Excellent video Jason. I am a beginner and I have viewed a lot of videos on paddling technique but this is the first video I have seen that explains the different seats in the boat. Thank you!

Hey, Jason, just want to say thank you for putting up the video. Even though I just discovered your video after it's already been here for so many years. I wish one day you can be my coach.😊

Hey Jason I only attended one glass apparently I am doing everything wrong and I am not being synchronized with the other people on the boat also I don't keep the same speed, I hit the boat and the paddler behind me hits me accidentally, they told me it takes me longer to get it out of the water for the next stroke, is this normal for a beginner?

Great lesson! Could you make a paddle review video? Could you advise me a good web site where buy a paddle that ships all over the world? (i'm from italy)

The rockets are actually the hardest position, where best paddlers should go. Their exit has to be very efficient and their pull should be strong to catch the rip from the front of the boat. Not true that theyre the weakest. Every position of the boat is crucial.

From what I've been reading, it is better to dive your paddle at a 60 degree angle and not 90 like you are. It makes me wonder which is correct.

@jasonhong thank you for your video. I find this tutorial really helpful. I would like to consult you that as a beginner, if there's any way to improve our rotation and technique at normal days. As i have limited chance to do water training.
@jasonator40
@jasonator40 8 лет назад
Hey thanks for the comment. In regards to improving your rotation.. you could always do simulations in front of the mirror and see how you're rotating...you'll see what looks good or even just tape yourself.

@@jasonator40 Hey Jason, I have a question when it comes to exit with a paddle. In practice the other day we practiced the exit similar to what you did when it comes to pulling out your paddle, like unsheathing a sword. My problem is on my left side, I end up taking in more water. My left side is more powerful, but my right is better for technique. When it comes to your left side, is their anything you can suggest to avoid having your paddle bring in water?

Have you considered a longer paddle since making this video? You have about 2 inches at the top of the blade out of the water and there's intensive splash throughout the stroke on the demonstration portion at the end. A fully submerged blade has less resistance travelling through the water, thus makes no splash or water disruptions.
@jasonator40
@jasonator40 9 лет назад
Hey Bert, the boat is docked and stationary. There's no avoiding the white wash even if your paddle is fully submerged given the power I was generating. I could have easily lessen the power to show no white wash. Think about a speed boat propeller. Its full emerged but there's still white wash given the amount of power it generates.
@K2NOPS
@K2NOPS 9 лет назад
Jason Hong if you submerge the blade fully at the catch rather than halfway through the stroke, there would be no distress. I think a motor prop operates in a different manner than a single blade paddle, so the hydro physics involved are a little different.
@jasonator40
@jasonator40 9 лет назад
GoPro Bert hmm I guess we are of a different opinion here. At the catch I believe my blade is fully submerged. Hmm...maybe you can try to paddling in a stationary boat and get back to me Lol. Anyways thank you for your comments. :)

Heard of the "C" frame? If so what are your thoughts on it? I think it encourages a more pronounced twist and engages the upper back and core more
@jasonator40
@jasonator40 9 лет назад
Hey sorry haven't heard of the "C frame" but now I'm really interested haha. Is it just different terminology for rotating & derotating

It might be the Power U... its a D around and maybe even the slice in stroke...its what Bob McNamara coaches..

Hi, jason I'm really interested in dragon boat and i'm planning to join the club in my university. My question is, can dragon boat in the long term change your body shape? since you keep on paddling on one side, let's say right. Could this make your right side of your body somewhat bigger than the left? I just want to know what muscle groups are really being used during dragon boat. Thanks! Btw great tutorial!
@jasonator40
@jasonator40 10 лет назад
Hey Sylvie, I guess to answer your question - I can only speak from personal experience. I'm a right sided paddler and yes my right arm is utilized more and does get bigger than my left. My back stays pretty much the same symmetrically. My right leg is bigger as it is my dominant leg when I push back. My abs are pretty much symmetrical too. After a good race with good technique you should feel like you ran a marathon. Legs should feel like jello. Back muscles should feel sore. Usually both shoulder blades are felt sore. Lactic acid build-up will be felt most predominantly on your bottom arm as well. A lot of teams have their paddlers to switch sides from time to time just to even out as well. Good luck and I hope you join the team! Thanks for the comment!!

In my team, they're always saying that the top hand has to be above the side of the boat at all times, but I prefer to move it inward during the recovery like you do. Do you know if there are any advantages to keeping the paddle upright?
@jasonator40
@jasonator40 9 лет назад
Hey Jaimie. Keeping the paddle upright all the time would just tire you out. However it's done usually only at the start of a race during the "acceleration" phase.
@jasonator40
@jasonator40 9 лет назад
Yeah totally understand where you're coming from. Some teams are just taught a certain way and you are obliged just to conform. I just find some teams are just not up to date in the latest techniques. Good Luck.

hey is it necessary or rather safe for a person who doesn't know how to swim to wear life jacket while trying dragon boating for the very first time ??
@jasonator40
@jasonator40 8 лет назад
Yes. You're right if you feel unsafe always wear a life jacket. I've been in many boats that flipped in races. So stay safe.

It would help if you would also take just as much time and care to demonstrate your stroke from behind - so your words...and the visual... are synced. This will allow us to easily go through the actions without frustration. I liken this to trying to learn to dance when they call out, step forward and to the left...but one partner has to reverse this in his/her mind before attempting to follow the directions. This will not be necessary for some; however, it will help others a great deal.

Hi Jason, nice explantion. Stroke, Engine and Teminator/Rockets.. Are you referring more to the flag catching kind of Dragon Boating? Because the team i am in don't use this terms other than pacer.
@jasonator40

No specific referral. These were there terms I was taught when I first started out back in Toronto in 1994!

What is the best attire when racing?
@jasonator40
@jasonator40 7 лет назад
Oh just tech material, tights. Something when the water hits your clothes it doesn't become an added weight. In regards to foot wear, a pair of sport sandals or water shoes will do the trick.

@jasonator40

Its hard, usually when you see your paddle coming to your mid-thigh that's when you start taking your paddle out.
