In the canon show, he literally stares at his own reflex in water right after he trasnforms, and it's then that he realizes he's now a super sayan. Not to mention like others said that freezers tells him his hair and eyes changed, and that his hairs literally fly in his own face while flying and fighting.

Just a fun fact for whoever doesn’t know, Son Wukong is the monkey king from Journey to the West that dragon ball takes heavy influences from in the first sagas (Pilaf saga). And Son Goku is based on him.

Also Sun Wukong is literally known as/pronounced "Son Goku" in japanese, so that joke was most likely meant to be a play on words considering that fact. The Power Pole and Flying Nimbus kid Goku uses are based off of the Ruyi Jingu Bang and cloud-stepping shoes respectively.

3:11 He’s bringing up how it took his best friend dying for him to reach a powerful form, and even after flawlessly stopping various sword swings he asks if said friend is okay. Really says that despite death losing all meaning he doesn’t like someone getting hurt someone else to get stronger.

This video in years and years old and I just now realized something, whether the creators of the series meant it or not. In the original Funimation dub, Goku and nail are both voiced by Sean, so Piccolo telling Nail to shut up, and Goku responding seems like a funny little nod to that in my opinion.

So because of this episode I went back to see the original scene where trunks meets goku. And in the original series goku is excited for grape flavored medicine lol. Great easter eggs from tfs
