Dragonbane is the newest edition of the oldest Swedish RPG.
I show off this outstanding boxset, briefly go over the rules, tell you who, I think, would enjoy this, and what other RPG books this would work together with.
Also, if you like to read sci-fi and want to help support my creative work, please have a look at my latest book, Phantom Memories, available on Amazon for Kindle and print on demand.

Personally, Dragonbane is the new TTRPG on the block and it is going to be taking a lot of peoples hearts. I ran 10 sessions of Dragonbane at GenCon just this past week and people couldn't get enough. We even had a demo table setup for 1-hour games and people were lining up out the door to play it.

The fact that they do not become superheroes is perfect for me! I heard a podcast playthrough of Riddermount and I loved the old school feel so I had to pre order. 😊

It absolutely is a rules-light game. The actual mechanics take up very little space in the rulebook.

Man look at the contents of the box, it clearly was made with a humongous amount of love! I like collecting RPG related stuff, even if I’m not playing the game (not because I don’t want to have to clarify) this for sure seems to be worth grabbing!

Been thinking of using Dragonbane for Symbaroum, rather than Symbaroum's own ruleset. Just need to covnert some of the spells and a corruption system. Been loving dragonbane so far.

The ferocity mechanic is great for increasing the action economy of single monster encounters, like boss fights. Definitely stealing that.

A solid overview. I backed the kickstarter and received the game about a month ago. Like everything from Free League, it’s a beautiful game. I’ve only had a chance to casually look through it. But I’m looking forward to getting it to the table soon.

Great video.... thank you! I'm really loving this system as we're just starting to play it in full after a couple example combat tests! 🤓👍

When it kickstarted I rather foolishly thought it was a 5e clone, and therefore of zero worth/interest to me. I've since learned it's a Runequest clone, so it belatedly went straight to the top of the list!

I order this one directly from the publisher in Sweden, so impressed I was in the quality of the boxed set. Not that exciting to learn, except that I live in Australia. Ah well, I’m used to such long distance dealings when it comes to gaming.

How does Dragonbane compare against Forbidden Lands in your opinion?
@Sebbaasdungeon
@Sebbaasdungeon 7 месяцев назад
The Dragonbane rules are more classic. Magic in Dragonbane is more reliable, the fumble table more forgiving, as is the recovery of the Willpower points you need to cast them. The mechanics of Forbidden Lands are more modern and intertwine more elegantly. But there are certain rules that I don't like. Dragonbane feels more solid and more play tested overall. Apart from the dice rolling mechanics, the games are similar, and you can take elements you like from each game and adapt it for the other. The GM tools from Forbidden Lands are excellent, for example, and will work great with Dragonbane.

That was Interesting, really liked to hear you talking about the game. The game basically sounds like a stripped down version of the Expert Drakar och Demoner from mid 80's mixed with the 1991 version of Drakar and Demoner, with a few modern things and changes to make it more in line with modern games. The old games included healers but well it took an hour of sleep to restore a will point and a week to heal a hp also. You also had one parry and one attack in each round. ( Depending on which versions ) Half orc and half elves races have been excluded and the game seems censored for a modern audience. That is some of the largest differences except for the newer rules like pushed rolls. Anyways most of the changes seem fun and it's likely a great first game for kids and adults that just want something quick and easy, I cannot imagine that anyone wants to learn thousands of pages of conflicting rules these days like I did back in the days anyways...

What bits were censored? I am a degenerate, corrupt human being, so would like to know.
@hnorrstrom

@@perplexedmoth Well, haven't been reading them for long but for being a game for children there would today being some questionable things I guess. Like drugs use like viagra, and of course plenty of alcohol and narcotics. The original rules didn't really have any real nudity in pictures like the Monster books the bestiary books for example with dryads and fairies etc. Showing the melons. There was plenty of cleavage and posing in many books with extra rules and adventures. I mean I didn't mind as a 12 year old boy. Then there were also rules to make a cultist or a slave or a courtesan character. Plenty of racial stuff in the campaign world and man dominated societies, Satanic death cults, and of course brothels in every town described. Something I assume they have totally changed today in today's politically correct society. With that said it wasn't too shock or overexposed like in Kult it was just depictions of a normal society in a fantasy setting sort of...

@@hnorrstrom Thanks. I got Dragonbane last week and started playing it. It feels like the target focus is a bit pre-teens/teens as well as adults. Good to know that the original wasn't just like that. Not sure how Ducks/Mallards ended up in there though (they are one of the reasons I got the game, and it's not too silly). I'm super curious about Kult, especially the original edition, somehow it's hard to come by an original copy (I'm based in Finland at the moment). And I'm generally skeptical of later editions of games.
@hnorrstrom
@hnorrstrom 2 месяца назад
@@perplexedmothThe mallards has been there since the 80's. Can't say I'm a huge fan of them but as long as people play normally they don't have to be silly, Black pirate ducks and Brown merchant where abundant in many adventures back in the days and we didn't see them as silly back then. I generally agree, older versions are usually more interesting. In the case of Kult I really don't like the Divinity lost rules. The old rules are outdated and are quite similar to Dragonbane but the new ones are really confusing. If I was to Game master Kult I would use rules from Things from the Flood most likely. Or even CoC or the original rules before the new ones. If you by any chance know Swedish, or are interested to just look at them I got Pdf versions of a great deal of original Kult books as well as old DoD.

Maybe I have tunnel vision but many of the new TTRPGs that have come out lately (OSR and what not) seem to borrow a lot fron The Dark Eye.
@Sebbaasdungeon
@Sebbaasdungeon 6 месяцев назад
From what I gather, they are actually borrowing from old Runequest. It seems to me that DSA 2e and 3e were almost Runequest clones. Dragonbane for example, was a Runequest derivate, so the new edition is just building on the old.

@@veggo74 The reason it's hard to say is that back in the day, the publisher didn't think in terms of "editions". So there are no official numbers. There's different printings, and in some of them the rules have been more or less tweaked, but how much change is needed to think of something as a new edition? Noone knows.

Got dragonbane for the miniatures, treasure cards, map and inspiration adventures to play with my underage daughters. I'm not going to use those rules. I will house rule the sht out of this and use a simple RPG system to play. I don't know if 50€ was worth it but if I have some good time with my kids I will accept it as a "well spend". Not going to spend so much iany other time though. And not going to buy any supplements for Dragonbane. Prices are too high.
