball or do some Cloister of Trials, I wanna go fight the boss already. Dragon Quest uses a formula that works, Final Fantasy keeps experimenting instead of sticking to what works. Dragon Quest protagonists don't talk, AS AN RPG PROTAG SHOULDNT. Final Fantasy protags never shut up, and you can't even pick their names anymore. Dragon Quest innovated an entire genre, Final Fantasy just followed in those footsteps.
@@OmegaChase1002 Thankfully the Pixel Remaster of FF1 still uses magic charges. I honestly prefer that style for spells because then you can feel free to spam your weaker spells throughout the dungeon and still have full use of your more powerful spells for the bosses.
@@dukey03 the MP system was just better, i'd rather play the PSP version if im playing FF1. also didnt they delist a buncha previous versions of games when pixel remaster came out?
Good concept for a video series, I look forward to more. I would like to point out though that the comment about FF 1 being the only FF game with spell slots is incorrect, while FF 2 moved to the mp system that would later become standard, FF 3 uses levelled spell slots just like FF 1, small point, but I thought I'd mention it. I'm currently making my way through the final fantasy games in order for the first time, I'm up to 5 and so far I've been having a blast.
Glad you enjoyed it! Ooo thanks for the heads up! FF2 and 3 are the only ones I’ve never finished, so it makes sense that I had no Idea they brought it back for FF3 haha
I'm definitely in the Final Fantasy realm, mostly because they aren't afraid to change up the formula. Dragon Quest is pretty much the exact same gameplay each time, which definitely has it's benefits. However, I have both enjoyed and not enjoyed the different ways FF has adjusted their games as they continue.
You've inspired me to start the DQ series. Had 11 for a while but never played it and after watching this I've bought DQ1 and am loving it!!! Discovered you via The Gaming Effect, so glad you and Soldier do a pod together.
Oh man this warms my heart so much! I'm glad I was able to be your gateway to the series! Thanks for checking out the video as well as our podcast! My buddy Mike aka DGonline and I also do a podcast on my channel here called Relaxed Retro Talk if you're looking for some more podcast action!
@@dukey03 one step ahead of ya, my man. Started listening to relaxed retro talk a few days ago 👌🏻 so if you see the figures for each episode creeping up by one then you know it's me haha
4:12-4:16 Barney purple dinosaur transformation 😂 Am glad dq+ is better than the switch version, with an accessible easy mode to be nearly on par with ff pixel remasters (fan game dq+ and ff renaissance fun ideas). 6:11 good idea using that non white mage party in pixel remaster. Normally red mage fails with black mage tying up resources (and fighter is even more), and no means to heal a monk when owned by low magic resistance. 7:15 boss fights are generally disappointing like ff2 lol grind like hell or tear through like paper. Glad ff2 lets you attack with a double shield (less damage but helps ultima that ignores magic resistance while buffed by weapon/magic levels) unlike previous entries, though they patched out dual wield killing 2 enemies. 14:44 dungeons & dragons blueprint for classes too lol, and then star wars between ff6 and fft obi wan orlandeau hoodie with jedi err holy sword plus others.
Yeah I’ve been playing FF2 in preparation for the sequel to this video and I’ve found either I 1 hit kill everything and can’t take damage; or I get 1 hit killed and can’t deal any damage. There is no between! 🤣
@@dukey03 lol yep, just glad poison works better as the old version was 4 damage on ultima weapon, which I needed to cheese with ancient sword to do real damage with curse (its damage sucks but hitting automagically cripples an enemy) as I kept the blood sword. At least minwu's ultima is based on spirit though soul of rebirth party of the afterlife is taken out of PR. Arcane labyrinth was too redundant for me to do more than once, and forbids saving. Toggling off random encounters helped a ton for those trap doors. I do got a poison vid where the boss heals with drain and then dies of greater poison damage lol ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tTQ6p2Lv7WI.html
For me, it's Final Fantasy 1. Better enemies, better story and MUCH better music to say the least. To me a better comparison would be DQ1 and Mystic Quest.
